Willamette Valler is dry as hell. I went up to the Columbia Delta over the weekend though and there are mushrooms everywhere. Probably saw a few grand in edibles just walking around fort Stevens. Too bad I didn't bring a basket.

I've been known to abandon azzie flushes to chase kings through the pines out there.

Largest king I ever saw was at Ft. Stevens.  I estimate the cap diameter at 20"  Looks like an elk had made a snack out of a third of it.

My hunting buddy and I also found a hawk and small coyote that died fighting each other.  Still tangled but rotten to near skeletons in the dune grass.

This concludes my random thoughts on that place, thank you marijuana.

well im going out later to search, even tho i think its still way to early lol. 1-2 more weeks and thats when i know its prime time.

but still gonna go search today seeing everyone pictures makes me jump the gun

i dont see much growth at all when i walk my dog, very very few almost none. so i dont have high hopes for this excursion but i really hope i return with some pictures to share

nah i just checked several spots i know they are at every year and there wasnt anything, ima say 1-2 more weeks and it will be poppin, 2 weeks from today for sure ill find some mature patches

OK, here's some speculation. I've been to more than one public park now with ideal cyanescens habitat (wood chips, water, shade) and found torn-up patches of mycelium. Like someone was grabbing big handfuls, chips and all, and leaving no trace of fruit bodies. One of these was a spot I had harvested cyanescens mushrooms days before.

The speculation is: could the parks department be doing this? I thought it could be wild animals or inconsiderate hunters, but I've seen the same pattern in multiple parks and never in wilder spots.

THIS, i have noticed this type of thing several times. not any specific season just a periodic thing.
i havnt seen the removed/scraped patches replaced with new wood chips, they just seem to be missing altogether.

I wonder...

Anyone lose an iPod at Fort Steven's? I found a fully charged iPod touch sitting in a patch of azzies yesterday. I figure it must have been a dune picker.

I only moved to the PNW from California a few months ago and have really been trying to learn my stuff of late. I think I can now immediately rule out a lot of look-alikes and I've scouted a lot of places to look that seem promising. It's so frustrating waiting for the rain, my girlfriend is out of town this weekend and I cannot wait to spend every hour of daylight outside in the parks and fields.

Just wanted to vent, I'm getting so obsessed. I see little cespitose clusters of LBMs every time I close my eyes.

well it seems we need a cold snap in the areas i frequent, seens lots of growth but only 2 cyanescens total 1 mature and 1 pin. lots and lots of indicators everywhere tho.

when its on tho its gonna be on!

not in my area its not lol. i have A LOT of spots, seems to be on in seattle and north.. but SW seattle not so much.. ive checked and they just havnt been up.

are you saying they are popping up in my spots and im not seeing them? cuz i remember you telling me it was on a the beginning of october when in my spots, they were all literally bone dry and there was almost 0 growth of any kind. 2 weeks ago when i checked, there was a slight amount of growth but no where near what i expect. and i was not finding any leratiomyces ceres even.

today i found leratiomyces ceres everywhere but dont see many cyanescens yet. so no i dont think its on yet for me.

i notice leratiomyces ceres pop up before the cyanescens do in my experience so based on how everything is going i expect it to be on for me soon...

dunno why none of my spots are popping much but i havnt made it to seattle or north and havnt made it south past tacoma, i have been stuck in the middle.

another clue is usually when i hunt and i find tons of cyans, its cold enough for me to bitch about it lol. everytime i have went out lately it hasnt been that cold... maybe its on where you live but where i have been looking its not yet

as much as i hate to believe it, i truly believe the worst patch destroyers are the squirrels and rats. they give no fucks about preserving the patch and have stolen clumps from my cultivated patches many a time. makes sense if you think about it. they forage like the rest of us

You are in seattle area, yes?

It's been on there for a long time now.

If you're just returning to old patches you are going to lose out.  People getting buckets of them either cultivate or continuously search out new patches.

Go, find them.  Check new spots.  It's happening now.

i do check new spots lol. i am in seattle but not IN seattle i am south of seattle.. its a bit different. im not really very mobile so i cant really just mob around all over unless i have a friend with a vehicle.

i have mostly been checking known spots yes, but not just for cyans. for the habitat as well... the indicating species have always been true to me in my hunts and im just now seeing them pop up everywhere. 2 weeks ago no not at all.

yes people are finding them north of seattle absolutely but i have not been in that area, i mean i found a couple cyans today, 1 mature and pins but its just beginning as far as my spots are concerned.

thats why im planning on making sure i get some good samples to cultivate some beds more locally so i can keep them hydrated during dry spells and what not.

i dont mean to argue lol, but i really am quite diligent and i feel confident in my abilities overall and ive im not even seeing leratiomyces ceres then i know its not poppin off yet. i always remember seeing them pop up before the cyans do, not that long before but before none the less.

when i say its on i mean large fruitings not 1 or 2 here or there lol its not worth the 10-15 miles of walking im still pretty sore in my knees from saturday lol... i promise you so good finds to show. scoured over several parks today and found no more then a couple cyans and a couple gymns

i completely agree lol, when i first started out i used to think i was seeing "patch rape" committed by kids or other uncaring greedy individuals. but the more i encountered it i started to think it was raccoons and what not, it happens.

When I lived in washington I could never find anything since it seemed so many people knew about hunting cyans and anywhere you'd think to check, someone had already been there or was going to be, so you could either grab the pins or someone else would.

I'm in BC now and very rarely do I see anyone else hunting, and most people I meet are astonished when I tell them you can find active mushrooms here. Seems like a less well known thing here.
