That was some really nice animation. I've heard that music a million times, though.
Umm, as far as the philosophy behind it...using the analogy of a frustrated machine unable to breath life into its organic experiment illustrating our difficulties with AI and robotics and such, I guess its not that original but I still enjoyed it. I like his videos as well, one is set to radiohead and the other is set to aphex twin, 2 of my favorite bands

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Not bad, is the song original? If not, what is it? Good song, really matched the video well.. good synching and such.

The video itself was also quite impressive..

I'd agree that it seems to be an analogy to the humans-creating-AI bit.. it also seems to suggest that it is a futile concept and cannot be done. It seems to be saying that we'll kill ourselves trying, heh. (I say this because at the end the robot rips out his own heart and puts it in the person, and it STILL doesn't come to life...) but this brings up an asynchronous point: the robot is still alive after ripping out his own heart.

Or maybe I'm reading into it a little too deep. :smile: (but that's what you wanted, wasn't it? :wink: )

The song is the same name as the clip, Lux Aeterna; Latin meaning Eternal Light. It can be found on the 2001 and Requiem for a Dream soundtrack. It was inspired by Gyorgi Ligeti's work of the same name.

Sometime in the 23rd century, humans had somehow destroyed themselves. AI robots, however, survived this time period and the focus is on one particular robot. This robot shows obvious compassion as he attempts to create a human in an old church... eventually giving his own life to the futile attempt.

The robot reflected it's human creators. It's hardware reflected human components and it's acts reflected human emotions; frustration, compassion, sacrifice etc. When one expresses something like a human emotion as an equation you lose something in the simplification; you can not reverse engineer that equation back into an emotion because subtle things were lost in the process. I think that the robots "human" way of thinking got the better of him. He wanted to be a mother; and what better way than to give re-birth to race that created him.

The clip ends as he collapses to the floor, dying. He had removed a crucial component from his own body in an effort to give life to his child. What the robot couldn't comprehend was the entire complexity of a human being. It thought of life as something that could be completly duplicated with identical parts, he failed because he didn't take into account the things that were lost in the equation when he was built.

No, I don't think the robot failed completely.  I think it actually became part human when it experienced emotion.  So what if the lack of a pumping heart killed it in the end... it was able to get a taste of what being human is.  And then, like all humans, it dies.  I don't know if you saw Bicentennial Man (w/ Robin Williams), but the same point is made in the end.

In Bicentennial Man, wasn't the goal of choosing parts that would eventually kill him part of his plan to be accepted as humans equal? The robot in the clip died for a different reason. Just as in Bicentennial Man, I'm willing to bet the robots were just as human throughout their life as they were the moment they died. After all both robots did something very human; goal-oriented self-termination.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

In bicentinnial man, the robot did not get degradable parts to make him more of conscious entity or human, he got them so that the society would be willing to accept him as such. It was simply important to him for them to do so in order to validate his own opinion/self image/ego?
