Tub stalled
    #25621480 -

B+ Ms to sterilzed WBS.. Spawned to hpoo, coffee grounds, coir  and aspen chips as a filler, all pasturized in PC. Jars fully colonized and mixed with substrate uncased 10 days ago set into fruiting conditions immediately. Four days ago went to a stronger grow light.. Knots formed two days ago but now seemed to stall out. substrate shrinking with a sweet smell reminds me of Windex. Any advice is welcomed..

it looks fine to me. I would think you should see pins in the next day or two. I suppose the smell could indicate a problem, maybe bacteria, but there's no way to know until you see something off. You said you spawned and put into fruiting conditions 10 days ago, but how long has it actually been fully colonized for?

Looks very bacterial to me. Might just be the picture but I doubt it if it has a sweet smell. Idk if it will fruit. Its only been 10 days tho so figures crossed. Maybe a casing would help in this case...

Anny other smell as mushroom is most a bad sign.
Try on the next only coir and spawn 50/50 thats safer later u can experiment around.

So this one went outside in the compost. Couldn't take the smell and no growth after knots.. Second batch was started with just coir. My question now is will birdseed and coir produce fruit?

Depends. Did you make clean spawn or dirty one?
Also plain coir is a better bulk substrate for beginners rather than poo.

Clean spawn is the nr 1 fruit producer in this hobby, forget about coffee and such

Go on with your (Spawn) only rye / or only Bird seeds
Let it colonize and bulk with an (sub) substrate like 50/50 coir/vermi or only coir then colonize and fruit the hell out.
dont play around on first time ^^ i think all try the best on starting and try so much but thats a fail.
Go simpel & got Pins

What he said, you want to pasteurize it, sterilized gives mold a chance. Also forget about coffee, a lot of experienced growers have problems with it, gypsum is far more nutritive and less contaminated.

Technically coffee is a nutrient source (nitrogen) and gypsum is not. That's also why coffee contams and gypsum doesn't. Either way you are still pretty much right about that both are unnecessary steps for home bulk cultivation :super:

Speaking about gypsum:

Shroomism said:
There's several benefits.
The main reason is to add calcium carbonate and sulfur, which helps to stabilize PH levels to near neutral so it acts as a PH buffer as well as adding minerals which are vital for fruiting.
It also helps prevent grains from sticking and clumping.

and if you still dont believe that is nutritive, the great RR has something to say:

Never make a casing layer OR bulk substrate without gypsum.  It adds dramatically to the performance and weight of your flushes.

Gypsum isn't a pH buffer.  It doesn't alter pH to a noticeable degree.

Gypsum supplies calcium and sulfur, both essential elements for good fruit body formation.  It also keeps the substrate or casing layer loose.

You don't really even want a 'long term buffer' such as limestone in a casing layer.  The life of a casing is measured in weeks, not months or years.  I recommend the use of hydrated lime to get an immediate pH correction.

While sourcing materials for my first monotube, I came across this stuff (click here). If the only reason for using coffee is for nitrogen, then why would you not use this instead rather than risking contamination?

Calcium is essential for your own body's formation as well but it's not considered a food source per say.

As a said earlier both gypsum and coffee are unnecessary for successive home bulk cultivation.
Gypsum is like do whatever you want with it it's harmless. Coffee and poo are not. I see all three as equally unnecessary for home cultivation on this level. (If you consider the definition of the word 'necessary' you realize that coffee and such are not necessary for this hobby. (Certain species grow better on poo, some need PH buffering, but for cubes is not necessary)

You can't get around contams you're always gonna risk losing uncontested food source to competitors.
But when your spawn is 100% colonized (preferrabky the only food source in your bulk sub) $contams are no longer an issue. Clean spawn mixed with plain coir is pretty much as contam resistent as clean spawn.

Adding a little coffee to a tub full of grain is like supplementing a 5 coarse meal with a shot of milk. That's why I see it as an unnecessary step that increases the workload and chance of something bad happening. Tho I don't have anything against coffee or poo or other supplements. People who know what they are doing or who are experimenting understand that these things have a place in mushroom cultivation for sure. But for simply growing cubes at home just to have mushrooms I don't see much use for it.

Sorry, by "this" I wasn't referring to coffee, but the product described in my link. To clarify, my question was why would you not use this nitrogen supplement instead of coffee if it produces the same results with less risk of contamination?

Test it out. If that was the case tho we'd ve throwing fertilizer in our coir.
