Lion's Mane looks weird

Hey,

I've bought a block of Lion's Mane spawn and moved it to my fruiting chamber some weeks ago already. I've been looking on the web what can be wrong but couldn't figure out. They just doesn't look like Lion's Mane mushroom :smile: My setup is a plastic box with moist perlite on the bottom and some holes on the side above the perlite. FAE is provided by a PC fan and humidity is kept at 95% with a cool mist humidifier. There's also a 6500K lamp providing indirect light for them.

They are growing on the top so that they don't get in touch with the perlite. I cut X-shaped holes on the bag.

Can you help me what can be wrong? Is this even Lion's Mane mushroom? :laugh:

Lion's mane needs A LOT of oxygen to develop properly.
That's said, even improperly developed lion's mane dosn't really look like this, this could in fact be another Hericium species, something like Hericium corraloides. But even if it is that, you shoul drill more holes and fan more often for it to develop properly.

Looks weird for sure! here is my blocks, just starting to pin, my first time as well. I have them in a humidity tent with a cool mist and a fan, also another ush on every hour for a few minutes. The tent has one zipper totally unzipped for fae. Before i had the zipper all the way up and the cool mist i had no action for a week, as soon  as i changed those things boom they started to grow that day.

Thank you guys for the feedback! I'm also suspicious that it's a different specie. FAE should be fine. There's a 80.5 CFM fan running for 15 minutes every 45 minutes, ventilating 3 boxes – 33l each. That's 3.5 cubic feet altogether which means that the air in the boxes is changed about 483 times every hour. Even considering some back pressure or uneven distribution of air flow between the boxes it should be fine. I'm not an expert in aerodynamics so obviously my calculation can be totally wrong :laugh: – please correct me in this case.

The funny thing is that the supplier doesn't even have any other mushrooms on their website which resembles this at least a tiny bit. Anyway, I asked them so I'll keep you posted if you are interested :smile: Thank you again!

Well, Hericium coralloides is a closely related species to the lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus). It is still a good edible and probably contains many of the same beneficial properties as lion's mane. Perhaps the seller doesn't even know the difference.

I would agree that it could potentially be H. corallodies, but I don't think you are getting enough FAE still. I've done similar calculations as you did for FAE, coming up with almost the same time period, 15m on 45m off, and my H. erinaceus performed poorly and didn't develop nice tight pom poms like they should. I got much better results when I increased the fan times to once every 10 minutes, but running just long enough to fully exchange the volume of air at least one time or more within the fans on cycle.

Unless I missed something it sounds like you're fruiting a bag of straight spawn and not mixing with any form of substrate? this looks exactly like what grows in my empty lions mane spawn jars when I forget to wash them out

I'd say your problem is a lack of available nutrients due to no substrate. Lions Mane grows well on pasteurized straw if sterilized substrates are out of the question. I'd also look at increasing your fresh air exchanges, as mentioned above they love fresh air

The fan runs 15 minutes on and 30 minutes off – just to be specific. I'll try to increase that, thank you for the hint! Probably I'll decrease the speed of the fan and just run it continuously.

Also thank you, Mangowaffle, that would make a lot of sense! The seller told me that it's ready to fruit but I checked it now and it's actually a colonised sawdust spawn. I'm leaving in a few days for almost a month so I'll probably harvest these weird looking fruits and seal the spawn air tight and store it in a cleaned out fridge. Then next year I'll mix it with some more nutritious substrate. What would you recommend for that? I have a huge pressure cooker so sterilisation is not a problem.

Just buy some spawn, I paid 30 dollars for a bag of shiitake and a bag of Lions mane spawn shipped to my door. Since you have a pc you can make some grain jars and expand the spawn.

I agree it's gotta be the FAE.

If you DIY your grows and materials etc it can be quite a challenge to get very good FAE levels whilst also being able to maintain humidity, especially if you don't have an integrated system like a humidibucket.
I ran into the same sort of issue and other species have indicated as well that I only have moderate FAE with my current setup so need to upgrade.

Multiple air refreshments in an hour can require quite a bit of humidification.

    There's a humidity controller turning on the cool mist below 93% keeping it running until 95. The issue might be that the whole setup is built into a cabinet. There are ventilation holes on the side of the cabinet – like on a monotub – but it might provide less fresh air then needed. It was enough for cubes so far but probably it will need an upgrade for the lion's mane. I guess more FAE and a proper substrate should do the trick.

    I also dropped small parts of the spawn into 3 pressure cooked jars of millet one of which got some weird cobweb like infection, another one was colonising very slow and stalled around 40% and there's one progressing pretty good but today, around 80%, I noticed a small larva in it, something like a moth caterpillar :laugh: I don't know how it got into the pressure cooked jar which was inoculated in a glove box but this project feels like a disaster so far :laugh:
    Next year I want to experiment with agar, anyway, so I'll probably just start everything over from scratch with more FAE and a proper substrate. At least the project keeps me doing stuff which makes it a great hobby :laugh:
