...And it's in the form of an enormous pinwheel of Air and Water with the force of H-bombs. I am trying to BE HERE NOW without my mind leaping from one terrible possibility to another, but by late tomorrow night or into the wee hours of Sunday this mammoth Hurricane Irma (I've always disliked that name, reminds me of irk, irksome, whatever) will be making landfall on the tip of the penile peninsula of the USA that I live on, Florida. Almost certainly I will be without electricity, along with many thousands of others. The heat index was 120°F. yesterday. In Miami, air conditioning is not a luxury during spring and summer, it is life-support, no lie.

Clearly, I will not be browsing or responding for an unknown period of time. I do not often post, but the collective consciousness of panic is palpable and I feel like sharing. We've had hurricanes and hurricane scares since Andrew in 1992, but I've never seen or talked with people who were getting the shits, nausea, and other fear-based symptoms. Many fled when they could and have not gone far enough because Miami may be spared the eye of the storm which is GREAT for me, but those who fled to Orlando are in for a sad surprise. I did start the generator today, which I start on a yearly basis but haven't used since Hurricane Wilma in 2005. I will run the fridge for 2 hour shifts, and that will keep it cold for a good 10 hours. Then I'll go out and start it again. During those shifts, we'll recharge our phones, small radio, and turn on a box fan, but it's unlikely we'll use computers or TV.

I managed to obtain 15 gallons of gasoline, should've filled that fourth container. The gas stations around me had refill tanker trucks of gas and a short time later they were empty again. There is no fuel to be had now until after this monster passes. We couldn't get out even if we wanted, but I have to stay to take evasive action. The alarm system's battery will fail after 2-3 days and there are looter assholes, so I have to stay. IF the eye misses us and the storm takes a more Northwesterly route, we may escape the tornados that spin off (during Wilma one touched down 2 houses away, probably an EF 1, and it snapped off several concrete power poles), and the cyclonic force of the inner wall of the eye. A week without electricity and I was getting drunk just to sleep. I woke up with my face on the sharp aluminum screen door track and the screen door open on one occasion. I cannot sleep in the bed. If it wasn't for the Distemper and Hydrophobic fucking raccoons, I'd try to sleep outside. Try sleeping in a steam-room.

It's becoming windier outside now. After Wilma in 2006 I bought Miami-Dade County approved accordion shutters for the whole house (3 sliding glass doors, cabana bathroom door, 10 large windows) and recently had to get panels for a side and front door since accordions became prohibitively expensive). In 2010 I spent twice the amount I paid for shutters on a new roof with Dimension® shingles rated at 135 mph. Category 5 hurricanes begin at 157 mph. If the eye stays away, we might experience a Cat 4 or if lucky, the effects of a Cat 3. This storm is many times larger than Andrew which I lived through, but South Florida's Homestead area looked like Nagasaki. Houses were leveled, street signs vanished, people, dogs, cats, and horses were killed, marriages failed left and right (including mine)!

Yes Shroomerites, an evil wind is coming this way. Consider this a type of trip report, where I am utilizing the wisdom that I have sought for overcoming the very real fear of catastrophe and potential death, and I'm simply sitting here typing to you, listening to a 1990 Grateful Dead show at Nassau Coliseum, enjoying the wonderful air conditioning while it lasts and soon the last decent night's sleep for a while.
