i have mostly been checking known spots yes, but not just for cyans. for the habitat as well... the indicating species have always been true to me in my hunts and im just now seeing them pop up everywhere. 2 weeks ago no not at all.

yes people are finding them north of seattle absolutely but i have not been in that area, i mean i found a couple cyans today, 1 mature and pins but its just beginning as far as my spots are concerned.

thats why im planning on making sure i get some good samples to cultivate some beds more locally so i can keep them hydrated during dry spells and what not.

i dont mean to argue lol, but i really am quite diligent and i feel confident in my abilities overall and ive im not even seeing leratiomyces ceres then i know its not poppin off yet. i always remember seeing them pop up before the cyans do, not that long before but before none the less.

when i say its on i mean large fruitings not 1 or 2 here or there lol its not worth the 10-15 miles of walking im still pretty sore in my knees from saturday lol... i promise you so good finds to show. scoured over several parks today and found no more then a couple cyans and a couple gymns



I'm not trying to argue with you either, I've just been at this a long time and see you continuously making the mistake of waiting until you think conditions are perfect.  While you are complaining about things not being up yet, people are making massive finds in your exact area.

You are making a mistake I see a lot of new hunters making and I am doing my best to get you off your ass and looking in new spots.

Go hunt mushrooms.

i went hunting today and it was quite great. twice that the shrooms have visited me in my dreams and shown me exactly where to go never having been there before. If they really do choose who they reveal themselves to, i certainly do feel humbled by them every time. Cheers to all of you. May your season meet your needs :smile:

Maybe they're like me and can't even find the wood chips lol. Seems like all the parks near me just have gravel paths. I've got a lot of exploring to do.

Is it more of a thing to put wood chips in parks in WA and OR?

Parks are definitely a shot in the dark sometimes, like the park I went to today, sadly didn't have any wood chips at all. But, this weird area next to it, that wasn't even really a park, was this long trail of wood chips through blackberries between the park and this area under a bridge. No way to know what was there until I checked.

The other day someone told me "oh ____ park has like a mile long wood chip trail!", excitedly my friend and I drove out like 25 minutes to it, and... *drumroll* BARK chips... So there was absolutely nothing there.

Something that'll help you hunt more efficiently over time is coming to an area being able to quickly appraise whether that area is suitable for cyans or not and you can avoid wasting your time searching places where they won't be.

Bring a friend and a spliff, and even if they aren't there, nothing wrong with getting fresh air in the little daylight we have this time of year, its good for ya.

Also, my rule of thumb, cyans HATE dirt lol

you can always attempt a double check with google earth/street view. but theres so many parks and what not that have wood chips. you can make them out without much trouble lol i can even see sprinkler systems with google earth. and sometime wood chips get fairly grown over so they might be "hidden" in plain sight but the time line feature allows you to go back and see how things looked before it was over grown.

i have several spots that are no longer visible and you wouldnt really see them or know they were there unless you found them when they were not so over grown

That's the difference between WA and BC, all of our landscaping seems to use this type of stuff:

I think it's cedar based and I've only really seen Coprinus comatus growing from it.

I know of one place a bit further away that definitely has wood chips. Heading there tomorrow.

So... I know you never ask about a patch, but what's the etiquette on revealing a patch? I have a great deal of interest in mushrooms in general, but I'm not into eating psychedelic ones. I ran across a patch today, which is cool from a species collecting standpoint, but I have no plans to ever pick them. Would it be against protocol to tell someone else where they are at?

I think if you reveal a patch in a public thread, you've essentially just killed it. It'll be torn up and trampled within the week. I personally don't see an issue with privately revealing locations, but I don't make the rules.

As for eating them... I'd recommend reading How to Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan. At worst, it's an objective and interesting approach to the subject. At best, it might inspire you to reconsider.

Yeah - I wouldn't post the info publicly - that seems like it would just be asking for trouble... I've taken people mushroom hunting for gourmet edible things before, but I would NEVER post where I pick on, say, a hiking forum... It seems like the same sort of thing.

I almost had to fight a crazy homeless person after taking this picture, no idea what he was so upset about. Didn't find much else despite finding a lot of woodchips

I personally say just leave the mushrooms to do their thing. Someone will find them on their own, or not.  If not they will produce spores and live out their life cycle, not a bad thing or a "waste" at all if that's your worry.

Also finding new patches feels great and part of that comes from finding them on one's own.  IMHO.

I see you are in Canada... I was about to ask if that was in Bellevue.. my SO was actually hit by a homeless dude over there for taking pictures - downtown, in public and not even of said homeless person.. guy freaked out and started yelling about not taking photos. Paranoia and mental illness runs deep in the population... probably had nothing to do with the mushrooms.

Yeah pretty close to downtown here too, I think there's a lot of the same issues with homelessness and opioid stuff. They also closed down our big mental hospital in 2012, I'm sure that didn't help. I wish there was a way to fix the problem because it can't be nice for them and it certainly isn't nice to have to deal with. It just really sucks when you get the attention of one of their outbursts. There's a certain something in the way they yell that just freaks me out even if I'm not involved. I think I'd rather see a mother bear, at least you know she's just trying to survive and protect her cubs

dang in bellevue? i never even really see many homeless the few times im in that area. there TONS around my area but ive never had any problem with anyone, everyone is usually chill. a couple of days ago when i was walking home from checking this spot at a new business type place with sod grass and bark chip beds like muhfreedumb pictured.

some dude as i walked past him yelled HAIL SATAN!!! :lmafo:

i couldnt help but to burst out laughing but it was just a crazy person or something like that. was hilarious tho at the time but then i feel bad for them. im sorry you have had so much trouble, but if it makes you feel any better about being safe, ive never had nor heard of any of my friends ever having any conflicts with "homeless people" unless the bars are closing and then its not even the homeless its just drunk people causing problems

I wish they all seemed so benign.... I live in the CD and we get some real whack-a-doodles over here.. One night a guy (thankfully on the other side of the street from me) was screaming YOU'RE HURTING ME over and over again, at no one... He must have had some serious demons in his head. We've got a day treatment center for mentally ill people right up near here.. I suspect that lots of them don't have anywhere to go when it closes. I'm very careful when poking around back in the bushes in the local parks around here... no desire to blunder into someone's camp or worse... a dead body... several have been found recently in Interlaken.

I work in Bellevue sometimes too - and commuting on the 520 bike trail, soon after it opened, I kept encountering a guy sleeping under a shopping cart in one of the tunnels. He was fine for a time - then he started screaming FUCK MICROSOFT at all passers by... he was cleared out after that.
