"Go straight" or "Go forward"?

So I'm driving along and my friend is telling me where to go. I stop at a stop sign and ask "Where to?" He says "Go forward." So I proceed to make a right turn. He looks at me like I'm an idiot and says "I said go forward!" I reply "Does it look like I'm backing up!!"
Of course I knew what he meant, but I've had this argument in the past and for some reason I just felt like having it again with this guy on this day. I have always maintained that "go forward" is a poor choice of words. When asked for directions at an intersection you should reply with "go straight". And I can back up my opinion with a logical argument...
Telling someone to "go forward" implies what? Well, the opposite of forward would be backward. So essentialy you are telling someone that as long as they don't go backwards then they are proceeding in the proper direction. And whether I go straight, left or right I am still proceeding in a forward direction so technically I have done exactly what you said even if I turn. However, I think it is a safe assumption when I stop at an intersection that no one is going to expect me to back up! So telling me to go forward is redundant, and I would be much better served by giving me a direction in which to travel. Hence, the "go straight" command. What is the opposite of straight...to curve (or turn). So if you tell me to go straight then it is obvious that you do not want me to proceed to the left or the right, but in fact you would have me continue on in a straight line across the intersection. "Go straight" just makes a lot more sense then "go forward" to me.
Like I said, of course I'm not stupid and I know what he meant by "go forward". But for some reason this has always been a pet peeve of mine. I don't understand why people say "go forward" instead of "go straight". If anyone here uses the "go forward" phrase and has a logical argument for it I would like to hear it...but I still think you're retarded!

Dude, I agree with you....however, I tend to enjoy getting in arguement with people about pointless things such as that. So, I might just be fucking weird.

No, you seem to think there are only two directions, straight and backward. There are an infinite amount of direction in between those. It is not a dichotomy.

no, only if you go straight are you proceeding in the forward direction. Forward is the same direction you are heading, so any turn is not forward. After you complete the turn, then you are traveling forward again.
Here is a thing society says that I hate and fight against... WTF does "this" sunday mean? Today is wed. The sunday coming up on the 30th is the next sunday we encounter, thus it is next sunday. Yet society calls it "this sunday", and calls the sunday after next "next sunday". I will always call the day in question coming up "next ... " and not "this ... "

But you must go forward before you turn. His passenger did not state that he must go forward all the way through the intersection.

Do you? I think I can turn without going forward... Just turn the wheels before you give it gas. But I do understand his point more now.

Intuitive logic rules in these situations. To argue semantics, may be fun.. but on the flip side of the token it is quite useless when you fully understood the communication in the first place. Consider it "slang" if that will make you feel better... either way, the frequency of use often ingrains new meanings in words or phrases that may have different literal meanings. It is the way of change, the only constant in the universe.

But when you go forwards this model shows that you are going backwards as well. Therefor pressing the gas requires massive multi-grain consumption. Thus making the turning movement of going backwards seem like forwards is the correct destination for your mother, next Sunday.

so how does "forward" mean turn right, or turn in ANY direction? that is probably the stupidest thing to argue about...

Hahaha
I love being in these places with a bunch of straight dudes.
I said "go straight" once to my xgirlfriend whilst she was driving her wrangler, and she said "never." From then on, we only went foreword, never straight.
Its the gay friendly way of saying, don't turn.
And it is a stupid argument all things aside. (where's the limp wristed smiley?)

I was in a car with a gay man once and this chick was giving him directions. She told him to "go straight here" and he answered by saying " i don't go straight, honey, but I'll go forward"

I disagree with your argument. To go forward literally means to go towards the front. This means you should head in whatever direction the front of your car is facing at the time you receive the "forward" instruction.
