Do you know anyone that switched from gay to straight?

Just curious if anyone has any stories to share, particularly regarding gay men that started dating women and stuck to it or even got married and had kids.

What was the story?

Were they lqtently bi, or did their attraction change, or did they just decide they didn't want to be on that team anymore? What was their motivation? How did they handle the transition (ie did girls think it was odd they'd dated men for the years before meeting them?)

Please share and thanks in advance. I don't have any to contribute myself but I watched the movie "I Am Michael" and it has me wondering what normal ex gays are like.

I know about that and even the remnants of the cottage industry about that, plus Spitzer's study and all that (first scientific paper I ever read).

I'm looking for secondhand anecdotal accounts of particular individuals and the outcomes thereof.

I have only ever seen it when they were testing the gay water not going full on gay.  Usually young and not real committed besides exploring.

ive seen this happen a few times mostly with women. i bet it happens more often than u guys are making it seem. people today are more sexually fluid and open and thinking people are just gay thier whole life seems like a very outdated and basic way of thinking. i thought the shroomery would have been more progressive. so sad.

i just chalk it up to being young and horny. nothing was really labeled or open.

like i used to have a roommate who was gay and a straight friend would crash in his room when he would get too high to go home. no one really thought of it until it was like 2x a week. he eventually was sleeping with my roommate for like 6 weeks almost nightly. when it was brought up it was "
just cuddling" lol we of course didn't care but it was all a little silly, very much closet case type behavior.

i also had another friend that used to have sex with a gay friend on mine in highschool (in secret) then was "straight" although seemed to enjoy butt play with his then girlfriend. i once came home early and he was having sex with his girl and a 3rd girl.

i don't know, i personally have known i am gay since i was like 12 and knew it before just didn't know what it meant so i don't know a lot about feeling out the water. i tried to have a girlfriend when i was 15 to try and it didn't work. she only wanted to have sex and i wanted everything but sex at that time lol. it was a confusing 3 months trying to get out of it.

I simply believe that underlying straightness and gayness lies the neuronal ability to "flip the switch".

Not easy, near impossible, but not, completely, I think.

I just believe that nurture can override nature in this regard.

started calling myself bi because a week or two of the year I'll be attracted to women. 98% of the time I'm 90-100% gay but it turns out this is called "bi-cycling" and having your orientation wander around is actually rather common. I've only been able to be straight on demand once but that was whilst on peyote.

IMO anyone who can "switch" was probably bi all along in their wired inclinations. But there seems to be a huge disconnect between whatever those inherent inclinations might be and the corresponding social categories that people align with in our culture.




I had a friend in high school whose dad seemed to match up with every flaming gay stereotype regarding speech and mannerisms etc. His parents seemed to get along great. I don't know if he ever discussed the matter with his dad.

i always thought my moms cousin was gay but he has a really ugly wife and two kids. i just think theres all types of people in the world and its a good point arent always going to fit into some type of cookiecutter social categories. when theres like a billiondy people in the world surely something like this happens a bunch. people are very complex and the brain and psyche are dynamic and constantly changing throughout life. i thought people here would be more open and accpeting to this :shrug:

OK I think we may have had a bit of a miscommunication in there somewhere.


I guess if there is something I don't necessarily accept at face value it's that the categories people place themselves into are always the whole story. And I'm skeptical of the switching thing too, if you had past attraction to whatever sex then I'm confused how that would just disappear entirely (maybe it does happen, I don't know). But I think it's great if people can just be themselves, and I hope that a lot of the social categorization stuff kind of just fades away.

I was definitely going to end up straight or bi but spent most of the time since 16 almost completely gay, plus I didn't realize being part time straight/bi counts but for this reason the label of bi is very handy for a lot of people because it catches the entire spectrum of interhuman sexual expression as far as the gender axis goes.

I do wish I could control who I was attracted to.

Psi and CHief, those stories are interesting. They really go to show how enforcing or promoting gay stereotypes hurts EVERYONE.


As an aside there have been maybe 5 people in the last 5 or so years whom I have come out as "1% straight/would like to bang a girl every now and then" so I kind of thought maybe my close friends have me filed under bi anyway, but I asked one what he thought about the official banner change whom I told like 2 years ago and he said he thinks I'm fooling myself. :shrug:

In talking with two different people, one online, one IRL who are gradually turning gay from bi.

people seem to switch from straight to gay, neither of the two is more magical. so the reverse can also be true.

You can however not convert someone, nor should you try. A homo ain't broke, thats just fine as it is.

Bold part is a sign of them being gay in my opinion.
In my experience, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck, period. They may not act on it but extremely effeminate men are gay or have the desire, or sneak it somewhere, that is just my (one person) experience in my 53 years here and 26 years of being out and going to bars, parties, etc...I have also met extremely manly men that are married and claim that "my wife knows and we have an agreement for the sake of the kids" and other such excuses. I still get turned on by older chubby pretty women.:shrug: Haven't been with one since 1998 though and am very happily married to a man now. Never married a woman or had kids with one (that I know of). (my sig looks like my partner)

Plenty of people don't care about sexual orientation but just plain don't like the gay community, including every single gay or bi person I have ever been able to stand enough for them to become an acquaintance or member of the same group of friends. On another note, I had a thought the other day that this new gender fluid non binary thing is something that young people can focus on and try to be different. I don't think people change totally. I think it's like a scale and the relative weights differ. I think what changes is how people label and identify themselves.

Overall I find women much more attractive than men. They're beautiful. I like touching them more. But sleeping with men is better. I just don't get the outcome I want with women. So my brain likes women more, my vag likes men more.

I know you're joking.
