(newbie) agar help?!
    #25528463 -

Hi i was wondering if my agar has been contaminated by mold or if mycelium is starting to grow?

Thanks for the reply! i will post more pictures in a day or two and hopefully they'll show signes of clear mycelium "root" like structure, and i forgot to add that I've inoculated the agar about 8 days ago.

It's hard to tell from the pic, but there is enough mycelium there to do some transfers. Make
some more plates and clean it up some more.

started theses plates from a unknown spore print. the only thing that's for sure is that it's a cube strain.

I don't know if I'm paranoid but that looks like mold to me.
Best to use a loop to streak spores so you know where mycelium is and where mold is or just make a dot in the middle at the bottom of a dish with a marker and then drop spores on that dot.

:whathesaid:

You can make one from wire, plenty of DIY's on here to search up. I bought mine with a culture toolkit. The idea is a z pattern swab motion dragging the spores so you know based on where the colony is originating from. You have to be aware of dirty prints tho because it does happen a lot

Yeah I made one with wire and for the handle i used an exacto knife, but like a dumb ass i mixed the spores in steril water then streaked my agard everywhere ... so that's why im a bit nervous. Should of done more research before hand... i guess i got too exited :P.Oh and I've just received my agar plates ill be transferring the "mycelium" in the new plates tonight!

Ill update with pics before the transfer

Yeah man any water on a plate is askin for trouble.

If you don't mind sharing, what made you decide to go the pre-pour route?

well to be honest I was following the guidelines in a kit i bought but it turned out the kit was total shit. I bought it at a hightimes in montreal for 175$ (still got the box if yall dont believe me) and the seller refused to show me the inside before buying!!!(for the price i was hoping for a descent kit right?!) it included a cheap book about mushrooms, a  NON STERIL PLASTIC loop, one spore print, enough agar for 500ml, 20 plates and soil like medium, I threw out the medium and loop :\ At that point i knew i fucked up, so i decided to do my own research online and found a lot of good videos (willymyco on vimeo was really good!!) and threads (like here where the community is really kind with newbies ).

That last one looks like contamination for sure. The rest I still wouldn't speak on

First 2 are blurry, but appear to be creamy looking?  May indicate the presence of bacteria... 3rd looks workable IMO

thanks for the reply! yeah the camera i had wasnt the best :/ the first two are actually really white and colonized the hole petri dishes after 7days. I then took new transfers from the nicest mycelium dish. theses dishes are 60mm not the 100mm. I'll soon put them in grain with gypsum.
