Could you advise any SANE books about psychedelics?
    #25644689 -

Hey all,

I used to read guys like Leary, McKenna, and Grof, but there is something that upsets me lately. It's when they start speculating about gods, alien mushrooms, extrasensory perception, enlightenment, 12/21/2012 and all that schizoteric stuff. Don't mean to offend anyone (including the above mentioned people which made a great work), but such speculations are bullshit which discredits psychedelics and sows delusions in people's heads.

So.
Is there any sensible scientific or popular literature on tripping seasoned with healthy skepticism? I like how Stephen LaBerge talks about lucid dreaming, have you met anything of the same quality?

Cheers,
kyu.

Sometimes in life things are close to how you want them but not 100%. These books are based on people's personal research and most of the time experiences. That being said there will be things within the literature you may not agree with. Simply read and absorb what you want and disregard what you don't. That is how we live life anyways.

I don't have any suggestions for ya sadly but I felt like responding.

Michael Pollan's book has been getting good reviews. My mom's reading throu. . . rather listening through it. She says there's like 115 chapters.

I think it may be in line with what you're after.

Don't forget that you are meshing spirituality with science while under the influence of these entheogens. There have been many highly scientific minded people that have had very spiritual trips.

If you want to know more about them, go do a 4 or 5 gram mushroom trip. In my experience, these entheogens speak to each and every one of us individually while paradoxically to all of us in certain ways. I don't believe that everything can be solved with scientific hypothesis. It makes life much sweeter IMHO.:mushroom2:

LOL at Leary, Chiao McKenna.

Grof. Grof. Grof.

That whole abstract -> biographic -> perinatal -> ego death -> transpersonal trajectory of his, I naturally went through it in 25 years of tripping. That cartography actually holds true, not just on psychedelics, on dissociatives too.

I'm sure Grof has his off moments but the main vain of what hes saying is true.

McKenna & Leary, nah, Leary was a showman and McKenna too caught up in his ideosynchrasies. Grof has the right idea. His book LSD Psychotherapy tells all you need to know

I for one am pretty scientific minded, skeptical of things, open minded but not too open minded but far from a narrow minded atheist and hardcore mainstream science follower, but i've personally experienced ESP (with and without drugs), precognition to be specific, and it's real, only experienced it twice in my life so far though, but that shit is real, make no mistake, just because science thinks it's pseudoscience or whatever doesn't make it so, seeing the future is real and it happens, idk how or why, and idk how to consistently tap into it (i wish lol), but it's happened and the vision i had on Aya was crystal clear, detailed, to the point, real time emotion, saw my fathers death, 2 weeks later he died. The first vision i ever had in my life was when i was 17 back in 2007 and had a dream that i was in the hospital and it had the same sense of knowing and urgency/warning that the vision on Aya about my dad did, the visions came from the same source, but the dream was foggier/hazier, harder to remember, but sure enough i almost died 2 months later from Salmonella Sepsis, docs didn't expect me to live but i pulled through.

As for enlightenment, personally i've experienced and come to understand enlightenment in my own way with Aya, and that's real too, but it's more of a temporary thing, the real work is in one's day to day, putting the clarity/knowledge/understanding/wisdom/insights/revelations and such into practice in one's daily life. But Aya at least is quite capable of inducing states of enlightenment.

As for the rest of the stuff, eh, not really my concern lol.

I really liked the Psilocybin Solution by Simon G Powell.

There's a little bit of esoteric religiosity but not much and nothing like McKenna.  No hippy shit.

Simon is easy to find and responds to emails too (no I am not Simon)

I agree, i'm one of those who is mainly scientific, but definitely open minded, receptive, discerning, skeptical but open to learning new things. And i for one do think science and spirituality can co-exist and work together, it's pretty obvious to me. And i can say without a doubt i've had truly mystical/spiritual/religious experiences with Aya that religions just simply do not offer, which is why there's so many atheists out there now, religion doesn't give people these personal direct experiences, Entheogens do, now if only the hardcore atheists can let their guard down a little bit long enough to pursue these Entheogens and learn something from them rather than taking them a few times or even 50 to 100 times and thinking they have it all figured out lol, i took Aya daily/near daily for 4 years, and even i've barely scratched the surface of what all this stuff is possible of and all the potential and what there is to learn or remember and know. So it's definitely more like a path, a practice, things unfold as you go along and it can take years of dedicated Entheogenic work/practice to really begin to understand this kinda stuff, ime/imo.

LSD: My Problem Child by Albert Hofmann is a great read with very little metaphysical speculation. It's one of my favorites on the subject.

Also DMT: The Spirit Molecule by Rick Strassman is very good. (I haven't seen the film but I highly doubt it's presented in a similar way.)

I don't care for Aldous Huxley's style of writing but some of his essays may interest you if you haven't read them already.

There are probably some others I'm forgetting, but I'll look back through my library next time I'm at home.

Astral Dynamics is a great book on inducing out of body experiences more or less on command (very heavy on theory), but Robert Bruce tends to shy away from discussion of psychedelics (for whatever reason—reputational?). OBE is a qualitatively real phenomenon, but no one really knows what it is.

Pollan’s book was great.

"DMT: The Spirit Molecule" is a good read.  Several books by John Lilly are worth recommending, "Center of the Cyclone" for one.  The collection by Grinspoon et.al, "Psychedelic Drugs Reconsidered" is classic and well worth reading.

:goodday:

To decompress you can always watch "Altered States". :laugh2:

I enjoyed this but there's some out there metaphysical stuff in it, considering it came out in his pre ketamine days. Does he have a book detailing his ketamine experiences?

The only way to experience any of that is with psychedelics; you can't do it sober. I come from a background in dreaming/lucid dreaming, and they aren't that mysterious now these days, so tripping/DMT can get you a lot further. The only thing that sucks about weed is how it takes away your dreams, so it's only a mild psychedelic and can hamper any dream investigations you might have, so it's best not to smoke it everyday.

I'm not a fan of Michael Pollan much. Fuck him. I read his previous book about veganism and it sucked. He's just a journalist. I already know everything about psychedelics. He just regurgitates it all. You could read every book he read, his job is to write, he doesn't necessarily know anything you can't even if he tripped more recently. I'm not a fan of it, there's no creative synthesis. Read more Stan Grof if anything, and then, integrate.

The Spirit Molecule, Soul of Prophecy, and Singing to the Plants are the standards for what we know about DMT/ayahuasca. Terence McKenna was an acid head, so everything he said about mushrooms and DMT makes more sense when you look at it from that perspective. I could read Pollan's book now or later and won't really miss out on anything special, so don't be scared if you don't read it or get it used; you won't be late on anything besides getting to know him, the author, more personally.

Yeah, IIRC it's "Exploring the Deep Self" or close to that, all about tanks and, uhm, Vitamin K...
