So parts of Houston do flood quite often and pretty severely at times. Alot of people probably don't have insurance because the premiums are probably relatively expensive.

I'd think it's still probably worth it but I'm saying this thousands of miles away and right after a devastating flood so... hindsight shit. If I just randomly moved to Houston before this I probably wouldn't even think about it. Hurricanes don't directly impact that area all that often.

Flood insurance on my parents' house would be 3500 a year. That is an enormous expense.

If you live in a 50 year flood zone and your house is worth $150,000 then that amount seems perfectly reasonable.

all the rain stimulates feeding activity because of bugs and rodents and shit that get washed away.  also, the fish are escaping the deeper channels and moving into shallow water where they are more fun to catch.  In addition, there's potential for in-shore saltwater fish to move inland with any storm surge, so there might be opportunities to catch a large variety if you can find a safe spot in the brackish water.

Lord have mercy. The guys claiming "no one asked us". OK to be fair I'd want FEMA and city and state officials guaranteed to be there. But as a structure that these people have paid for themselves, you'd figure the local church be the first place people go, since realistically these people paid to have the thing built. Should be rightfully theirs in a worst case. Some churches here operate 24/7 food and assistance. Maybe our people pay God more I don't know. But I do agree, it's not as if a game plan was discussed with the owner by the National Guard or governor or something. FEMA maybe?

People forget that girls got raped and bodies found in freezers during Katrina. I don't fault the guy for not wanting it to go down like that, in any capacity. But what about the volunteers? Not just people but medical, and those already on assisted living will be dragged by their families. People will be injured and stink and bleeding. Cold or starving, maybe sick from bad water.

Texas has tornadoes and scorpions and gets tropical storms. They should be prepared for this kind of thing.

What do we pay FEMA for? They can't figure out a huge structure with 20k capacity and 10 foot flood gates is a perfect go-to. Why wasn't it the first place to go?

They're idiots lol.. The only people that seem to learn from Hurricanes are the ones who are the most effected by them.. I know what the fuck to do and I know the drill.. Because I've been through so many and this is the first one I haven't suffered through from basically the first day.. Usually by now I would be sick and worn out because it's too hot to sleep and shit.. The only damn reason this one caught me by surprise is because I hadn't been watching the weather this week (I generally do, but I've been busy with other stuff) and this shit basically became a threat overnight and just before it was about to hit us. Even getting caught by surprise, I was ready to get through this thing pretty much that same day.

I wouldn't expect much to change the next time a huge storm like this rolls around either.. We can't rely on the government and shit to protect us or get us prepared for something like this. This is something we all have to do on our own.. The Government has proven again and again it will get people killed. I mean I know with something like this, death is going to happen regardless, and so far the majority have been (tragically) the dead person's fault (or at least not because of the Government's inaction) but still..

If you're sitting around waiting to be told what to do, things are not going to go well for you. It doesn't make you look brave or whatever to not get prepared or to run before the storm hits. It makes you fucking smart (to get prepared or leave I mean). You need to develop a plan before the storm is even here and you need to stick to the plan up until the point that it's literally not an option anymore.. If you decide to stay and weather the storm, then you fucking stay and weather the storm.. You don't decide to leave after the first day just because the rain stopped.

If you're there and able it's your responsibility to help. If you're an entity designed to protect the people it is your responsibility to help. I agree people have to be accountable for themselves but then... What the fuck do we pay these people for if they're not there when we need them the most?
