I have been going all over town. There are some areas of town where it is really, really bad, and there are some areas of town where the flooding completely drained out the day after the rained stopped, and it never got into any homes or businesses in the first place. It is the worst on the far east side of town and east of Houston, and out I-10 west near the Addicks resevoir right now. Inside of the loop 610 there isn't much flooding left at all. But of course, people are still busy clearing all of the damaged stuff out of their houses. Many of the houses in my own neighborhood, only 5 blocks down from me, seem to have gotten 3-4 feet of water, just because they were closer to the bayou. But none got into my apartment or my parents house

That's good to hear, sounded like you were pretty certain that they were going to be flooded.

And yeah the "bad spots" are pretty much just peppered all over the place.. Parts of my city are (probably) still under water but for the most part, seems like my streets are dry.. There isn't a single drop in the street in front of my house right now. My city received the highest (last time I checked) rainfall of the entire area even lol.

Last I checked, it was at 20.

Well fuck.. https://www.axios.com/harvey-weakens-to-tropical-depression-as-death-toll-rises-to-38-2479897590.html

Quote:
What began as a Category 4 Hurricane has now weakened to a tropical depression, and the region that was pounded with heavy rain for six straight days is finally beginning to survey the damage that some experts say will cost more than Katrina and Sandy combined to repair.

The remnants of the hurricane, which has killed at least 38 people, began traveling up the Mississippi Delta this morning. Although it appears the worst is over for Texas, many areas remain underwater and tens of thousands of people are still seeking refuge in overflowing shelters.

I was listening to NPR this afternoon and they were talking about the Galveston storm in the early 1900's.

Something like 8000 people died. They had zero warning and the whole city was under water. No one even knew about it for days to come and help.

Yeah my wife was reading that to me last night. It was a quiz or something and she wanted to see if I could guess what the most devastating loss of life in this area was, I asked for a time frame and she said around the 1900's so I assumed it was when those ships exploded in Texas city shortly after WWII.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_City_disaster

Quote:
The Texas City disaster was an industrial accident that occurred April 16, 1947, in the Port of Texas City. It was the deadliest industrial accident in U.S. history, and one of the largest non-nuclear explosions. Originating with a mid-morning fire on board the French-registered vessel SS Grandcamp (docked in the port), her cargo of approximately 2,200 tons (approximately 2,100 metric tons) of ammonium nitrate detonated,[1] with the initial blast and subsequent chain-reaction of further fires and explosions in other ships and nearby oil-storage facilities. It killed at least 581 people, including all but one member of the Texas City fire department.[2] The disaster triggered the first ever class action lawsuit against the United States government, under the then-recently enacted Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA), on behalf of 8,485 victims.

I know my history well, especially anything to do with WWII.

EDIT: anyways, apparently they said there was no way a cyclone could ever harm the city.. loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool.... Jesus fucking christ.. That has got to be the most devastating assumption in human history. At least they learned from it.. They went back two years later and built I think like 17 foot tall storm breaker walls or whatever..

Galveston advised before Harvey hit that they were ready for it and not worried about any sort of evacuations.  The official who said that seemed really confident that they had properly prepared for whatever the storm may bring.  I think he was right because I haven't heard about anything bad there yet

Stopped raining yesterday, but there are issues with more flooding in some parts because of releasing the reservoir. Hwy6 and gessner are totally under water cause of this and it's on the interstate too

Here's one of the neighborhoods uneed water at the edge of barker resivor as of yesterday. Wanted to kayak it, but did get the chance

What happens if Irma reaches the coasts? It's now the biggest hurricane ever and could wipe out entire cities with it's wind alone.

If Irma reaches the Gulf Coast, especially the Texas portion of it, we're so far beyond fucked I can't even really imagine the scenes it will leave behind. That's assuming it keeps strengthening, they're saying it could reach Cat 6 by the time it makes landfall. I'm most likely leaving.. Even with the majority of the water gone and clean up already underway, everything is stretched so thin now it will be absolutely devastating. Harvey already started opening up sink holes and threatened to wipe away entire sections of major freeways/highways (like I-10)..

Damage won't stop there, either.. I can easily imagine it putting plants like Exxon plant near my house completely out of operation for years. Pictures don't do justice to a place like that, I've seen them first hand when I was working NDT doing testing on their equipment and telling them what needs to be replaced and what is still good.. the machinery and everything in those places is massive and are not easy or cheap to replace. Just the heat exchangers (the things I was testing) probably costs 10's of thousands if not hundreds and all they are is just a bunch of metal pipes wrapped together to form a bundle.. They range in size of anywhere from 10 feet long and just a couple dozen tubes to 40 feet+ and 1,000+ tubes.

With those plants down, the entire American economy is at risk because they provide the materials for all the things we rely the most heavily on to survive (plastics, electronics, and medicine). Of course there are other sources for all of them but we'd lose a good chunk of our production.

Sorry to hear about the benz withdrawal, homie. So if you had to guess -- how much of Houston is back up and operating from a work perspective?

I'm not really sure, I don't go to Houston really, even the outskirts are still about half an hour from me. If it's like my city though, it's pretty much up and running in limited capacity.. Most of our stores are starting to open but they are only open for like half the day.

Not yet, 100 years ago there wasn't a Cat 1. All that is, is a description of wind speed and Cat 5 is far from the strongest that is possible to obtain, even on Earth. Under the right conditions it can go much higher than Cat 5. It stopped at Cat 5 pretty much because there wasn't a need for anything higher up to that point. But if we start getting significantly higher than 157, we will need to add updated Categories. A Category 2 storm has nothing on a category 4, just like a category 5 would have nothing on a category 6-7. The system was invented so we can be better prepared for the amount of damage that is likely to happen and what not.

You obviously aren't listening

He is talking in hypotheticals. If we hypothetically had a hurricane 50X more powerful and devastating than Harvey, it should and likely would be classified as a 6(being the first of its kind).  It could happen one day.
