Might be bacterial but the guy paid for the spawn so I'm not gonna tell the guy he can't use it. I think he'll get fruits.

That's really fucked up to sell a grow kit that requires the end user to pillowcase pasteurize.

I would take that spawn and Grain to Grain it and make 12 jars of spawn with it. Then in about 2 weeks, you could do a nice grow and save one jar to G2G again. Your choices are using it and not get that much fruit. Or G2G and end up with 10 ounces dry from 2 mono tub's and still have 1 more spawn jar to do another G2G.

The only way there would be a problem with that spawn is if it was in jars and even then you could use a butter knife to break it up. Once that spawn hits sub or more grain it will take off like a wildfire.

I would not recommend g2ging that spawn. There is definitely something going on in there. It doesn't look quite Ice cream but that is still some unusually smooth texture mycelium. Maybe because the bag was not fluffed up at all and it was like semi compressed after sterilization with all the grains packed really close together.

It's healthy enough to get some fruits but another few weeks in a sterile environment and I feel that spawn is gonna be unusable. Use what you have now.

I am sure that spawn is fine. It has just been in that bag for way too long. I forgot about a few bags and left them for about 4 months. That is how they looked exactly. I spawned some and G2G some. No problems. They were oysters though not that it matters.

It matters a lot that they were Oysters. Oysters are supposed to be kinda thick like that.

I just said to try it as a Hail Mary since OP got some free shit and probably won't continue.

LOL, really all mycelium will eventually get like this if left for a long period of time. The same thing happened with cubes when I was doing that type of thing. It is searching for a new food source. I have been growing mushrooms for over 20 years and this is normal when left for a long period of time. But this does bring up a good point. His friend may have not have gotten an active type of spawn. It could be an edible variety of spawn.

Hey guys,

So I realized I should have stated what this kit is actually supposed to grow! I asked my friend, and it was labelled as Stropharia Cubensis Cuban aka P. Cubensis.

I also found out that what I thought was coir wasn’t actually coir, but a brick of soil. I went out and searched my city and I couldn’t find any coir or vermiculite anywhere I went! That fact, paired with the multiple posts in this thread saying that the mycelium looked packed and needed to be put to use as soon as possible, I ended up just following the instructions of the booklet that came with the kit. I did want to do the monotube tek, but I thought if I waited for the different items needed, the mycelium would be wasted. So I apologize for asking for the advice and then going contrary to any advice, I just thought I needed to get things moving ASAP.

So I pillowcase pasteurized the straw, I then put the spawn into a large grow bag with the straw and thoroughly mixed it. I then put the bag of spawn and sub into the growing tray provided, placed it in a cabinet in a spare room, turned the heat up to approximately 26-28 Celsius and turned off the lights and closed the curtains. It has now been sitting for about 26 hours, and it looks like the mycelium has took to the substrate well and is growing very quickly. I’m observing numerous large patches of straw being overtaken with white mycelium. I do not see any other colours at this point, but I know it’s still very early.

I did receive the kit for free so I don’t have a lot invested, but I am really hoping that I can get this to work. I realize I have a few factors going against me, but I’m still hopeful. Is their any advice for me now that it’s been spawned to the straw? If the substrate does make it too the magical 100%, should I case it with the vermiculite/soil provided as per the instructions? Can it be completed by just switching to 12/12 light once fully colonized?

Way too hot mate.
70F/21C no higher for optimal chances of success.
You have to remember the myc makes its own heat too.
Anything above these temps gives bacteria a big advantage over myc.
I would just follow the instructions in the grow kit, it's your best chance at this point.
Also don't open the tray to look at it or mess with it in any way for at least a week, preferably 10-12 days.

Good luck and keep us up to date.

Okay, so 26-28 is too hot? The instructions say that, and most of what I’ve read is similar with ranges from 23-26. I’ll admit that 28c seemed a bit hot even to a totally inexperienced noob such as myself. So anything over 21c is too much?

If everything was done perfect, and the spawn was fresh then I would say slightly higher temps are fine.
Because that myc is old and you may not have alot of experience pasteurizing substrates, I would recommend keeping temps at 70f/21c to give yourself the best chance.
The higher temps allow the myc to colonize faster, but also magnify any bacteria or mould problem that may be present.
It's really up to you if you want to gamble it, but 28c is crazy, I wouldn't go above 24c even in perfect conditions.

Cool, thanks for the heads up. I lowered the temperature; it’s currently sitting around 22c. I’ve resisted peeking as much as I can but I just couldn’t help myself last night. When I checked in on it, it looks like the mycelium growth has exploded. I did note that there are a couple small spots where the mycelium looks a little fluffy. It’s still white, no discolouration, no foul smell. Is that okay? I also noted that there are water droplets on the inside of the bag. Is that okay?

I’m going to do my very best to just leave it alone from now until it is ready to be inspected. When should I be inspecting it though? The booklet that came with the kit states that it should be fully colonized in 12-14 days. Is that accurate?

Also, should I case this once fully colonized? I’ve got soil and vermiculite as casing material. Should I use that to case it or just transfer the colonized straw to a transparent tote, give it a 12/12 light schedule and fruit it with no casing layer?

I haven't been following, so I'm only replying to the last post with little context, but I would reccomend a pretty thick casing for a straw-only substrate. Straw loses moisture fast. If you have some verm, coir, hpoo or something else that holds water better, then you might not have to case. If it's just straw then you're probably gonna need to babysit a lot more than another sub.

Hey all,

So I think my substrate is basically fully colonized. No bad smells or discolouration thus far. The instruction booklet states that my next step is to case it with the vermiculite and soil that came with the kit. That’s where I’m at so far. I’ll include a couple pics of the straw substrate below. Any other pointers would still be greatly appreciated!

Looks nice mate, I'd wait a day or so for that last patch to colonize then pasturize your casing mix, allow to cool and then add a 1/2 to an inch casing layer.
You could even skip the casing but I would recommend it.
Into fruiting conditions 70f, FAE and 95+% RH and you should be shroom to go in no time.
