Ethnic groups and psychedelics * 1

I'll just start of with that I have very few friends that do drugs and if I hang out with other people alcohol is the only drug being consumed.

When I watch videos about psychedelics it's dominated by white people, now I'm not saying that this is something negative I just find it interesting. It's particularly interesting since, especially shrooms, were used by shamans and different tribes in the first place.

On the other hand I might be completely off with my assumption. Do you have any inputs? If I'm wrong please debunk, if you agree do you have any idea why this is the case?

I'll just start of with that I have very few friends. Those friends are very close though, and don't do drugs but do drink.

For other people I hang out with, such as work colleagues in a social environment, some I know do drugs but most I don't know either way. I know people of all ethnic groups.

I bet there's 100's of people that we know or know of but are not particularly close to that do use some recreational drugs but understandably don't open up to people they aren't close to about it, and the same goes for most of us I suspect. This stance of playing our cards close to our chest so to speak will I imagine and hope will become less prevalent as use of certain substances becomes more accepted, mainstream and eventually de-criminalised.

Anyway, I digress. I've not done any research on the matter surrounding drug use by ethnicity but I'll bet someone has. 'Drug use' is a very broad term as well, are you including the whole spectrum in that such as opioid addiction, occasional marijuana use, misuse of prescription drugs etc?

I imagine religion amongst ethnic groups comes into play quite a bit with the majority of religions having a firm stance on the matter.

I don't understand the question. I'm white, but I have or have had friends of each of those races who used psychedelics. Do I select white because I'm white or...?

This poll wouldn't so much answer the question of what ethnicities do psychedelics so much as what ethnicities participate on this forum.

I agree with Krypto that the poll is kinda pointless.
However I love the topic. I hadn't thought about this much, but now that you bring it to my attention. YES! hallucinogens definitely seem to be a predominantly white thing at least in the US. I do know black people who trip, but not many. IDK if I could count the number of white people I know that trip.I can only think of one or two hispanic people and they are hispanics who mostly hang out with white people. same with the few black dudes.

I'm not too surprised with how black culture is in the US that not a ton of black people trip. That's not meant to be offensive, not sure how it would be even, but black people don't seem to have much interest in shrooms and LSD, especially shrooms though. IDK about other races/cultures. I don't think a ton of asians or Hispanics are tripping, but maybe I just haven't socialized with them enough to find out.

I think you are watching stuff different from me.

If you watch the VICE series 5/6 of those episodes were people of color. Salvia, ayawaska, and the early mushrooms were all known to Central and South American people. Peyote was Native American.

If you are white and do not mostly hang out with black people how could you really judge their demographic? You go to a concert or festival to meet strangers yet those strangers are not totally strange, they share common interests that brought you together outside of the drugs you use. Maybe black people do like to trip but within other circles than white people?

IDK man!
That's why this thread excites me. Maybe I have been missing out on a huge portion of tripping. Think about it. If I'm going to concerts and shit and it's just a bunch of white people tripping, but other cultures/races trip just as much than what is their equivalent of a concert? or maybe that's stupid, but the general curiosity remains. How are these cultures/races tripping because in my experience if they are tripping as much, then they are doing it in a different way, they aren't doing it with all the white people. So where and how are they doing it?

@tathlyn, maybe we are watching different documentaries on vice, but a lot of those docs are in south america and stuff. Obviously the rest of the world is the majority of the world, but us Americans tend to get focused on ourselves.

Well looking at the current numbers is pretty representative of the racial distribution of the USA. It's dominatly white guys just because the people in Western countries who post here live in places that are majority white.

Yeah I realize that the poll is kind of pointless but I like polls haha. It could just be that white people are more open with their use and share their experiences more.

This image came mostly from social media which can be extremely misleading. But I agree with UncleTeds, it's probably because I only consume English media. As tallyn wrote colored people are featured in a lot of psychedelics documentaries

I feel like this poll is kind of valid I would assume most of the shroomery is white and most of the people who use psychedelics are white. Hence why most of the members here are white. Of course all types of people use psychedelics but I think White's use them more than the rest. I feel like other drug groups like marijuana or alcohol or opiates would have a more ethnically diverse fanbase

Whites do use psychedelics at a higher rate than any other ethnicity with exception of native americans. Oh that entheogenic church :wink:

It is also interesting that higher education and higher income people also have higher psychedelic usage rates than lower education or income.

That might be because that's all that's available to us. I dont get piss tested for shrooms like I do for weed or coke.

Strange, LSD induced psychosis in me the two times I used it, and smoking salvia divinorum leaves made me permanently deranged.
I'm naturally intelligent and mentally stable, and strong psychedelics simply ruined my equilibrium, made me anxious, and gave me panic attacks and paranoia.
I don't think that you can make such concrete statements based on a study that was done with a random group of people.
Everyone is different, and to make such general statements as "psychedelic users are more mentally stable and intelligent than those who do not use psychedelics" demonstrates a personal bias, and the statement itself is flat-out incorrect.
