Can't you just use potato? Ferather had some gelatin based agar might want look it up, short term might work. I remember there being different grades of gelatin , downside was mycelium could break it down over time.

I am for experimenting but don't necessarily see reason to use poo for non-poolovers or e.g. wood for non-woodlovers. For agar a more universal agar consists of carbs to provide energy (macronutrition), preferably of which at least a part consists of simple sugars (carbs range from single sugars to short chains to long chains and others), and enrich with a little bit of micronutrition which would basically be your vitamin pills or veggies in our diet.

So in my opinion if you wanna experiment, try stuff but still stick to the combination of macro and micronutrients in this way and know what contribution you would like a certain ingredient to make - IMO that is better than trying stuff in more random ways or by associations.

For less universal plates: woodlovers are nice on T-gel which i just keep recommending especially for cleaning up contams. Extremely easy to make as well and if you wanna make your agar from recycled stuff: you can use spent black tea as well.

I think potato water but maybe also pasta or rice water could be good sources of recycled macronutrition for agar and they would also contribute some micronutrition depending on the specifics.

Gelatin is a whole other story. IIRC there are possible benefits? But it's kinda weird in that it can be broken down and used as food and I am not sure if you wanna base a medium on that much protein (well hydrolyzed at least). Maybe gelatin could be pretty cool to germinate spores?

Sorry I didn't read the OP too well although I thought I did :z

Even starch I kinda doubt that it would gel unless you put so much potato in that it becomes too much in terms of nutes?

Gelatin yes, but agar can also just be bought from asian shops - it's a dessert
