Someone has to pay it, someone will. America isn't going to let Houston be a wasteland. Not much more to talk about. I understand the point, I just don't think this is the place to debate it when all the prior pages have been about people who's family is in danger and many still are.

I'd be more interested though in asking how we're going to deal with this next time and to help prevent so much damage and how to more swiftly remove vulnerable people out of harms way. How to have rescue crews and first responders better prepared. Because there is going to be a next time.

Fair enough. I think with climate change coastal areas are going to be hit the hardest with changing weather patterns and an increase in storms. There is likely going to be more investment in flood protection as well as more people migrating inland.

Well actually it isn't this is slated to be one of the most expensive natural disasters even worse than Katrina. Wondering how the clean up is going to go is worth speculating about.

Wasn't Sandy worse, dollar wise, than Katrina? I know they were very close, near 100 billion. I think one was 80 billion and the other was 70 something.

Katrina was a bigger monster of a hurricane but Sandy was just on one of those freak paths. To hit NYC and Jersey as it did was very odd.

I think that's something we should start discussing too. Climate change is changing the areas these climates effect. Most of our large cities are ill prepared for things like this.

I really hope taxpayers don't have to bail out the 85% of the people in that area who do not have flood insurance. Buy flood insurance if you live in a flood zone, ffs.

Wouldn't that be the government's fault for not implementing a mandate for flood zone dwellers?

No.  It is too late for that.  Binding restrictions for that entire area and the surrounding.

Obviously not for this event.

I'm just astounded that in the second most flood prone city in the US, only 17% are insured for flooding.

The government has mandated that people receiving payments not rebuild in certain areas, like the flood plains of the Mississippi. And yes, you cannot get flood insurance for locations if you're in a a zone that floods too often.

Still here.. lol. Yeah a lot of people were being rescued in my town before I went to sleep. I also heard that less than a mile or so from my house they found two babies/children (yes, dead) just floating in the water.. Dunno if it was true or not, news wasn't reporting on it yet, it was people talking about it on one of the Facebook pages set up for our city..

Honestly, I'm beyond fucking shocked that we still have power.. My city is usually the first one to lose it.. Most of my city is old and trashed as fuck without the hurricane coming in.. Probably half the people that live in this city, only live here to support the refinery in some way or anther.. My grandpa used to work at a refinery and is why we lived here lol... I worked for them for awhile as well, and will be going back eventually.. Lot of people here are either an actual worker there or family of someone who is, so a lot of people are willing to live in ghettos and squalor and not worry about our city reinforcing our infrastructure.

Man that's horrible about the kids.

I've found most of those refinery towns are pretty messed up. All those industrial river cities are fairly nasty. Baton Rouge...etc... The people that I've run into just want to make some quick money there and get the hell away.

If every one had insurance for flooding would the insurance company's go bust ? then need a bail out from the government ?

It pretty much happened after earthquakes in my country,

sending positive vibes to all the peeps who have been effected by this

No one was covered for terrorism when 9/11 happened and it fucked some insurance companies up but they survived so generally no. With all the disasters that have happened insurance companies have implemented new methods to deal with them. For example my department backs up claims when severe storms like this hits the country so they're not overwhelmed.

We have maps that are set up specifically to show level of risk including risk of flood. If you are in a flood zone, say a particularly high flood zone, your premium will cost more than someone who doesn't live in a flood zone or lives in a low risk flood zone. So you will pay more monthly in order for your likely claim to already be paid by you and those around you.

That's exactly how insurance companies make profit. They charge premiums (your insurance bill) so that you will, in essence, will pay for the claim the company will pay you when something bad happens. If nothing bad happens and you need no claim then that money goes to paying other people's claims. Collectively the premiums of hundreds of thousands of people go to pay claims and to provide revenue to the company.

If there's more insurance then there's more premiums being paid. Not everyone, even everyone in the same flood zone that floods, will have a complete total claim when it does flood. So the premiums, if charged correctly, should cover all the claims.

The only way it wouldn't is if the company under-charges or if everyone in the entire country has their homes ruined all around the same year.

Might happen in the future as the climate continues to shift but seeing as that should be a somewhat gradual thing smart companies will gradually increase premiums with the chaos of mother nature. My company already charges nearly 50% more for flood coverage now vs 5-10 years ago in many parts of the country for this exact reason.

Can't get much more percise than that because I'm under contract not to discuss 'trade secrets' or whatever the fuck compliance calls it. Think you get the idea though.
