[Religion] Terence McKenna and God? What do you believe in?
    #10928980 -

I've listened to a LOT of Terence McKenna's stuff including his entire reading of True Hallucenations. A central motif he paints is this idea of the universe being connected by thought and ideas. As if Ideas and knowledge are the building blocks of life and everything that is. I find it a very fascinating and interesting perspective since I myself am an agnostic.

However, when you listen to some of his material, he makes references to God. One would have assumed he didn't believe in God or the existence of some sort of God/Devil religion, but instead a world of 'oneness'.

Do you think Terence believes in Religion AND this 'spiritual/knowledge super highway'?

What do you guys believe? My neighbor is super religious (Christain). I had a long debate with him the other night. He said that I might be going to hell if I continue being agnostic. I told him my standpoint is that there's simply too much information to be confused one way or the other. If the Lord can't reach out and touch me or guide me, I have no idea if I'm following God or the Devil.

Additionally, I think the whole idea of being created to be basically God's Ant Farm, to be a little silly. Why would an omnipotent being create something so trivial? Also, why would I be created and doomed to hell for not knowing who to believe? Seems to me as long as I lead a good, positive, loving life...I'll be okay.

Also, I think people being good to get into heaven is bullshit and fake. "Be Good for Goodness Sake". Being good only to get access to heaven is like being friends with someone annoying only to use their pool. It's bullshit.

What do you guys believe and why?

Terence Mckenna believed in some sort of earthly intelligence... In essence, God is an organism that we call the earth. An organism that has been evolving for billions of years. We are all part of it, just like cells are a part of our body. Its called the Evolving Gaia theory... I actually came to this conclusion on my last trip, and thats how I found Terence McKenna... Joe Rogan came to the same conclusion through his own trips too... I think there might be some truth in this.

What you said is right on.

I have no way to verify anything. As soon as any god force contacts me, of course I would dedicate my life to it; it's God after all. But I have no way to know if there even is a god at all.

One thing, though: If I were created, then I should have everything I need to be what I was intended to be. That means that I should absolutely no use at all for any bible or holy writings or followings of any kind. I absolutely will not take any teachings from any person of this earth. The idea of needing some paper book as a guide to life is ridiculous. I think any God could do a little better than that. All I have to do is listen to my heart, do what comes naturally. Because if God made me, then my heart is all I need to follow. I should have everything I need already.

What about people who were raised to be another religion, never having the opportunity to follow the "right religion?" What about people who live their life, never even aware of the Bible? Why don't they have a chance? Because the Bible is bullshit. It is written and interpreted by men, and who knows how many people alter and use it for their own benefit? I will not listen to them. I will only listen to God himself, if he were to contact me. Until then, I have no way to know if there even is a god at all, and so I will just go with the flow; follow my heart.

This is the exact explanation of how I feel about it.I have come to this conclusion.I tried to explain this to someone at school, but I could not get this across. She does not get it.She then stated under her breath as she was leaving,"I believe the bible/religion/Jesus/god just in case".

She also prays for good test grades. I tried to get her to look up info online about the scientific testing on prayer and its non-effects,she ignored this too.We are friends, but I know she is trapped into the single mind of "believe or go to hell" thought.

I wonder why so many different trippers from so many different walks of life come to this same conclusion? Maybe the earth is trying to communicate with us through it's psychedelic plants. I mean, what shroomer hasn't felt connected to EVERYTHING? Maybe because we are part of one big organism...

I also think it's really silly to create a bunch of beings to experience life, taste, see, smell, hear, touch, and so on but have rules that repress those experiences. As long as you're not hurting anyone (emotionally, physically, financially, etc) I don't see why it should be immoral or against the law.

I will say this; I absolutely HATE the catholic religion and all it stands for. Protecting Priests who molest children by relocating them, Indulgences (payments to be freed of sins and to get into heaven) and the fact that monks were used to make and sell wine as part of a business strategy. The Vatican is the richest organization in the world. Shouldn't they be BROKE? Shouldn't they be spending all their money on improving the quality of life for the less fortunate? After all, their theory is "It's better for a paulper to give his only dollar to charity than a millionare to give only 100k" (Meaning the poor person gave everything he had vs a drop in the bucket for the millionare).

Sorry Just ranting. lol

If I was god, I'd make beings that were put on a planet to love, and cherish their life. To experience joy, love, sadness, and all the other emotions. Not to worship me and CERTAINLY NOT to cast them into the pits of hell for worshiping someone else.

I've been trying to understand people like that lately, I want to really personally grasp how and why it is they believe what they believe. Basically I've been systematically attempting to brainwash myself over the past 2 months into believing all of the religious rhetoric and conspiratorial bullshit I hear being passed around. I started by taking drugs (2c-e) and going to catholic mass, and followed that up by spending a significant amount of time studying the bible, and the Koran. I read and re read damn near everything by C.S. Lewis, and any other christian apologetics I could get my hands on. I worked my way though George Robinson's "essential Judaism", an another book on converting to Judaism that I can't seem to remember the title of right now. I've daily studied Oswald Chambers my utmost for his highest, and even worked through a few books on the Koran. I've also watched every single Alex Jones movie I could get my hands on, and any other really out there documentaries(I'm getting ready to watch one about Zacharia Stichens beliefs right now)

So far the only thing I've learned is that you either buy into this shit, or you don't. Despite going out of my way to try and intentionally filter reality through a belief system that thrives on confirmation bias I've not managed to convince myself of anything. I'm beginning to believe that it's a distinct possibility that the people who believe this stuff might actually have a biological need to see reality in this way, and it might even be harmful to them psychologically to do so in any other way. In a sense, this skewed sense of reality may in fact be reqired in order to maintain a certain degree of mental balance.

On my first trip I began to realize the earth itself should be treated like an organism. But humans are failing to do so and have begun choking it with highways and cities.

See... another person with the same trip from a completely different area... I think its true... I think the Earth IS an organism and thats why so many people trip on it. We need to do more research with psychedelics to find the true answer i think...

This is what I was thinking too. Perhaps their psyche can't tolerate the thought of being purpose-less. If you think about it deeply enough (as in backing up far enough to see the trees, then the town, state, country, earth, solar system, universe, etc)...you'll see that there's no point to any of this--or so it seems. What difference does it make if we have a purpose or not. Isn't simply 'being' enough? Why does something have to have a purpose in order for it to be important? Why do we even have to be important for that matter?

Have you ever played the Sims? You'll quickly see what I mean. What fucking difference does it make if you have a +10 restfullness bed or 100 charisma points or whatever the hell the stats are. There's absolutely no point, just pleasure and experience from it.

The idea that we are all cells inside a global organism occurred to me in my early trips as well...seems to be a common theme that emerges out of psychedelic usage.

The fall from god into a state of sin would be us being disconnected from the gaian mind, resulting in the emergence of an isolated ego. All the religious practices (prayer, meditation, yada yada) as well as psychedelics are ways for us, as disconnected cells, to re-uplink with the overmind we are embedded in.

This is where my mind naturally went after taking LSD and mushrooms a lot.

Your logic is flawed.

The entire line of thought is doomed to a negative conclusion due to the lack of any kind of internal cohesiveness. It's a contradiction to imply both the need to view things from a broader perspective, and a lack of meaning as the result. If there is no meaning to life, then there is no need for me to look beyond my own place in the world, in which case I only need to look at the lives of the people around me for all the meaning I could ever need.

Agreed. But even when viewing things from a broader perspective, there's no answer or purpose (it would seem) either. Kind of like the repeating fractal theory where no matter what your viewing perspective, there's reminants of the same overall concept.

Everything else man has created has had a purpose. Vehicles to get to point a to point b, pets to keep us company, mail to move letters back and forth, etc. But when we ask ourselves what's our pupose we don't appear to have any. It seems like we're merely a novelty.

That is an accurate portrayal of events. I've said that to so many people that live by faith. Why would a being, an entity, that could BREATHE the very cosmos into existence need insignificant little ape-man to massage his ego? To pray to him and thank him for the very air we breathe? I never asked to be here and if given the choice I think I would pass on existence. Life is hard and mostly unrewarding.

I was browsing info about Terence because my cousin shared a quote on  Facebook. I felt the push to reply to you all on my own personal testimony. I was raised in church (Baptist). The preacher seemed to always be pushing how we should dress, act, live and it just seemed strict and like what's the point in God giving us all these rules all this strictness  (If that's a word haha) I thought I got saved at a young age and I worried if I really was then I got baptised wondering if i really ever got saved. My family eventually fell out of Church and I was still worried so as the years went by I eventually broke down on my knees and accepted Jesus in my life.  I was 14. I kept looking for this feeling but... nothing. I started to"use" God as a get out of jail free card! Id sin and ask for forgiveness and thought it was alright eventually in highschool I was smoking a lot of weed and when i was a senior did LSD  (2 hits) I was peaking for around 2 hours and it was intense I tell you. I had a bad trip and didn't want to "do that anymore" but after a couple more years I started sneaking out after hours without telling my girlfriend and smoking weed and playing N64 with some friends and over the summer took another 2 hits of acid and it was a better trip but eventually I was buying an oz of week every 3 weeks or so would sell a little here and there and I was getting so caught up in time how my time was running out how I wanted to go back and I always thought of myself as a deep thinker.  Always trying to figure things out.  Why we are here? How we are here? What am I supposed do here? What's the reason on being self aware? Why are the animals all here? What's the point of this species being alive if in the eyes of eternity we would be gone in a blink of an eye?? The thought of having no point to life. Where however we "feel" reigns supreme! Where the truth and morals we hold on to is for what reason? Why would I feel sad if someone murdered my family and the murderer might feel joy? What's right? What's wrong? What's up what's down? Time isn't real? I was going down these rabbit holes and at the time before I went back to that same Church I had roots in I was suffering with severe anxiety and fear I was sitting in my car on my way to work sobbing because I knew for a fact everyone around me was going to die for sure . If I were to accept that id have to accept it like it was tomorrow. I was just like why does this hurt? Why do we have to die? One day on my way home from work I cried out to God and I wanted to live my life for him! Because we have to die and if there is a whole truth I was going to follow it and help others see it like I did! So i went to Church and you know what the message was on? Anxiety and fear. I was ready to follow God. You see Gods always ready for us to seek him everyone of us is blue printed with that desire to know what we are here for to follow that Almighty Deity ! It sad to see the Christian community act like hypocrites and to act like they can judge. To know the kjv bible as the truth and to have an actual relationship with God where he answers my prayers when they are sincere and in his will . God didn't create us because he was bored or needed someone to worship him. The whole purpose is for us to have a relationship with him. You see our human minds cannot fully comprehend Gods eternal knowledge you see God is not held down by our universe or space time continuum. He sits outside and can see the whole timeline of our lives as humans and it was our destiny if you wanna call it that to be created and to be alive and God loves us and when he created us he knew we would fall short but because we fell short we are able to see our wrong doing and want to be saved by him because he loves us and for us to love him and hold onto him gives us that relationship with him that we were designed to have . I just thought I'd share that with you guys because I felt the need I don't know if it will help you guys but I know Gods relationship helps me and I know if you guys accept him he will help you too. I know the rabbit hole I went down and I know the freedom God gives me . Just make the right choice because it's not God choosing to damn us it's us choosing to damn ourselves! Until next time ...God Bless! P.S now I'm getting married to the love of my life and we are closing on a house soon! P.S.S I realise how old this thread is haha

Terence said he would lead the charge against organized religion but also loves some of the stories told in the bible such as the story of Doubting Thomas. He obviously didnt believe in some old grey bearded man in the sky but he did believe in some sort of intelligence that is above ours. Sometimes he calls it God. So what?

Terence admits many times that he and nobody else knows what is going on, in the end. But from his psychedelic experiences, he concludes that there probably is some sort of "God"

He talks about an "attractor" that Alfred Russell Wallace(Co-founder of evolution) and himself believed. This separates them both from Darwin. Terence and Alfred Russell Wallace believed we are being pulled toward "an end state" which he calls "the transcendental object at the end of time" which is a golden starship that literally can do anything. Terence says "if you are hungry, you can eat it. If you are dirty, you can shower under it. If you are thirsty, you can drink it" basically saying it is ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE. I saw this thing first hand before i even knew about Terence. This is what got me into his work so much.

Something there is mysteriously formed,
Existing before Heaven and Earth,
Silent, still, standing alone, unchanging,
All-pervading, unfailing,
I do not know its name; I call it tao.
If forced to give it a name, I call it
Great (ta). Being great, it flows out;
Flowing out means far-reaching;
Being far-reaching, it is said to return.

It's just a shot away..
