On the Identity of the popular Ganoderma lucidum.

So I have been meaning to type something like this up, it will be a record of strains that I have grown and confirmed to be or not to be Ganoderma lucidum. It seems to be a little known issue among the online community but the vast majority of Ganoderma lucidum out there being traded around is not G.lucidum.


First a little discussion on the species, and some clarifications which I think are important when considering what species of Ganoderma you want to grow. The Ganoderma that is held in high regards in Asia, is not in fact Ganoderma lucidum either. I will discuss why this is important below. Ganoderma lucidum is a mushroom originally described from Europe, London to be exact. Its range appears to be mainly in Europe with a possible extension into Asia if you count conifer dwelling specimens. Molecular studies of the ITS region of Ganoderma DNA have helped greatly to distinguish between species. There are various species groups within the genus that are helpful towards understanding the identity.

This is a highly simplified tree using sequences collected from Genbank, meticulously selected for their distribution. You will notice two groups with species labeled G.lucidum, one for Europe at the bottom, and one in Asia in the middle, I left the names as lucidum for the Asian specimens to illustrate my point, but only the bottom species group is G.lucidum.



G.lucidum from the United States will fall into one of two clades, the G.curtisii clade, or the G.resinaceum clade. In the wild they are easily distinguished as resinaceum rarely has a stipe and grows sessile. The bottom resinaceum clade represents our "G.lucidum" several mycologists hold that G.resinaceum is synonymous with G.lucidum based on both species preference for hardwood. They also consider G.curtisii a synonym, here clearly refuted by my tree. The North American species is actually Ganoderma sessile (bottom resinaceum in my tree) , a name applied to North American specimens by W.A. Murrill in 1902. Most of the cultures going around the shroomery are this species. You can tell if this is what you have by pricking or otherwise damaging the white growth edge and seeing if it bleeds a yellow resin, this is a trait of the G.resinaceum clade.

But why does it matter? It matters because although a few members of Ganoderma have been tested for their medicinal compounds, nowhere near all of them have been. Most studies have been done on the Asian species (Under the name G.lucidum) The Aisan species has been shown to so far contain the highest number of Medicinal compounds. And NOT every species contains the same compounds or the same amount of compounds. Some contain a great deal less than the Asian species.  There is also the real possibility that some species may not be beneficial long term. That certain compounds may be more harmful over time. There has been a few reports of liver toxicity from Ganoderma preparations, though this may be due to adulteration it is wise to tread lightly. One species was shown to be toxic to brine shrimp, not sure how that would scale to humans though.

Below is a list of strains I have grown and Identified.

Aleon 1- Ganoderma resinaceum sensu lato
Fungi Perfecti - Ganoderma resinaceum sensu lato
Lipa U- Ganoderma resinaceum sensu lato
Aloha Medicinals SCL- Ganoderma resinaceum sensu lato
(If you are looking for G.lucidum from Aloha  the VT strain looks to be good based on the ITS sequence posted on their website)

Several cultures also simply labeled as G.lucidum also showed to be G.resinaceum sensu lato.

One culture said to be commercially grown in China is Ganoderma weberianum. (no strain name) Got in a trade with a user in Germany.

Forresters culture may be Ganoderma lingzhi, I have not grown it yet but do have it in my collection.

I am not sure if Ganoderma lucidum from Europe has been tested for its medicinal compounds yet, and I know that G.sessile here in America has not been, though there may be some data out there if the major culture banks are testing their strains.  I will add more cultures to this list as I get named cultures, or cultures from a known supplier.


G.sessile (G.resinaceum sensu lato) seems to grow great and is well suited to home cultivation like we do on these forums, hence its wide availability. I am very interested to see the results when someone does some research on this species.  I know a guy who makes a mix of various species for his tinctures, I think this is a great idea if you want a well rounded Ganoderma medicinal.

I have been thinking of offering a service where you can send me a strain and I will identify it, but it can be tricky to put an ID to a strain without information about where it was collected and what its progenitor was growing on in the wild. Hence why I labeled the strains above sensu lato (in the broad sense). For example G.meredithae and G.curtisii are exact in every way except meredithae grows on pine and curtisii grows on hardwoods like oak or maple (not even personally convinced they are separate species) . I could offer to send samples off for DNA sequencing.

But I am not sure if there would be an interest,or what to charge. or that people really care what they are growing:shrug:, but I am putting the info out there anyways. :cool:

So what Ganoderma is the revered Asian reishi, and where does one aquire that correct strain?

I'd love to land an authentic European lucidum for my collection, but also would really like the real-deal Asian conk. :biggrin:

Why has the European reishi overshadowed the elusive Asian variety?  Does it really exist or is it only a thing of myth?

The Asian species is Ganoderma lingzhi, so there is some contention among Asian mycologists. Further complicating the issue is a second name, Ganoderma sichuanense. One camp considers the widely cultivated Asian species to be G.sichuanense while the other things G.lingzhi is valid. DNA extracted from the holotype of G.sichuanense does not match that from the holotype of G.lingzhi. For now I consider G.lingzhi to be the proper name.


The reason the name G.lucidum has been so widely used is because it is the type species for the Ganoderma genus, it is the original Ganoderma against which all others are compared. The issue comes where the original specimen used to describe the species is no longer in exsistence so a neotype was choosen, some people consider that neotype invalid. Gilbertson and Adaskaveg consider G.resinaceum to be a synonym of G.lucidum because G.lucidum was described as growing on hardwood and G.resinaceum grows on hardwoods. They looked at spores of G.tsugae here in America which have a rough appearance and compared them to G.resinaceum spores which have a smooth appearance. The neotype of G.lucidum has rough spores, as do several other conifer Ganoderma, since the tree that the neotype was collected from was not mentioned they say that it is probable that it may be from conifer and thus not G.lucidum.

They divided Ganoderma roughly into two groups, a hardwood (G.lucidum) group with smooth spores and a softwood (G.tsugae) group with rough spores. They did not however look at European specimens on hardwood themselves, only American specimens. However it has been long known (Atkinson 1908) that specimens matching the description of G.lucidum with rough spores can be collected on hardwood in Europe. There is an excellent look at the difference between G.lucidum and G.resinaceum in a short article titled Stipes and spores in two British Ganoderma species. I consider their division based on host species invalid.

When mycologists first studied Ganoderma in Asia in the early 20th century they turned towards known literature and concluded that the Asian species was the same as the European species. And the name stuck, the Asian species also has rough spores, and is typically stipitate, though is often marked by a yellow pore surface instead of white or cream as in the European species. There are also other distinctions, but I don't much feel like typing that all up when the phylogenetic tree shows the separation quite well. 


I have both species, but at the moment G.lingzhi is taking a while to recover on agar for me. I have not fruited it yet but I have confirmed it is G.lingzhi. The G.lucidum I have was collected in France and was deposited in a Belgian culture bank, the G.lingzhi was acquired by a friend of mine and has a confirmed Chinese origin.

Great info!  I remember you writing before how the G.tsugae has a 98-99% DNA similarities with the G.lucidum while G.curisii has a 98-99% DNA similarity with the G.lingzhi. 

Would you say that out of the top 5 most cultivated American species, all are all most likely safe?  Also if they could be ranked medicinally (out of pure speculation), then would they be ranked something like:

1) G.curtisii
2) G.tsugae/G.oregonense (are these two also 98-99% similar)
3) G.sessile
4) G.applanatum

Out of pure speculation G.applanatum may be at the top, in one study G.applanatum from Asia contained the second highest number of compounds to the Asian "G.lucidum" (G.lingzhi) Though the Asian species is again likely to be different from the American one. But worth noting.

Without any studies it would be hard to quantify the others. I have some theories that more resinous species may have higher numbers of certain compounds particularly triterpenes, I think that the resins are where the triterpense are found. I could be wrong, I am not a chemist. Terpenes are a major component in many plant resins. Certain species contain more resin than others, the resin is usually what gives the surface of reishi its shine, but it can also be found as dark shiny bands in the flesh of the mushrooms. These bands are present in G.sessile (mostly in the stipe) G.curtisii, and as squiggles in G.applanatum. So in theory the species with more resin deposits will have more triterpenes, some species like G.tsugae and G.lucidum do not have any internal resin deposits. G.sessile and other members closely related to G.resinaceum also bleed a yellow liquid resin when cut or injured.

What appears in this photo as white streaks above the pores is actually the shiny resinous deposits in the flesh, the white is the shine.


Here you can see the resin coating of a cross section of the skin of G.sessile, visible as the thin clearish layer at the top.



There are also polysaccharides to take into account, which are likely distributed throughout the cells and you cant really guess which species might have more. Again though this is all speculation and without testing the species we cant know for sure.

Hello, I live in Puerto Rico and I sometimes find mushrooms that resemble Gandermas and I have always wondered about them. Never tried growing one because I am not really sure if it would have any beneficial property. I would love to be able to send samples to more experienced growers so if the offer is still up please lets establish contact. Thank you.

Fantastic post!!

So sorry to be the "noob" to resurrect an oldish thread but I've been searching into the ganoderma taxa issue and found it frustrating to locate authentic Chinese ganoderma (G.lingzhi or G lucidum var lingzhi etc etc etc). As a ganodermophile and cancer survivor.. I've been wanting to start a true lingzhi garden...

Has anyone found a true lingzhi/Chinese reishi culture /spawn/LC/wedge etc etc etc?

The one referenced in 99% of the studies is Ganoderma lingzhi, as the majority of the studies take place in China. The sporeworks strain of "lucidum" is lingzhi. The chemical compounds in Ganoderma are rather diverse it seems with individual species having novel compounds described from them, but again the issue of labeling comes in. No studies have yet been performed on our American species. But if you are looking for something local Ganoderma curtisii is the closest American relative to G.lingzhi from China. Ganoderma lucidum itself is most closely related to Ganoderma tsugae and will have a drastically different chemical profile.

If this is true, it would make the cultivation of G. lucidum not worthwhile. But could there really be such massive differences? Could anyone enlighten me on this? Or is standard G. lucidum good enough?

The main issue is there is no standard G.lucidum. Most of the cultures that have been labeled G.lucidum have been something else entirely. Most of the ones on the shroomery tend to be G.sessile. Some commercial cultures like those from sporeworks are indeed G.lingzhi. Actual lucidum is rarely cultivated.

Truthfully it would be worth the cash to get it from a reputable place than to risk paying from a contaminated syringe...  I would love to find cultures or even spawn of the lingzhi or ganoderma weberianum or ganoderma scihuanese as well

Elucidating "lucidum": Distinguishing the diverse laccate Ganoderma species of the United States

The designation G. curtisii f.sp. meredithiae forma specialis nov. is proposed. Species such as G. curtisii and G. sessile, once considered as G. lucidum sensu lato, were found to be divergent from one another, and highly divergent from G. lucidum sensu stricto. Morphological characteristics such as context tissue color and features (e.g. melanoid bands), basidiospore shape and size, geographic location, and host preference were found to aid in species identification. Surprisingly, G. lucidum sensu stricto was found in the U.S., but only in geographically restricted areas of northern Utah and California. These collections appear to have resulted from the introduction of this species into the United States possibly from mushroom growers producing G. lucidum outdoors. Overall, this study clarifies the chaotic taxonomy of the laccate Ganoderma in the United States, and will help to remove ambiguities from future studies focusing on the North American species of laccate Ganoderma.




Identifying the “Mushroom of Immortality”: Assessing the Ganoderma Species Composition in Commercial Reishi Products

The majority (93%) of the manufactured reishi products and almost half of the GYO kits were identified as Ganoderma lingzhi. G. lingzhi is native to Asia and is the most widely cultivated and studied taxon for medicinal use. Illumina MiSeq sequencing of the ITS1 region was performed to determine if multiple Ganoderma species were present. None of the manufactured products tested contained G. lucidum sensu stricto, and it was detected in only one GYO kit. G. lingzhi was detected in most products, but other Ganoderma species were also present, including G. applanatum, G. australe, G. gibbosum, G. sessile, and G. sinense. Our results indicate that the content of these products vary and that better labeling is needed to inform consumers before these products are ingested or marketed as medicine. Of the 17 GYO kits tested, 11 kits contained Ganoderma taxa that are not native to the United States. If fruiting bodies of exotic Ganoderma taxa are cultivated, these GYO kits will likely end up in the environment. The effects of these exotic species to natural ecosystems needs investigation.
