SSRI's, MAOI's and MDMA

I have heard mixed opinions on the different combinations of these drugs.
as far as I understand combing MDMA and an MAOI should be avoided as it can lead to serotonin syndrome.

I have also heard some people say that mixing MDMA and an SSRI should be avoided because of the same reason whereas others say there is no risk with this combo.

Can someone who fully understands the interactions between these drugs explain what's what?

Yeah, it's absolutely not safe. To be completely and utterly avoided. Especially with MAOIs. For some it may not be a problem but for others it could be devastating. Many people have died with these combos.
In either case if you are on SSRIs it will greatly diminish the roll, but yes either could lead to serotonin syndrome. Symptoms could range from no noticeable effects, to seizures, to death.. so not worth the risk.
While taking MDMA while on SSRIs probably won't kill you.. you won't feel anything and then you'll probably be depressed as fuck. MAOIs and MDMA absolutely do not ever. Some drugs you should just never mix.

Good to know, I'm not on either but have just been wondering about it. I have seen several times on the shroomery people claiming that combining MDMA and an SSRI is safe and that it's MDMA and an MAOI which is the dangerous combo.

This never made sense to me though as I always thought how can combining a drug that limits reabsorption of serotonin and a drug that produces huge amounts of it possibly be safe to combine.

Do either of you know how combining the two diminishes a roll though? You would think that with even more serotonin in your system it should increase a roll. However I'm sure there is alot more going on with these drugs that I don't understand but just curious as to why it has that affect and can lead to serotonin syndrome.

Serotonin Selective Re-uptake Inhibitors - they work by increasing the amount of inter-cellular serotonin. They do so by inhibiting cellular absorption of serotonin - it is this inhibition that causes you to have way less of an effect after taking MDMA. Normally, MDMA would increase serotonin levels without inhibiting reuptake.

Thanks for the info but still a little confused.
As far as I understood as well as MDMA increasing serotonin it also slowed reuptake somewhat as well.


And as for SSRI's, I understand they inhibit reuptake of serotonin essentially allowing the serotonin to 'hang around' for a longer period of time but doesn't the brain continue to release serotonin neurotransmitters whilst the absorption of it is being slowed? If so how is it this serotonin is able to be used but excess serotonin being produced because of MDMA use has no effect?

I'm sure I am misunderstanding something but I hope my question  makes some sort of sense?

Yes, the brain is continuing to release serotonin...but free serotonin doesn't do very much (anything, really). It is the absorption of free serotonin into brain cells that causes the effects :wink:
