That could’ve been a “diversity hire”, but I know that some places will hire inexperienced kids right out of college because they can get away with paying them less than the person with decades of experience.

Near Dylan

They probably hired the women because they could pay her a fraction of what they would have had to pay the experienced one.

Decisions like that isn't usually about race.  It's about $$$

That sounds exactly like the break I got into IT. They told me afterwards the reason they hired me instead of the experienced dude was that I had such enthusiasm in the interview.

It amuses me that you put it down to the fact she's black and female. How do you know she didn't have 100% more passion for it than he?

I met the guy. He was clearly an aboslute pro. British and everything. Not to be rude, but this girl is a straight up stereotype southern black girl who's done nothing for the past month but be taught how to do her job that she's getting paid a phat salary to do. Im sure she's getting paid less than the standard in the position, but it's one of those positions where cutting corners is not exactly a smart move. A lot can go wrong. And so far she's sat around and done nothing but complain about how things are done here while everyone jumps through hoops trying to get her on the same page. She only speaks English, went to some never-heard-of school in some never-hear-of state, studied only Anthropology which barely even nudges towards the skills required for the position she's in, etc.

It's certainly possible that they hired her just to pay her less and watch her gain weight eating hot cheetos in the back-office. But im sure that "first black female" title was lookin pretty attractive to my boss.

At times, yes, of course. If I go to a strip club I don't wanna see some hairy dude poledancing. If I take my motorbike into the shop, I wanna talk to a male mechanic.

Those two scenarios are very different though. Why is it important for the mechanic to be male?

This whole thing should never have been about boosting certain groups.

It should have been and should still be showing everybody that they belong.

Going to poke your thread here as saw something this morning that caught my attention but is not sufficient to motivate me to create a new topic
Eminem has apparently produced a new movie for youtube about rap battle culture

it is interesting to me, through the lens of this thread, because it reflects on diversity with white and Asian rappers in a traditionally African American cultural tradition

liked the line about targeted Asian disses (ie: recognition of Korean background) is sensitive to the lived experiences of the target

where do you stand on diversity vs homogeneity when it comes to participation in cultural traditions
do you want more of a melting pot scenario where people try to normalize to one standard, or do you prefer recognition, acknowledgement, and moving past differences between people?

It's not because I believe that no female is as capable as a male in that field; there for sure will be some, however I think they would be the exception rather than the rule. For the most part, men are far better suited to that field. It goes both ways; there's many fields that men are far less suited to also, IMO.

For myself, I would much prefer to see male mechanics when I go to one, and a shop that comprised of female mechanics may get less business than otherwise, so I think it perfectly fair for the owner of one to hire males only.

This is a bit abstract and preference related at this point, but I wanted to challenge st1llnox on his idea of 'fairness'.

I'm talking about settings where gender differences shouldn't come into play.

If I'm ever in a combat situation and end up with a girl for any other purpose than support, I would have no problem tying her to a tree before operating.

I might too depending on the context.

Guess who got hired? Lol

The shit is a definitely a bit of a stain on our workforce and its efficiency. It obviously would be immeasurably more efficient if applicants were judged on their skill and experience rather than looks and background. But it is what it is. It's for sure provisional. Culture changes real quick. In 10 years, this type of practice will be slowing down heavy, and in 20 it'll be all but gone. Mark my words.

Way to codify "black people cant do it themselves" into the institution, America.

There's six million things about this world that 'shouldn't' be. Such as it ever was.

Getting the hump because you're not allowed into a certain crowd because of your gender/sexual orientation (which was your original comment that led the convo here) is really foolish IMO.

If a woman is passionate about mechanics and autobody work
should she still pursue her passion as a career despite the 'obvious' issues a female-owned mechanic shop would encounter
or should she become successful in the sickstem so she can afford to do mechanics, and maybe build a custom hot rod, in her spare time

not asking what would be fair, just what you feel would be more practical
personally don't give a shit about cars and never seem to notice when they make a weird noise, that's what the little lights are there for :cookiemonster:

I completely agree, and would definitely encourage a female friend to pursue that dream, should she have it.

I was just making a point in response to st1llnox when this convo started.

That car mechanic comment was grade A autistic. I don't think anyones gonna be pissed if their car gets repaired and they find out it was a woman who did it. You really think a "males-only" hiring process for a mechanic shop is justifiable? Fixing mundane bullshit would be just as easy for someone with a pussy as someone with a dick. It's not like it's wrestling bears. It's bullshit with wrenches and machines, I don't give a fuck what tool monkey does the job as long as they do it.

Yes, but you're not mechanically minded and are the standard consumer when it comes to how you visit a shop. Seeing as I do most of my mechanical work myself, when I go to a shop I go to talk to an expert.

Horses for courses. I did make it clear above that it was a preference thing on my part.

Personally my priority would be competence. Competent male or female mechanic good, incompetent male or female mechanic bad. If it happens that no female applicants to a certain position are qualified, that's life.

IMO the whole "diversity hire" thing actually hurts people of underrepresented groups who actually are qualified and should have been hired anyway though, because some people will assume unfairly that they are incompetent.

A woman cant be an expert on making cars do car shit? I don't think it'd be all too much harder for a woman to be as "mechanically" minded as a male, whatever that bullshit means. It's not exactly a job that requires natural talent lol. It's fixin cars.  You don't need to be born with a specific "mindset" to learn the skills required, nor would it be reasonable to assume that a female wouldn't be able to learn them just as well as your shirtless neighbor Joe with the bad tattoos who's always working on his beat up Camaro
