it should be dark during the incubation period, because you don't want the mycelium to start making pins before the cake is covered AND if you have your jars right-side-up then the mushrooms will grow the wrong way. That is, if they are a phototropic variety.

Basically, it doesn't need light and light will just confuse the fungus more than it needs to be, leaving more chance for failure.

pf cakes usally dont want to pin untill there fully coloniozed unless they have staleld for a reason. I wouldnt worry about the light yet.

i like to put my jars into light when they are about 2/3 colonized...this way they either pin just before birthed..or right after. It cuts the wait for pins down alot.

I exposed my 12 jars to plenty of light during incubation. They did not pin until after full colonization.I used PF spore race.No problem!
