Next step after birthing BRF cakes --> shred to bulk shoebox tek
    #27294290 -

Hey friends. I've got a small amount of mycelium more than ready to go (fully colonized, pinning like crazy in a couple jars). Six 1/2 pint jars (had 7 but one was contaminated--just rust from lid but I wasn't sure about it...buried it in the yard). Anyway, gonna do a shoebox tek, shred to bulk, but I'm *wildly* confused by all the info out there, so any help would be great.

Here's where I'm at: Last night I followed a tek for coco coir to get my substrate ready. Basically just poured boiling water over coir + verm, then baked it at 200 degrees in an oven bag for 1.5 hrs. Dunno if that was necessary, but went with the tek.

I've seen somewhere (can't find it now) that you're supposed to mix the spawn with substrate at this point, and put in a black plastic bag for about 10 days for it to colonize before putting in the shoeboxes. Is that right? Can't find any other tek that says so...Does it need any air during that time if so?

Then what? Put in shoeboxes, cover with lids, and just wait to fruit?
Any thoughts on ratio of coir/verm to spawn?

Any other advice?

Total noob, probably overthinking...

Thanks!

No no no...

You are using shoeboxes. 1qt of spawn per shoebox. Ratio of spawn to sub is 1:2. That means 1qt of spawn and 2qts of CV per shoebox.

1 half-pint jar = .25qt
You need 4 half-pints per box and 2qts of CV.

If you baked your CV in the oven AFTER you hydrated it then you probably lost a lot of water. Grab a handful of CV before you mix it with your spawn and squeeze it to make sure you have proper field capacity.

Dump spawn and CV into plastic bag and mix together thoroughly then lay bag inside if shoebox fully open. The bag is acting as a liner. A barrier between the substrate and shoebox walls to prevent side pins. Level the substrate out and put the lid on the box and wait 10-14 days for pins to appear. During this time, DONT TOUCH IT.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I actually still had too much water after baking, so I added some verm to reach field capacity. Hopefully the ratio of coir to verm isn't too off now.

So these shoeboxes allow some fresh air? Doesn't seem like it, looking at them with the lids on...

Also, do I need to do anything differently after the 10-14 days?

Even with the lids latched they will get all the fresh air they need. After the pins start coming in you can flip the lid over to increase the FAE if the pinset is looking pretty dense. But for the most part shoeboxes are set and forget. Check the surface conditions every now and then and mist if it's looking dry

great advice in this thread

i've found my shoeboxes do better the less i open them. if you prepped everything right, you shouldn't need to mist until after the sub is fully colonized. when i was new i would check them constantly & this dried them out faster. you really only need to check once or twice in those first 10 or so days, if that. once fruiting starts & pins start to come in densely i find i need to do a bit more babysitting to maintain surface conditions. all they'll really need is a mist if they are looking dry. your area may be more humid than mine, so you may only have to mist once, or maybe not even at all. i have to mist every few days or so during fruiting in my climate, more as the pins start really using the water in the sub to grow

I'm getting ready for a pf cakes to bulk using shoeboxes, just waiting for everything to get delivered. Your saying 4 cakes for each shoebox for that 1:2 ratio, but is that necessary? The other shoebox writeups I've read used 2-3 cakes per.

It's just that I'm using syringes so I figure 1 syringe would make 9 cakes, but if each shoebox needs 4, I only got 2 shoeboxes :c

you can use less if you want, 3 shoeboxes of .75qt of spawn will still definitely work. most people just do a full quart since we generally work in quarts. you might get slightly better flushes with a full quart but you’ll still get results just with .75

screw it, i just ordered the ingredients for agar. going to do spore syringe to agar then cut each agar into 3s and inoculate oats. the more research you do the deeper into the whole you get :crazy2:
