Financially speaking though, it's quite significantly more expensive than a normal roof. I think the cost of these is supposed to come down quite a bit in the coming years, isn't it?

We get a new roof AND we get solar, so it's a 2 for 1 deal, which makes it a little more reasonable (we're due for a new roof anyway).

I don't know what will happen with the cost.  Hopefully by the time they get around to doing this, it will be lower.

i did the ygrene program with my old house, they do green renovations with no money up front with a 20 year assessment on the property. did a new roof, solar, windows/sliding doors, and hvac. really helped as at the time i was dealing with 1000$ electric bills in the summer months.

actually looking into trying to what i can do with my new place with the program although i want to convert a garage and flesh out a half bath into a full in there so im probably going to refi with a conventional loan instead. im not quite sure yet as my hvac needs to be totally redone also.

i would like to deck out my next place with those solar tiles, those looks sweet depending on how often you have to maintain them.

Tesla actually guarantees the roof for life.

We had a hail storm a few years ago. Within a day the insurance people decended on the neighborhood and started signing up people to replace their roofs. I would say about half the neighborhood got new ones, and quite a few got solar panels.

What does that actually mean? I checked the article and it did not elaborate. It's not as though a house has a natural lifespan, you can keep replacing things forever as they fail. Am I to believe that Tesla will replace the roof for the next 2000 years so long as you replace the walls and floor?

As long as the purchaser lives for 2000 years, sure.

The article said "the life of the house" not "the life of the home owner."

I'm pretty sure Enlil is correct, though I haven't seen the contract.

Then yes, it can be for 2000 years or more, as long as the house remains standing.

Edit: No, Krypto is right. The Tesla site says "the lifetime of your house, or infinity, whichever comes first."

Solar roofs aren’t a bad deal if you need a roof. If you only need shingles then it’s not such a good deal and panels make more sense. I've been told roof protrusions are a big issue for both, so with a complete solar roof you actually have to change these things. In 20 years panel prices, efficiency, or both will obsolete current technology, that actually sort of makes the case for just panels. Then again, as vampires, the roof might be better? Wake up to find you aren't generating at all.

I've seen mixed info on real estate value of solar panels and solar roofs. I'm no expert, but perhaps it's too early to tell. I did see a report on demographics where solar panel purchases are a lot like tv purchases, if you got lots of them, you're probably rich.

To be fair Tesla isn’t doing too bad and SpaceX while it’s miserable place to work is hugely successful [takes rip of joint and questions legality].

I actually lost a lot of respect for him on the Joe Rogan podcast, something JR seems to have a knack for doing IMO. Elon seems like a guy who got lucky and has been able to use his money to hire good people. Not that this isn’t respectable, I just held him in higher regard before. Now it’s obvious he’s merely human. Perhaps I was too optimistic...

As a fan of cars I do like the Tesla’s though. The ones I have driven are excellent.

Yeah, Joe Rogan is about as dumb as they get, so I can't sit through one of his shows.

I never finish it either. But on long drives sometimes I need something that isn’t music. I drove 12 hours out of 20 in the last 20, so... that’s how my day job goes some times.

I actually appreciate JR more than I used to. It’s not much, buts it’s more than before.

I used to enjoy JRs podcast sometimes, some of the conspiracy and psychedelic stuff is interesting, but I just couldn't tolerate his lack of intelligence after awhile. I can't think of a specific example off hand, but he will commonly entertain entire discussions that can be proven wrong by typing 5 words into a search bar. It just felt like my brain was deteriorating upon listening to him after awhile.

He's a total shill about 50% of the time. He also plays devils advocate on totally stupid topics just to make a 3 hour show. I don't like any of the MMA shows.

Those are some of the reasons the show sucks outright. That said, sitting alone in a car for 6 hours sometimes makes it worth a listen.
