I couldn't agree more. I'm a guitar player but I appreciate excellent drumming, even if a band is just so-so I can listen to it if the drummer is good (Nirvana is to me a good example). On the other hand there are some tremendous guitar players that I can hardly listen to because the drummer backing them is so bad (certain Robin Trower albums come to mind).

I'm not a drummer, and I don't know anything technical about playing the drums, but I've always thought Danny Carey of Tool was a great drummer.

But it is sad that good drummers like Phil Collins helped to popularlize the mechanical, computerized drum sound in the '80s. With such pop giants as Hall & Oates adding to the sound ("I can't go for that.") Then such boring "drumming" was adopted by rap, hip-hop and trance and called music. And the programming is rarely even done well. It is highly repetitive with an occasional digital stutter or filter sweep to break up the monotony.

I love the drumming from the Big Band and Swing era with greats such as Gene Krupa to the powerhouse drumming of Led Zeppelin and other early hard rockers.

Today, it seems one has to lean mostly towards jazz to hear "real" drumming.

Many kids today would rather go to a club with DJ music than see a live band. The seeming demise of this art form among the general public is disturbing.

As a lone keyboardist who tried to program good rhythyms to accompany myself, I appreciate the difficult art of the "timekeeper."

Dude, you think the drummer from Mushroomhead is the best on the planet? Sure, you're opinion is your own, but there are alot of drummers that are way better then he is. To name a few: Chris Penie, Tomas Haake, Mike Portnoy, Josh Freese, Toney Laureano(one of the fastest motherfuckers I have ever heard) Danny Carey, Richard Christy, Dennis Chambers.....any of those blow that guy away.

It is all about the drums! :grin:

The drums are what hold it all together... I'm not a drummer but I've done a lot of work with programming drums in MIDI with my metal songs. The possibillites you can get going are astounding... progressions within progressions!  :laugh:

I mean, all these different cymbals with different sounds and then the fucking high to low toms for some great tribal pounding and then that snare that is just BAM! fucking power, and then those fucking killer bass drums which are just like low frequency emphasis! low frequency emphasis!  :nut:

Of the music I've been exposed to, it seems the more progressive bands that are capable of expressing a lot more musically all have had really good drummers who could do a lot of complex stuff. Neil Peart from Rush, Danny Carey from TOOL, I believe Michael Portney from Dream Theater (I haven't heard too much by them though).

When I think of music (especially when altered. :wink:) it tends to take on another dimension... which doesn't exactly exist but is implied by the interactions going on between everything... and the drums play a huge part in all of that. :grin:

Well, what it comes down to is rhythm and melody. The more capable each section is, the more range of possibillites exist, and the more evolved music can be made. :smirk:

Not that I'm working on a metal revolution or anything like that... oh no no.... *fades into the background* :evil:

Gene Hoglan was drummer for Death on two albums.. he's one of the best..he is currently touring with Opeth ...also Neil Peart.. Gene Krupa..
