I simply believe that underlying straightness and gayness lies the neuronal ability to "flip the switch".

Not easy, near impossible, but not, completely, I think.

I just believe that nurture can override nature in this regard.

How is that "hetero erasure" and not "homo erasure" while its in fact neither?

started calling myself bi because a week or two of the year I'll be attracted to women. 98% of the time I'm 90-100% gay but it turns out this is called "bi-cycling" and having your orientation wander around is actually rather common. I've only been able to be straight on demand once but that was whilst on peyote.

IMO anyone who can "switch" was probably bi all along in their wired inclinations. But there seems to be a huge disconnect between whatever those inherent inclinations might be and the corresponding social categories that people align with in our culture.




I had a friend in high school whose dad seemed to match up with every flaming gay stereotype regarding speech and mannerisms etc. His parents seemed to get along great. I don't know if he ever discussed the matter with his dad.

i always thought my moms cousin was gay but he has a really ugly wife and two kids. i just think theres all types of people in the world and its a good point arent always going to fit into some type of cookiecutter social categories. when theres like a billiondy people in the world surely something like this happens a bunch. people are very complex and the brain and psyche are dynamic and constantly changing throughout life. i thought people here would be more open and accpeting to this :shrug:

I'm not sure what it is that you think I don't accept. I'm just saying that people's biological drives are something distinct from the socially constructed categories that people claim affiliation to in our culture.

OK I think we may have had a bit of a miscommunication in there somewhere.


I guess if there is something I don't necessarily accept at face value it's that the categories people place themselves into are always the whole story. And I'm skeptical of the switching thing too, if you had past attraction to whatever sex then I'm confused how that would just disappear entirely (maybe it does happen, I don't know). But I think it's great if people can just be themselves, and I hope that a lot of the social categorization stuff kind of just fades away.

I was definitely going to end up straight or bi but spent most of the time since 16 almost completely gay, plus I didn't realize being part time straight/bi counts but for this reason the label of bi is very handy for a lot of people because it catches the entire spectrum of interhuman sexual expression as far as the gender axis goes.

I do wish I could control who I was attracted to.

Psi and CHief, those stories are interesting. They really go to show how enforcing or promoting gay stereotypes hurts EVERYONE.


As an aside there have been maybe 5 people in the last 5 or so years whom I have come out as "1% straight/would like to bang a girl every now and then" so I kind of thought maybe my close friends have me filed under bi anyway, but I asked one what he thought about the official banner change whom I told like 2 years ago and he said he thinks I'm fooling myself. :shrug:

In talking with two different people, one online, one IRL who are gradually turning gay from bi.

people seem to switch from straight to gay, neither of the two is more magical. so the reverse can also be true.

You can however not convert someone, nor should you try. A homo ain't broke, thats just fine as it is.

I personally am not attracted to anyone sexually.. or at least it's very rare.. i just find humans kind of disgusting.. which really has nothing to do with this thread :smile:

BUT.. i have zero doubt that people go back and forth.. in the end it comes down to if you love a person.. not how their genitals look..
