Oilgasm - does anyone of you dabble with essential oils, aromatherapy and fragrances? * 1
    #25273659 -

I'm vaporizing some Jasmine Oil I got super cheap in my ultrasonic aroma diffuser:

and an uplifting floral scent wafts through the house. Jasmine has good mood effects, you perk right up, its euphoric.

Myrrh oil is actually a bit intoxicating and is beneficial for some skin ailments.

Rosemary wakes you up.

Anyone here into essential oils and all conceivable things you can do with them?

I've tried making various oils over the years with mixed results. If I had a fractional distillery I could make some better oils.

Last year we made lemon balm / lavender/ rose hip "sun tea" it was amazing.

My fiancée uses some essential oils for various things around the house, I’m not so into it.

You may not know about this, Asante, but here in America, essential oils are extremely popular these days because they’re being crammed down people’s throats by MLM companies (companies that use the pyramid scheme as a business model) as cures for everything from cancer to asthma, autism to arthritis, and literally everything in between.  While essential oils have their uses for sure, the pseudoscience behind them couples perfectly with the anti-science, anti-vaccine movements that are so prevalent today.  The result can be fatal; just last week I read of a woman who had withheld her son’s asthma medicine, instead giving him only essential oils.  The child died.  If you google about cats getting killed by owners applying essential oils to them, the stories are numerous.  And companies like Young Living and doTERRA are constantly recruiting distributors into their lowest ranks, financially exploiting people who’ve been sold on the fake “uses” of oils.

tl;dr- essential oils have their uses, but the way they’re being sold and marketed here in America gives EOs a real grim dark side.

That is a ridiculous story with the asthma kid. I had a friend in grade school, great guy but very asthmatic. I don’t know how many times I held the dude while he convulsed on the ground waiting for an ambulance, or had to run as fast as I could to the nearest phone. Atleast a dozen. It was traumatizing, 10-11-12 years old and worrying my friend was gonna die in front of me. His mother’s in tears hugging me and thanking me, can’t forget shit like that. Asthmatics can get over an attack on their own but the younger they are, the worse it is. Playing with fire obviously, too, as the story demonstrates. People are retarded. “He’s fine, step back! He needs to smell something fancy!”

Doterra is almost like Mormon medicine honestly. it's sad but these people are why we have to have labels on everything.

Mormons run a big chunk of the MLM game.  doTERRA, Young Living, LuLaRoe, etc are all owned by Mormons and headquartered in Utah.  I’ve heard from folks out that way that say being in an MLM scam is pretty much a way of life for lots of families in Utah.

if you believe in Mormonism despite the history of it, well that goes for all religions, but Mormonism is a pretty obvious scam right from the get go, preceding it actually.

Big families, lack of education, it all works.

Essential oils (and terpenes) are awesome.

You can apparently distill pure terpenes from essential oils, using steam distillation I believe. Been wanting to look into it more :strokebeard:

I own an alembic distiller - it often takes an absurd amount of material to condense anything into essential oil form - but the hydrosols you get from doing so are very nice as well

There's tons of legitimate uses for essential oils.. unfortunately like any unregulated market with lots of money involved, there's going to be a bunch of snake oil salesman and unscrupulous people. My chick is pretty heavy into them... I'm not so much. She actually does the Young Living thing, but she doesn't treat it like a MLM.. just as a way to get a few free products and a little extra money on the side and just grows it organically. But she doesn't believe in them as a "cure" for anything... just as things that can help 'treat' some things and some that are useful replacements for toxic chemicals around the house (like cleaners) and like everything you have to use your common sense and do your research. Obviously, substituting a young child's asthma medicine for essential oils is retarded as fucking hell. It is unfortunate that some people push them as a complete alternative to medicine or a CURE for anything when it's not and then some people fall prey to that retardation. They can be a complement to medicine in some cases but shouldn't be used as a replacement. Unfortunately lots of people don't do their research and will just listen to whatever someone tells them.

Mint is really nice as well. Found some c02 mint extract on ebay, interesting stuff. It's sort of a waxy oil with a very strong menthol smell/taste.

I tend to get headaches if I am around strong scents for prolonged periods.  I have a feeling it has to do with the other chemicals added to things such as scented candles, although it is just speculation on my part.  If I didn't get headaches I would use scented oils frequently.

When I was living in the Siskiyou Mountains - our water was creek-fed, extensively filtered - we still boiled it if we used it for drinking/cooking- but I contracted something from the water - mayhaps been from using it to clean our dishes - and it laid me near dead for three days - I was crawlin' here n' there all snail like.

What saved me, was my neighbor, a woman of 84 years - whom had glasses that made her eyes the size of walnuts. Bless that woman!

She told me to take eucalyptus essential oil and place it in boiling water and inhale it - with a towel wrapped around my head to capture the vapors.

Those blessed vapors done rid me of whatever backwater shit had infected me!

I done swears it!
