Hydrogen bomb almost certainly doesn't mean thermonuclear charge, in this case.  It means that they used a fusion reaction to make the fission reaction more violent, which isn't really anything new.

The bomb was too big for it to be a simple boosted fission weapon...but wasn't really big enough to be a true thermonuclear bomb. We'll probably never know :frown:

If they are correct with 8x Hiroshima we are talkig a yield in the 100-200kT range and that DOES sound like a hydrogen bomb that fizzled.

Fusion augmnted fission generally cuts off at 80-100 kT.

Congratulation NK if you pulled off a Teller-Ulam or even a Sloika on your 6th try because that would be a seriously steep learning curve but holy crap, the world is in trouble.

A hydrogen bomb is not just bad news because of higher yield, but because it opens the door to genuine "citybusters", neutron bombs and advanced radiation weapons, ie "dirty" bombs.

I have a buddy who adamantly thinks that nuclear weapons are a lie perpetrated by the government (Illuminati) to keep the people docile. For all we know this is fake news.

On the other hand, I can't bring up world issues or anything remotely political with him without him giving me a lecture on how the Earth is flat and trying to get me to watch 3 hour long YouTube videos on the subject.
