I really hope taxpayers don't have to bail out the 85% of the people in that area who do not have flood insurance. Buy flood insurance if you live in a flood zone, ffs.

I'm fine with bailing the people out. That should be the governments primary job the people not giant corporations or helping rich people.

What about personal responsibility? These aren't poor people. They own homes and now we are supposed to replace them because they wanted to save money. Fuck that shit.

Just to be clear, I'm talking specifically about giving home owners money to cover voluntary uninsured losses.

No one can predict what will happen a safety net is important. I think we should have universal healthcare for the same reason.

That's what insurance is for. People didn't take out insurance because they wanted to save money. Now they want the government to pay.

You don't need to buy a house in a flood zone. It's not like scientists haven't been warning about the susceptibility of this kind of event in Houston. The New York Times did a whole series about this kind of thing last year.

This has been one  of the most predicted natural disasters and only 17% of residents have flood insurance. WTF is wrong with people?

Houston is the fourth-largest city in the country. It's home to the nation's largest refining and petrochemical complex, where billions of gallons of oil and dangerous chemicals are stored. And it's a sitting duck for the next big hurricane. Learn why Texas isn't ready.

That's a stupid thing to debate right now, here, when people are still in danger. Worry about the financial repercussions later.

No actually it's the exact time to talk about this kind of shit. In two weeks nobody will find it relevant.

Why do people always say shit like that? Something bad happens and therefore it's a bad time to talk about why.

Well for one thing maybe someone will think about this and decide to buy insurance because they are at risk.

I think we should bail out the hillbilly states when they flood, on a few conditions.

1) They have to publicly acknowledge that Ca is a donor state that pays for them to keep existing.

2) They have rebuild further away from major watercourses, and no new construction can start before ground is broken on realistic flood control projects

3) The money should be a loan to the various state governments

No.  It is too late for that.  Binding restrictions for that entire area and the surrounding.

That's a worthy enough point. But that wasn't your angle at all.

Actually the water level is a few meters below where they are. Its a bit of a crisis but I'm sure they'll know what to do, one of them is trained for disaster scenarios

That's a bummer, and I hope they're ok.
It all the more reason to stop building in the same places that get flooded out every 5 years.  I'm not just talking about this hurricane, I'm talking about all along the tennesee, missouri, and mississippi rivers.  Instead of bailing out the entire south ad infinitum, maybe we should incentivize the kind of flood control measures we were smart enough to implement on the best coast 100 years ago.

Well actually it isn't this is slated to be one of the most expensive natural disasters even worse than Katrina. Wondering how the clean up is going to go is worth speculating about.
