Would it be wise to wait or birth and fruit?
    #25674284 -

PF Tek,  no diversions.  BRF cakes in 1/2 pint jars, plan to fruit to SGFC.  My first jars went extremely slow due to (I think) poor temp mgmt, and leaving tape on the holes inhibiting gas exchange. By the time many of them hit 90% they stalled, and then I started seeing blue stuff inside the jars (I assume Penicillium). The contaminated jars have been removed. The jars would fluctuate between uncomfortably cold to very warm. The survivors have taken over 40 days to completely colonize. I started a second batch 4 weeks after the first, which have come along MUCH faster due to (I think) more consistent temp mgmt, and allowing better gas exchange.

Its getting close to time for birthing and fruiting, but I may need to travel soon.

If I were to have only 17 days between the day CONSOLIDATION is complete, and the day I must travel for a week, would it be wise to fruit the cakes and harvest as much as I can before I leave, or leave them  in the jars and birth them once I get back?  If I left them util I return from travel, that would put the oldest surviving jars at 2.5 months old, and the youngest jars at around 1.5 months old. Is 17 days enough time to complete the fruiting process, or will I be sacrificing my overall yield for convenience?

17 days should be long enough for you to get a flush before you leave. How long will you be gone?

I'll be away for 8 days. I suspect 17 days would be enough to get through one flush, but then what? It seems wasteful to come all this way and toss the cakes when they may still have subsequent flushes left in them.

Would leaving the fully colonized and consolidated cakes in a cool place until I return do any harm?

I'd hate to fruit them when I don't have enough time to get the most out of them. I'd also hate to wait too long to fruit them and somehow get nothing.

You can store them in the fridge after full colonization until you're ready to use them

put them in the fridge if you want and birth them when you get back. Or you can just birth them before you leave, get a flush or two and then start taking care of them when you get back. I have left cakes for a week and came back to mushrooms ready to be picked (granted there were pins formed when i left). If you pick a flush right before you leave i doubt they will grow much of anything before you get back if you time it right.
