Re: What Should We Do About Climate Change? [Re: Rahz]
    #25640767 -

I think there's a bit of confusion as we've kind of been conflating these two topics interchangeably. You're correct and that model is correct as far as carbon emmissions are concerned.

I'm in a way trying to remove carbon emmissions from the model by imagining a situation with only reneweables and fussion/fission and in those cases the only by product is heat/energy (so far as global warming is concerned) in so far as I can imagine it would then be the only real driver of global warming.

In other words with fossil fuels green house gasses become the primary driver and CO2 becomes the best indicator to measure their production, whether CO2 is the biggest contributor is irrelevant so long as it has a strong correlation.

Once carbon emmissions are removed though what is the next thing in succession that msy pose a similar problem? Following this thought experiment I'm lead to imagine it would be direct temperature increases itself, or energy production, which if quantifiable could be correlated with atmosoheric moisture. To ask whether the energy production(what produces the heat) or the moisture itself(what traps the heat in the atmosphere) is the cause of the warming then is kind of a non question in the same sense that asking if the person or the spot light is producing the sillohet.

Understood. Whether it would be a good metric I'm not sure but research suggests heat from energy production is about 1% of the modeled effect of human contributed greenhouse gases. There could be various ways of reducing that number if necessary.

Loosely that would allow for around +90 billion humans to at least maintain current projections in current living conditions. Of course one wouldn't want to do that, but it could certainly support larger than current populations up to and during the period of cultural change that results in a reversal of global population numbers. If we can get fusion deployed on a wide scale in the next 50 years, it would only be a generation or two beyond that before the global birth rate dropped below 2, hypothetically speaking.

Ya, I was thinking the same.

The money supply has to constantly expand or debts will no longer be able to be serviced.  It's just math.

Notice that in 1962 debt was just a little more than twice the supply of money. In 2012, it’s almost exactly four times as much

Yes, the money supply will grow forever.  But that won't impact climate change.  I guess the question depends on what was meant by "Capitalism requires infinite growth to function".

They are intertwined though, he is correct. As it is currently practiced the inflationary debt based currency drives a need to expand, so long as money is issued as debt/with interest then we will have to keep working. This is getting a bit off topic, but I would contend that money need not be issued simply tk serve debt in itself though, that's just how our current system operates.

Say you have an economy with 10$ of monetary supply held by one person and another person who has 10$ of debt (presumably to the guy with the 10$ as he's our only other actor in this scenario). The person with the debt grows 10$ worth of apples and sells them to the other guy. Hell, let's make him groe and sell 15$ worth of apples. Now they both have 5$ and no money was created.

The problem arises when the people with the money lend it to "the nation", in other words the populace, with interest. This perpetuates debt and essentially enslaves the people to work for the wealthy throigh no choice of their own. It's the same problem as levying taxes with out representation except debts are being issued eithout reoresentstion; it is slavery of the masses by the wealthy minority and the masses have been tricked by a complex monetary system which they are intentionally not tought about and indoctrinated to believe this is a form of freedom.

Yes, this is a problem in that what this class of people lend is money they don't need right now, money they don't even miss.  In that scenario, the rich sacrifice nothing but they get the fruits of someone else's sacrifice.

At this point, gaslight victims often start saying how the economy wouldn't function without the extension of credit, so the rich are doing us a great service and deserve to be rewarded for their noble idleness.

To whom I say...the public is perfectly capable of issuing it's own credit and does not need a decedent crue of high-rolling freeloaders to do it.

But the problem is even deeper than that.  Most credit that is injected into the economy is from bank loans.  Bank loans are not drawn from pools of saved money, they are literally newly created money.  When you get a loan from the bank, the moment the contract is finalized, the money supply expands by the amount of the loan.

And when you repay the loan, the money supply shrinks by that amount.

But, get this, because of interest, it means that there can never be enough money in existence to repay all loans, and besides, if such a thing were to somehow happen, virtually all the money in existence would disappear.  The banks are literally demanding that more be returned than was created.

Of course that's impossible, and the only way to keep one step ahead of the whole mess going down is to forever keep issuing loans so that the money supply expands and there is enough to pay interest on past loans.  So debt continues to grow, and grow, and grow, and grow, and grow for ever and ever amen.  It must, or the system collapses.  The system is doomed to collapse eventually anyways, because the ratio of debt to money keeps growing.  The amount of existing money compared to debt keeps shrinking and shrinking

At some point, the required interest payments alone will exceed the money supply, and the system will not function any more.

So,  this scenario guarantees we are never going to get to the end of history if that means some peaceful resolution to our struggles.  It places mankind's  march of progress on a hamster wheel that is bound to seize up eventually.

As I demonstrated that is a fallacy thst you need money to repay debt, to repay debt you simply need value. You can work off the debt, or produce a tangible good, and the debt is in effect payed back, actual currency need not be exchanged to do so.

The issue here is eith incurring debt on those who did not agree to take it on, inevitably a certain percentage of those people will resist and, understandablyz refuse to repay it. The lenders will demand it be paid no less so in order to do so we simply levy more debt on the masses to pay off the existing debt (or rather the interest on said debt). The end result is exactly the same as you have outlined of course, though I take minor issue with how you arrived at it.

Have you ever tried to repay a bank loan with something other than money?  How about you tax debts?  Will the government accept your barter for that?

How about pretty much anybody paying for pretty much anything?  Money is all that will be accepted in most cases.

Don't blow this shit off.  This monetary system of ours can not be escaped so long as it exists.

The bank lends you 100, you agree to pay back 110. You use that 100$ to generate 200$ worth of goods. You pay back the bank 110$, you keep 90$. 10$ of money enters the moneytary system and no debt remains.

You're right that it is viable to maintain current energy levels, but when you start talking about bots roaming the planet and growing food in sky scrapers with artificial lighting you're talking about a massive increase in energy production.

This trend also follows human nature. If energy become essentially free we're going to naturally utilize a lot more of it which none of these models take into effect when factoring in the effects on the climate.

This is speculation, but I feel it's worth considering that we track CO2 and its correlation to global temperatures simply because it is a metric in which we can. While water vapor is in practice a much bigger driver of climate change we have no way to measure it throughout history, so as it stands we do not know to what degree correlation is distinct from causation here.

In other words there is a direct correlation with CO2 release and water vapor/total green house gasses, but it would be a fallacy to believe that simply because we then stop CO2 emissions that in turn means we stop the production of green house gasses in the same way that it would be a fallacy to believe that removing alcohol removes a persons desire to drink. To reiterate this is purely speculation on my part based on my own understanding, but I challenge someone to prove me wrong.

I saw a news article saying the government wants too block out half the sun or some shit in order to control climate change...look it up I forget the details

The $200 used to pay you for the goods you produced was created the same way as the $100 you got from the bank.  Somebody out there got this newly created bit of money the bank miscalls a 'loan' and it is demanded that they too repay more than was created.

In this economy with three players...the bank, you and the one who bought your goods, there was a total of three hundred dollars within it.  And a demand that $330 be repaid.

Humans aren't going to fundamentally change the way they live.  They aren't going to suddenly set aside their immediate desires in service of some long-term good.  That's not the way we're wired.

Even if it were, it's too late.  If we reduced carbon emissions to zero right now, the planet would continue to warm for another 40 years.  Since zero emissions is an unattainable goal anytime soon, that only means that warming will continue for longer than 40 years and at a faster rate.

That's not how all currency within the moneytary supply necessarily was created though, that is how it is now created. Regardless I will contend that in so far as reasonable limits of this discussion goes we should probably assume the system has always worked as it does now which if you have zero or negative net worth it effectively has.

Ie, it's a pyramid scheme, plain and simple. You can tell how invested someone is in it by how adamantly they will defend it, or of course how naive they are, the two are not mutually exclusive .

In reality, the vast majority of money worldwide has always been created that way.  The modern exception usually being printed dollars and cents, which might make up less than 1% of it.  And it nearly always has been, notable exceptions being  Abraham Lincoln's greenback and the early American colonial Scripts.

I hope for future generations that DQ and Enlil are wrong ,but, pre system, there has to be a general consensus that the problem exists.

Science overwhelmingly suggests the temperature can rise. According to NASA, the last two years saw a substantial drop in temperature( https://www.realclearmarkets.com/articles/2018/04/24/did_you_know_the_greatest_two-year_global_cooling_event_just_took_place_103243.html )

Now, this tidbit will be used to disprove GW by one side, and somewhat ignored by the other side. That's my point, the battle lines are too distinct;whatever the data, plan of action, or implementation .....people are polarized to the Nth degree....it is alarming that agreement cannot be reached about our survival. Maybe we all deserve to die.

There is a possibility that climate change may actually benefit mankind more than harm it in the long run. Handling climate change may be the problem that finally unites humanity. I believe that we are capable of solving any problem, if we work together.

However, if that is not the case, I'm banking on Elon. He's fuckin awesome!
