Maybe it’s a right winger making it look like it was antifa trying to make it look like a right wing bomber. Or it was an Alex jones viewer.

Investigators are trying to determine if the devices were intended to detonate or simply to sow fear. Officials told the AP that the devices were not rigged like a booby-trapped package bomb that would explode upon opening. They had timers and batteries but never went off.

The officials were still uncertain whether the devices were poorly designed or never intended to cause physical harm.

Quote:
Oxley, the explosives expert from Rhode Island University, said she suspected a single bomber, whereas former CIA agent Bradley said multiple people were probably involved because 'it's hard to coordinate that mail delivery on your own'.

Quote:
'There's a little bit of disconnect, mentally for the person who's doing this, it doesn't sound like it's a cold calculating person like Ted Kaczynski,' Bradley said.

That's what I said(about ricin guy). Doesn't sound like political motivation to me. Sounds like whoever is doing this was paid to do it and didn't care one way or the other who the targets were. It's professionally made, and made to look sloppy on purpose, and not meant to hurt anyone.

Quote:
'The small size restricts what materials might actually function in it,' said Oxley, who has built 130 pipe bombs at the request of the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to aid investigators.

Hmm. I'd have to go with it being multiple people involved as well.

EDIT: more recent conclusion, this was professionally done and made to look sloppy on purpose, by someone that's apolitical or at least not nearly as political as people are lead to believe.

Quote:
'This is more amateur than professional, but there's also professionals who could have wanted it to look that way.'

OK, so if you directly connect the two terminals of a battery, there is very little resistance in the circuit and you will drain the battery very quickly. However if you have a very simple circuit, for example a light bulb connected to the battery, the battery will drain slowly based on the watts used by the light bulb. My question is, if this light bulb provides only a little resistance, wouldn't a lot of current flow through and therefore drain the battery quickly?

Quote:
You are correct. If the light bulb only has a small resistance the battery will be drained fast.

That is true for any circuit, be it simple or be it complex. It's a matter of total resistance.

Now it depends on how it's connected in the IED but if you look at the pictures you'll notice it does seem like the the wires are connected to the battery directly, and the trigger, which in this case could be anything, is a distance away from the battery itself.

Thicker wire has less resistance, and so being connected to the battery, will draw electrons through it. The load is the wires being connected, not just the filament. That's why it would make more sense, if using thicker wires, to have the switch/connection closer to the battery. But that doesn't seem to be the case with these devices, so the wires add to the total resistance and load.

It's less efficient in a number of ways.

Quote:
So by this reasoning, wouldn't a 100W light bulb with its greater resistance drain a battery more slowly that a 5W light bulb which would resist less? – Kenneth Spencer Feb 8 '15 at 19:44
It depends on the voltage rating of the light bulb. A 220V 100W light bulb has a resistance of (220V)^2/100W = 484 \$\Omega\$. A 5W 220V bulb has (220V)^2/5W = 9680\$\Omega\$. So the less wattage bulb has a higher resistance. And will drain the battery more slowly.

Even when the circuit is not complete, electrons are still going to flow down the wires, and the more that can flow down them, the more it'll drain the battery. The articles repeatedly stated that the batteries were "small" , but no word on what kind of batteries they actually are and the specs yet.

https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/153159/why-does-a-simple-circuit-drain-a-battery-slowly

In any case, thicker wires, as stated, is stupid. Looks as though it was made to look amateurish on purpose.

EDIT: also kind of strange that the battery appears to be inside the pipe with the pyrotechnic powder. The drain on the battery would also depend on how conductive the pyrotechnic mix is, if it's in contact with it directly.

Holy shit dude. Please stop. You have absolutely no clue what you are talking about when it comes to electrical circuits.

Quote:
Fireworks mortars are two-stage; the round section contains the main explosives that produce the sky effects; the lower cylindrical section contains a propellant charge to launch them into the air. Since the propellant must go off first, the fuse attaches at the side of the propellant section near the bottom of the mortar. Yet the wires are attached to the top of the mortars and no fuse is visible.

Electricity is not an efficient way to set off a fireworks mortar. They use a fairly primitive, low-power type of black powder, which is activated by a spark or heat from a fuse. In order for an electrical current to set off the mortar, it would have to be substantial enough to activate the powder by heat. The type of clock attached may include an alarm function, but the current level is minuscule (a few microamps). I know this from experience; one of my early projects was a similar clock used to energize a gong to wake me up in time for work. It took several stages of amplification circuitry as well as a separate power supply, to do that. The power needed in this case would be at least as great as what I used for that gong, and probably more.

Two wires are used, but they go to separate mortars on each end of the device. In order to ignite the mortar, even if there was enough power, both wires would be needed at each mortar to create a circuit, or there would have to be a heating element connected internally. If there were such a heating element, the mortars would be superfluous.

A pipe bomb works by holding in the pressure of the explosion until it builds to a point sufficient to rupture the pipe. The stronger the pipe, the stronger the blast. PVC is a very inefficient material for a pipe bomb, because it has a ow yield strength and will literally melt from the ignition itself before high pressure can be obtained. It will work, but poorly.

Care to explain how I'm wrong? Didn't think so.

Liberals telling me I don't know what I'm talking about, but they cannot explain how I'm wrong. Typical.

I can’t explain how you’re wrong. Honestly I don’t know how to explain to you how wires work.  All I can say is the way you think they work isn’t correct.

You are really jumping to conclusions here it seems obvious to me it's someone who hates these political figures. Someone who has been radicalized. Even that no one really knows yet because it's still under investigation. It seems to me like this is a troll type power trip scare tactic from a right wing nut. I could be wrong but I really REALLY doubt this is some BIG Democratic conspiracy.

Well I spent 10 years in Marine Corps EOD. And all of TheRedneck's observations about the devices are accurate.

I haven't seen anything so blatantly a hoax device since the "the Times Square bomber" tried using fire works with bags of fertilizer.

How many experts have to share my opinion before liberals realize they're grasping at straws and none of them can actually articulately explain why they disagree with us?

I may not have a degree in organic chemistry or electrical engineering, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that this is a hoax. Liberals in this thread are trying to make this about me being wrong about the thicker wire being less efficient in these designs in order to detract from the fact that all experts are pointing to this being a hoax, and the only logical conclusion could be that it was a hoax perpetrated by liberals.

It may end up being a right wing nutcase, but at this point it sure as heck doesn't seem to be.

Yeah, random guys with engineering degrees and IED experience. Cute how you're nitpicking about the links and quotes from ATS and ignoring the fact that former CIA agents and other security experts are now drawing the same conclusions. Do you want me to re-post those links and quotes too?

What are you going on about? I don’t think they are real bombs either. I’m talking about the fact that your analysis is based on your hair brained and completely ignorant notion of how electricity flows through wires. And I’m not going to try to explain it to you. A number of us have tried and you just don’t get it. Take a class in electonics if you want to learn about these concepts.

Lol I was actually trying to have dialogue dude, stop melting snowflake we are chill.

I gave my opinion about it but doesn't it really come down to neither of us know because the investigation isn't complete?

Also, I read your article after you mentioned (some of which is questionable imo) it and the point is that just because this wasn't successful working bombs doesn't mean this isn't violence that is terroristic act. Bomb scares like this is tantamount to telling someone I'm going to kill you and can kill you at any time and leaving .

If someone had a gun to ur head and said that and left without killing you that is a threat against your life and you'd be scared for your life. Also he/she either was bad at makes bombs and found some internet how to and fucked it up. Or they wanted to look so real to scare these people in the way I mentioned.

No electronics class required to know that you have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to IEDs. You're nit-picking just like waves, and you're not backing up your statements at all. Just arguing emotionally like all liberals tend to do.
