when to birth?

1/2 pint PF substrate jar about 23 days after inoculation. The primordia have appeared and it is now time to birth the cake. Wait until you see this, and the fruiting will be maximized. -PF Tek
Quote:
Within 5-10 days (with certain mushroom strains it can however take up to 30 days) pinhead-size accumulations of mycelium should form. These so called pins represent the beginning of mushroom growth. In the following days also small mushrooms with brown heads become visible. Now it?s time to birth the cake into the fruiting container where the mushrooms can develop to maturity. -PF Tek for Simple Minds
Quote:
Once a cake is completely covered in white mycelium, wait at least 1-2 more days before taking the cake out of the jar. -Simple Cubensis Grow Tek

Full colonization of a PF jar can take anywhere from 2 to 5 weeks, depending on your own factors. It can vary widely, so don't use these as scripture when evaluating your own setup. A good rule of thumb to determine full colonization is the time it takes for all the sides of the jar to become covered with mycelium, and wait 1 week after the outside is fully colonized. This will allow for the inside (which has less access to CO2release/fresh air) than the outside layer does, and takes longer. -PF Tek FAQ: Incubation through Birthing
so when should the cakes be birthed? 1-2 days after the cake is covered with mycelium? a week after? when primordia or pins appear? what about dunking? what is your birthing tek?

i only ever did cakes once, but to get the ball rolling for ya..... i left them a few days after 100% only. i dunked em in their jars in the fridge overnight, then birthed em. there are many cake experts on this board who will surely come up trumps for you (get magash, scotsman, baraka in here - or try to pm them)

I birthed one of mine 2 days after it was done, and it just developed pins. Not an expert since this is my first time of course.

I wait until my instinct tells me to go. My experience is as follows:
Cakes will often slow to a halt when they have only a small part of substrate to overtake. When I reach this point, I often birth the cakes even if they're not totally colonized. Just make sure to get as much of the substrate off as possible, or you'll waste nutrients with unnecessary mycelial growth, and you'll run a greather risk of contamination.

i dont think thats such a great idea.... birthing without 100% colonization leaves a vector for contamination.... its much better to just wait the extra week and get 100% colonization..... the mycelium needs to have a strong network before it will produce shrooms.... once it totally encases the nutrients, its well protected from contamination.... it takes ALOT to contaminate a cake once its 100% colonized....
anyways... i would wait a few days to a week after 100% colonization.... then dunk the cake in cold water for 12-24 hours... in the fridge... then birth.....

The most important thing in my experience has been making sure the mycelium grows through the middle of the jar before birthing. Otherwise, you drain your water supply as well, and dry your cakes out before you get any fruiting.

different strokes for different folks, if ur gonna dunk u should wait imo atleast 3 days to a week after 100%apparent colonization because water soaking into the uncolonizated mid-portion of a cake could be cause contams, altough a little h202 thrown in the water could solve that, junebug reports having had sucess birthing cakes the next day when not dunking
