here are some from my library that haven't been mentioned (i think)!

Grinspoon & Bakalar, Psychedelic Drugs Reconsidered. The Lindesmith Centre, 1998.

a reprint of the 1979 edition, covers definition, action and societal/medical consequences of psychedelic drugs. lots of thought provoking discussion on the use and abuse of entheogens and other psycho active substances. all in all a great book and a progressive stance is taken by the authors.

Schultes & Hofmann, Plants of the Gods. The Healing Arts Press, 1992.

a general overview of entheogens and their use in history. nice full colour photos of plants and fungi, and useful chart of enthoegens and their actions on human perception. if this has been already listed, it deserves another mention. very useful for the study of entheogen use.

Heinrich, Clark; Magic Mushrooms in Religion and Alchemy. Park Street Press, 2002.

despite the title this book investigates the theory that the a. muscuria mushroom was the main sacrement of ancient judaeism and early christianity. rather good, but more for those studying religion and bible text than entheogens. shades of The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross by (can't remember). Nice glossy photos and interesting side bars. some fascinating ideas about how christ is actually a metaphor for the fly argaric!

definitely get this book if you can. it is a great overview of entheogen use and history. i checked out the web documentary and it is rather interesting. one of my main areas of study at university was comparative mythology, and since i had a rather cool patron for my MA i was able to study the religious use of psychedelics as a side line. you may want to check out some books on shamanism as well. i can find a list of those that mention the use of psychoactive substances (although this list will contain books with small sections or articles rather than being completely devoted to the subject at hand). also, just found another:

Merkur, Dan. The Mystery of Manna: The Psychedelic Sacrament of the Bible. Park Street Press, 2000.

this investigates the idea that ergot use was prevalent in the formation of the mystery religions of the middle east, in particular judaeism. not a bad book, but somewhat flakey when you push the argument too far. worth the read though.

inner traditions - bear & company (who support healing arts press) have a rather good selection of books on the subject of entheogens. you can write for a catalogue of their books at:

Thanks again. I'm doing philosophy and history at university at the moment and I'm thinking about doing my third year dissertation on psychedelics.

Breaking Open the Head by Daniel Pinchbeck

www.breakingopenthehead.com

I found my copy at a local Barnes and Noble, shouldn't be hard to find at all.

I highly recommend it.

there are a number of books of interest to the psychedelic enthusiast reviewed at places like www.erowid.org & www.lycaeum.org & www.entheogen.com & www.spiritplants.com & www.ayahuasca.com (& many of these websites have nice links, & will also have suggested reading lists etc... also, several of these nice sites also have had book suggestion threads as well, poke around here & there for lotsa good titles...
there have been several pervious threads here at the shroomery, with some excellent suggestions as well...
some websites have full texts available, or excerpts --- places like www.psychedelic-library.org & www.csp.org

~

another really good (essential?) read --->
alan watts _the joyous cosmology_
(the texts is available online at a couple sites, but the book has the amazing b&w photos that just like illuminate the flow of the text, hehheh - i mean some very nice pics, whew)...

anyways, check out other threads here & some of theose other sites, and you will have enough books to fill a library (& empty a pocketbook)

oftentimes, public libraries (& uni libraries) will have some useful books to borrow... please treat borrowed books gently & get them back on time... (cleveland library doesn't have any copies available to loan anymore of dr hoffman's _lsd: my problem child_ (tho' i think they may have his _insight, outlook_ (tr. by j. ott) ...)

Terrence recommended Psychology and Alchemy by Carl Jung to his brother Dennis before he tripped for the first time. Dennis recalled later that he hadn't read it until after a few trips at which point he understood why Terrence had told him to read it.

I haven't yet finished it and it isn't technically about psychedelics but i recommend it as the insight into dreams and symbolism is invaluable to the psychedelic experience.

Otherwise, I'd recommend

The Psychedelic Explorer's Guide: Safe, Therapeutic, and Sacred Journeys
by James Fadiman.

I've got to second the James Fadiman suggestion. Food of the Gods is fundamental as mentioned over and over. Check out "The Rose of Paracelsus: On Secrets and Sacraments".

Old one but Aldous Huxley's Doors of perception. Very good read form a very good author. Also Timothy Leary's psychedelic experience is interesting. Both a little old, but classics in they're own right.
