That's like a tub and a half worth of fruits if you go 2 flushes. Not impressed.

I'll bet a spore print that he comes back in a year or 2 with a different handle, using a SAB and everything, never mentioning that this handle ever existed.

Let’s not be too hard on him yet. I remember a certain mod who had a similar start here. There is hope for him still. Imagine what a triumph it could be to bring this guy along to the point where his grow could be worthy of his hubris. He has a few days to sleep it off still.

Yikes, just got done reading through all the posts on this thread. Don't understand why OP was so angry. As a newbie, I wouldn't dare try to argue with experienced cultivators on methods.

I don't know about you, but as a newbie I already know that there's a strong learning curve to all this and you never learn everything there is to know, no matter how long you're in it.

Granted, that the basics are simple enough for anyone to learn, the fact is that within that simplicity a lot of things can go wrong with inexperienced newbies.

It's good that he's been able to have a measure of "success" with open air work, but the basic biology of fungi would make it clear to a 10 year old why there's a need for sterility and still air boxes.

Mad so basically there's a limit to how long open air transfers can go? So would simply just scrubbing down the walls, ceilings, floor, counters and surfaces with bleach get rid of any contams that could interfere with open air transfers, or is it a done deal either way with the contams?

I just don't understand why open air transfers would work at all if there are hundreds of thousands of contam causing particles in the air to begin with.

I didn't use a sab for a better part of a year. I know open air gtg can work. Just wait tho. Once you see 1 contam, it'll come back again before you know it. Once it does the more spores your house will get and it'll start to seem ridiculous that open air g2g worked before. Pretty much everyone here who ended up needing to make a sab knows this experience

The clock is ticking pretty much. As bleak as it sounds.

Because you're adding around 10% of colonized grains into a grain jar. Basically ensuring 10% of the jar is already germinated and thriving. This is huge in the world of microbiology. Other contams will need to germinate first, and start off at the microscopic level. Meanwhile, if you're lucky enough, myc should have theoretically taken over the jar before then, which is a huge unnecessary risk imo, given a sab costs <$10 and ensures a clean environment for transfers.

The chances you got a perfectly clean jar is ofc extremely unlikely, and you're pretty much guaranteed there is at least some sort of germinated microscopic contam by the time the jar has colonized. You can usually tell how healthy it is based off the morphology of the myc. The problem for a new person is they have no idea what clean myc should look like. If it's white, it's clean is what they think, not really knowing that most contams are white at first, as well as what clean myc should look like.

Usually, established myc is strong af and might push out a couple flushes before succumbing to said contams, this ofc makes noobs think their sub is clean af and makes them think open air worked great, when in reality theyre just lucky the contam didn't take over. This is what happened to me, and everyone else who started off thinking open air is possible. If however, the contams were a parasitic contam, a high load of spores got into the jar, or a classical bacteria contam that weakens the network enough for a mold to germinate.. Then they'd have little to no luck at all, and would need to rely on a sab like the rest of us here who have a high AF contam load in the house.

Basically saying that you can try to reduce the spore load in your house to increase your luck, or if you just do proper sab and proper tek, you'll have a much higher success rate, without needing to rely on luck for a successful grow. Also, using a box with holes seems much easier than sanitizing your house as well lol.

Thank you Mad for that explanation. I've never questioned the glove box thing in the past, although didn't have much luck. Then with an SAB things were very successful.

Years before knowing anything about this, I was told by the person who gave me shrooms that it was super hard to grow them. They explained to me how you have to use horse poo and buy the All American $400 pressure cooker, and how you have to scrub all  walls and ceilings and shut off all their windows in order to grow them. Then, after doing some research, I found out that you don't have to buy the $400 All American Pressure cooker and you don't necessarily have to use horse poo.

The whole idea was to get me to think that this was such a difficult thing, when it really wasn't.

At the time, that person was the only person I knew that grew shrooms, so I believed that person and trusted all they said. Now I know better.
