The Democratic Socialists of America * 9

want you!

Home page

Following Bernie's upstart 2015/16 campaign, the decades old DSA has seen a resurgence in membership, going from 5,000 members to close to 40,000 today.

I would urge all my lefty comrades on ths shroomery to check them out, and consider joining. Theres a local chapter in most major cities, and you can go to a meeting and spectate without joining if youre skeptical. As I'm sure most of you who are still reading this can agree, we cannot rely on the Democratic party establishment to foment real change in this country, and DSA members are being elected to local office all over the country (15 this past week alone).

I'll continue bumping this thread with DSA updates, member campaigns and elections, and just news in general.

Voice any and all questions regarding DSA here, and I'll do my best to answer them.

Solidarity!

Personally, I don't believe in revolution through reform and representation, but I'm happy to hear about the growth the DSA has been experiencing.

Solidarity from an anarchist compañerx.  :punker:

I lean a little bit more towards direct action myself, but this is a nice middle ground to build support with those disenchanted with US politics, but arent too radical.

At the very least, the DSA can be a cudgel to push the Dems (towards the actual) left.

Yeah, and I think the situation in the USA is very different from Canada (especially in the remote northern areas I make my home). Ottawa is far far far away and many people up here are already fairly self-sufficient. The long claw of the state hasn't locked it's grip up here yet, and the system doesn't appear so monolithic or oppressive. Living indigenous traditions (particularly the potlatch culture) also still exist up here, showing people an alternative to capitalism.

Solidarity, mutual aid, and direct action are community features in my hood. I blame it on the eight month long winter.

Hahaha, I'll take -42c over 42c any day. Also, aurora borealis.

Although, with climate change who knows what the future holds. Last winter the Yukon river didn't really freeze properly, which cause some havoc for the folks living in West Dawson who depend on the ice bridge in winter. We'll see how this year goes - maybe we'll be the California of the future once old California is a drought-ravaged desert sinking into the ocean.

get real. indigenous peoples potlatch a replacement for capitalism...good fucking christ.

indigenous people are conservative/traditionalist/segregationist, when it comes down to their lives, or yours, they'd rather you stay out.

I'm in Florida and its 86F here. Not a fan. I'd move back to Chicago in a heartbeat if I could force my friends and family to come with.

It's a sunny 70F here.  We're forecasted to have greater than average rainfall and mountain snow again this year.  Maybe climate change is gonna be a good deal for Ca, and the parking lot states will dry out instead.
Climate change could make California wetter, study finds

BTW, in case you are unfamiliar with the potlatch (not to be confused with potluck), it was the main economic system based in the pacific north-west and the adjoining interior and subartic territories.

Although the pacific indigenous cultures weren't free of fault (for example, many of them practiced slavery), the potlatch system is a shining example of a gift economy - and judging from how fiercely the Canadian government opposed this system (banned until 1951), one can probably infer the threat to colonial capitalism that the potlatch was rightfully thought to present.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potlatch
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potlatch_ban

"the Potlatch was a great institution. It encouraged people to give away their earnings and possessions (including slaves) in exchange, the giver would receive a great deal of respect and be seen as honourable to his tribe and others"

I've been with the Green Party for the last 15 years, and they have an even larger membership.  I'm curious to see where the two differ.  I'll try to read up on it tonight to see if I can find any major differences.

I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them.  I also attack my side if I think they're wrong.  People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.
