Stick your toes in and see how it feels
    #24664103 -

Hi.
There are seemingly innumerable mycology related websites and forums available to peruse on the internet. I haven't used this incredible technology in at least 15 years. It seems to me, however, that the greatest wealth of information concerning the topic resides on message boards, with this one showing up more often than any of the others as a result in a Google search.

The thing is, though, that through the anonymity and ubiquity of the internet, these message boards have become vitriolic, maybe similarly to the rest of the world. Maybe it's simply my perspective, or maybe its always been like this. Even here at shroomery.org, I have seen responses to questions that are just utterly useless and abusive; many of these responses have been made by moderators here, which makes me even more hesitant to ask for information or share my experiences here.

I am currently dealing with long term depression that lets up for a few months at a time here and there. I'm in the depths of it. Two days ago, my mother told me to "get over it" and my wife wasn't sure if I'd be alive when she returned from work. Obviously I'm still here. I'm sensitive, and I don't need to be abused on the internet. I had a successful grow last year, and the experience helped my well-being. I live in an arid climate and have been having some troubles since spring when it started getting hot out. I have some questions and would like to participate in constructive discussion.

The main question I want to ask is regarding experiences using these boards. How is the current community? Does anyone find themselves being abused for being who they are?

Thank you.

Great first post man, and a very good question. I think that as long as you choose carefully which subforums you post in, you'll fit in just fine here. IMO, you give off the kinda good vibes that would make you a perfect fit in the community.

Let me tell you first that this community means everything to me, in terms of my online life at least (which is quite a substantial part of my life as it is for many these days). I don't do any other kind of social media, for I have everything I need here. I've met at least a dozen people from the boards IRL and it's been absolutely wonderful every time. I've met some of the most beautiful and kind hearted people I've ever known due to these boards. This place has seen me through ups and downs, highs and lows, and it's been a rock for me when I've needed it.

So yeah, I think you can get my passion and enthusiasm from that.

As for the subforums to stick to, obviously the ones that concern mycology at a granular level will need to be visited if you're attempting a grow. They can be quite busy but the mods there do the best they can; after all, us staff members are just people too. I don't visit them much as haven't grown in years so I can't say an awful lot more about them.

Personally, I tend to frequent Philosophy, Sociology & Psychology + Sexuality & Relationships + the subforum we're in now. The Pub, which is the hub of the community, can be a lot of fun too at almost any time of day, but there are definitely trolls that lurk there so I'd advise you to steer clear if you're feeling particularly sensitive at any given time. Definitely steer clear of any 'User Created' forums as they do not have rules and can be very, very harsh to be exposed to.

But all in all, I really think you've found an amazing community to be a part of here, and I highly advise you to become active in it. Someone here will have answers to pretty much anything you could ever need to know.

Hope to see you around brother!!

MOD EDIT: No Flaming.

Seems the actual mushroom forums do ok.  Chem forum not so much and stay clear from politics subforum and sometimes the pub is under political attack.

I also have a hear time with the climate being hot and the days long.  But with intense fear that somehow I hide well.

Thank you for your response. It was incredibly helpful and lifted a great weight from my shoulders. My eyes are welling up slightly from your kindness and my head feels lighter.

I'm going to be combing some old posts in the mycology forums, where my interest mainly lies, to see if I'm able to locate anyone with similar outdoor humidity levels. For example, my outdoor humidity is currently 16%, indoor humidity is between 30-40%, and I just cannot get a shotgun fruiting chamber to maintain a humidity above 80% according to an Accu-Rite digital thermometer or two other cheap hygrometers. I understand that this isn't the appropriate subforum for this, but you've comforted me, and maybe someone else who comes across this will have had similar experiences.

Thanks again.

Ah man, that's the good shit right there. I know that feeling well, and I am honoured that my words brought it to you. You seem like a beautiful soul and I hope you hang around in the community sub's so I can see you there. TBH, after learning what I needed to TEK wise without posting, I didn't venture out of PS&P for years, but I'm really glad I eventually did.

The search function is pretty good, and if you get stuck feel free to PM me and I'll hook you up with some of the guys out there that are in the know.

Lots of love brother!!!
