Imagine that only supporters have access to downvotes. Not thought in a for-profit way, but that only the ones who put their money where their mouth is in terms of site support, have the downvote ability.

That would cut down on abuse of the feature a whole bunch and add more weight to the -1

Ythan, who coded this site to the moon and back, would have coded the site beyond pluto and the oort cloud if just about any publically accessible feature hadnt been savagely and ungratefully abused by trolls to harrass other members with and give the mods, our volunteers, a ton more hassles, drama and work.

If you have to foresee any conceivable way in which a new feature can be abused to the detriment of the community for no reason at all, it kinda knocks the wind out of "lets surprise everyone with this fun new code thing." He has just about had to roll back half as many features as he introduced for no other reason than malevolent acting out in a community with a good number of thin skinned members.

I think -1 is a good idea if the commnity was tighter knit, but the world is being blown apart by people who divide and conquer and a -1 can add to dividing the community along with it.

-1 for cult only. And cult mods only?

am sort of with Asante on this
do recognize how it could be productive, and how it has been used effectively in places like Reddit
but it is not really conducive to discussion, and can make contributions feel meaningless

that said, am also in favour of there not being a +1 system,
so my more general position skews away from there being a +/- system

The thing is we do not moderate nearly as heavy as something like large gaming community forums.  Our social forums have a far wider breathe of whats allowed, both positive and negative, so people who want to be dicks will just be dicks in a post instead.  I'm a bit fan of allowing people to speak freely within reason but there definitely are lots of instances where people's input is just shit like 'idiot' or 'god you are dumb' for example and even if their opinion is justified it doesn't really add much to the quality of the forum or that post.  If someone posts some idiotic shit people could/would be inclined to just downvote as their '2 cents' instead of perpetuating whatever drama starts from said idiotic thread.

I of course only speak from the social side of things as I haven't been involved in cult stuff in a long long time but the points made in favor of it there make perfect sense to me and this site should always still have the cult stuff in mind as the primary driver for how things are built and done, IMO.  Shroomery is a lot of things.  It's an information source, it's a guide, It's a murderer of misinformation, it's a culture, community and even a life style for some.  The shroomery mission statement has always been about stopping misinformation about mushrooms and such, and anything that increases the functionality of the cult sections should take priority, IMO.

The social functionality of upvote/downvote as well as like/dislike is pretty well known and seen in other social media tools.  I feel it would be a mistake to deny the boon to the cult sections because it 'might' be abused somehow on the social side.  In reality, who would really care if their thread gets bad votes because it sucks?  If the votes don't actually DO anything like move threads down or hide them or whatever then it's nothing more than the social aspect of people saying 'this post sucks' and anyone who whines about it probably should thicken their skin a little and put some thought into WHY people did it.  We have trolls here but we don't have a whole community of them.

I'm a little high so hopefully that all made sense and I didn't just ramble.  I'll re-read my post tomorrow and hopefully I won't

Do agree with this; having it work as a method of curating information as was explained earlier strikes me as totally reasonable

besides which, all my input here should be taken with a grain of salt -- just a Shroomery fangirl stumbling from forum to forum
and appear to be the only person to have voted STAL in this particular poll :cookiemonster:

I think it could be a bad idea by creating "hate" as in "why is everyone putting negative votes on me?!". Might isolate people more if they get lots of negative down votes. Might discourage bad posting sure but also might put people in bad moods, possibility. Some people are super sensitive.

But im curious to see it tested as a trial thing. Just to see if it works as intended.

one thing that i think should never be done on a website is to cater to the least of us.  meaning, if a super sensitive person gets hurty-hurts from a few down votes, so be it if the larger common good is served.

but for those that think a downvote system might be abused, how about limiting the number of down votes any one user can apply?  something like 5 per day?  unlimited plus ones and 5 minus ones per day.

A limit sounds like a good idea. Maybe have it per forum per day. The coding might get complex thou.

What about a down vote that doesn't ever take the post score below zero? So if 3 people downvote a post, it's at 0 but needs 4 up votes to get a +1

It'd make any abuse and negativity pretty negligible, and help to ensure that only worthy posts get +'s, while non-useful ones don't.

People can just be more active with upvoting any really useful or quality posts.

I really don't understand why you all think forced positivity is a good thing in a community.  It defeats the entire idea of having a system if its rigged one way or the other.  People need to get less butthurt over insignificant things.

The thing is, many people who join and post on shroomery are super socially akward. So having a down vote might further bring down their self-confidence and will feel more awkward possibility.

This, this and this. Triply so!

Reading this thread it sounds like a downvote button in the cultivation forums is pretty uncontroversial. I'll probably work on adding that unless anyone wants to argue against it. Once the functionality is in place we could also make it an option for user-created forums.

Any thoughts on whether it should show +1s and -1s or do they balance each other out for a singular score.

I would prefer seeing both, maybe we should vote?

Also can we add that system to Mushroom Hunting forum as well?

Ah that's amazing news, thanks Y. Be great too see how it works there and in UC.

Hopefully it'll just be a little hit counter like the other one - easy for Y to code - and easy for us to read.

This is a great point actually. Personally i'd like to see separate scores with a singular score in between with the best post list only representing the singular score.

In saying that, and as much as i want a down vote button for the terrible posts not worth responding to, i can see a new wave of trolling tactics arising from this forming a whole new mass of issues for mods.

Good luck

Troll with it = ban. Start off strong and set examples.
I still think its going to be a natural fit for the cultivation forums.

How could you punish a person based on their perception? Sure there may be a person trolling with the feature, but how can you distinguish between trolling and a persona whom disagrees with everything that another person says? Polar opposite ect.
A plus one is based upon perception, and a negative one would be no different. You can't punish a person for disagreeing. This is what i'm getting at. I want this feature, i always have, but there are going to people that will abuse it and i can't see how it can be moderated effectively. It may not be worth the effort that it would take to maintain it.

Should be pretty obvious.
Just like with ratings that are also opinions and perceptions, and probably more susceptible to trolling.
