I realize you're one of those "DURRR, PUTIN!!!" guys who doesn't care about facts, so there's no point in arguing unless you have proof you'd like to present besides your own imagination.

Everyone knows Putin controls most everything in Russia.  Just because a law was written in his term as pm, doesn't mean what you think it does.

Putin still ran the show as pm.  That is accepted.

You ignore facts.

You really think Putin is going to be your special friend.  That he will behave when he's historically not that guy.

I'm not a subject of russian propaganda anymore than I have watched RT news.  That's why.

Russia is a large nation.  Every nation is dangerous.  Large nations more so.  Putin is of certain authoritarian character, as is expected of kgb and russian leadership.

Things are not going in peaceful directions.

Well America is my tribe and I believe that I gotta live here.  It's not good for me to see the situation get worse.

I don't think Putin or Russian intelligence is going to be looki out for my or the nations best interest.  They are pursing their own interest and even there it may not be their best interest.

Come on dude: there was a guy who posted a while back who lives in Russia and his assessment of the situation didn't paint a rosy picture of Putin like you do, and you accused him of being manipulated by foreign media.

What do you mean "paint a rosy picture of Putin"?  I'm simply dispelling the obvious lies.  In this case the Russian elections being corrupt.

Just because I show why Russian elections are no more corrupt than our own doesn't mean I think Putin is a great guy (I'm pretty neutral on Putin).  I'm just dispelling some of the "DURRR, PUTIN!!!" myths.

Whether the election is corrupt isn't the issue. The electoral process is a sham. Putin does not allow serious competitors to run. He has been running Russia for 18 years without any serious opposition, because anyone who is a real threat is eliminated in one way or another.

I've explained this about a dozen times.  These people weren't serious opposition candidates, as you like to make believe.  I'm open to a serious discussion about this if you disagree, but so far I've gotten nothing more than "DURRR, PUTIN!!!"

The serious ones never make it on the ballot. They either end up in jail, or made ineligible or they get shot dead. Or they never run to avoid these fates.

in the last six months i've talked to ten russian nationals that work at two embassy properties in DC, plus a man who has been here for about a dozen years who holds dual citizenship, about trump, elections, prospects for war, the ukraine, propaganda in both our countries, etc.  the one with dual citizenship is our contact, a contractor, that gets us work at the embassy properties.

all but one agrees that the russian elections are legit and of those they all think they're more legit than our elections.  the one that disagrees about the legitimacy of the russian elections says a lot of stuff that sounds really conspiracy theorist-y.  but the majority believe--while admitting there is no proof--that any candidate of consequence can never gain traction due to various reasons, some of which sound more legit than others.

none of them think of putin as a dictator but at least a few think he has dictatorial aspirations.  they all think of him as the legit president, whether they like him or not, and about half of them think a change of leadership would be good if only to get some fresh blood in leadership, without citing anything specific that they'd like to see changed except the rampant corruption and crony capitalism...according to them it's all about who you or your family knows.

they all say that putin has a great following in mother russia and that putin is generally held in very high regard there so it seems the polls we've seen showing more than 70% support are true, but a portion of his support is due to propaganda that is said to be rampant.  the worst of the propaganda is that the US has a plan in place to invade russia and is close to doing so on three fronts: the EU, over the arctic, and from alaska...according to the story being sold to commoners in russia, the only thing stopping the US from doing so is the power that  putin projects.  having said that, they all think putin has done good to great things for russia and have no reservations about him being president for another term.  one of them even thinks that putin should abolish term limits and become pres for life (lol).

and, they allll love, love, love living in the US.  they only wish they had more freedom to explore all that america has to offer (they all want to go fishing more and they're not free to do so...IDK what their fascination with fishing is, but that's what they said).  i mentioned here one time that one of them showed up at our shop one afternoon and said he was risking is life (no joke) by going 'off grid/awol' by stopping by our shop to visit for a while.  he had taken the battery out of his cell phone and bought a burner phone so that he could call and get directions because they track his movements through his phone.

it more than freaked me out and it did him as well.  he dared only stay for about 15 mins before he split so that he could get back near the highway and put the battery back into his official phone so that it wouldn't show the detour he made.  our shop is very near to quantico marine corp base so that made it even more sketchy.  i've found every one of them to be really good peeps...all except the guards in the towers on the embassy property that point AK's at you ever time we show up to work on their security gates and systems lol.

small sample size and all that, but that's been my experience FWIW.

oh, and they all had hearty laughs that trump is our president.  they think the americans that elected him are a fuckin joke.  and they think that all the talk of hillary wanting war with russia is an even bigger joke.  "what, the people think she send nuclear missile to invade?".  we had a good laugh about that.

Are Russian diplomats still limited to stay within 25 miles of DC

Edit: looked it up and they are

Small sample size and also people who are working in DC because Putin hired them to work in DC.

Next time ask them about the tunnel the FBI dug under the embassy back in the 80s

Relic. There's a good ovoid spot not far from the Wisconsin avenue embassy site. Only 3 or 4 blocks away.

and yes, i'll ask about the tunnel.  i was ignorant about it until you just mentioned it.

this guy was on an official trip from the williamsburg area (he wouldn't say where or why for our "safety") back to DC and stopped off on the way.  i'm not sure how that jives with the 25 mile rule.

That's for unrestricted travel. Essentially it covers free reign to live and travel in the metro area but requires permission to leave the area. I imagine getting permission is a formality.

Interesting post.  I always like to hear different perspectives from people who actually know Russia.

The US has aggressively been pushing our bases closer and closer to the Russian border, and we nearly snatched their only warm water base in Sevastopol after supporting an illegal coup in Ukraine to install a corrupt US friendly President.  Makes me think they had a reason for thinking that.  :shrug:

meh, i'm not so sure there was good reason to think we were physically going to invade.  there is no doubt we were/are limiting their avenues for projecting power, but invade russia? 

that just seems so damn far fetched, man.  hardly fathomable at all (to me).  i guess i've seen things almost as far fetched happen in my lifetime, but that one is a doozy.
