Eh, all I know is my former JROTC drill instructor said that duty, even in the reserves, is almost constant. And he made it sound like deployment drills were random. It may vary by unit though, he said they met up once a week at least to do group PT. He ended up doing 2 tours in Iraq.

The other reserves I talked to told me similar things. All young men though, and young men are prone to boasting. I wish I had kept in touch with some of them.

This is part of the problem the skill gap in the UK is huge, as you say they meet up on a weekend and your average squaddie (R) will do 2 days of exercise, usually eat wrong and have a real job in civi street. They spend less time doing soldiering than an actual soldier, so it makes them less effective.

An average regular will do PT monday, tuesday, sports Wednesday then PT Thursday and friday, before they even begin their working day.

I know Reservists, I have a few friends that are still active, and by their own admission, they were shocked at the level they are expected to perform when serving with a regular unit for a year (the time the government determines your service will last usually 6 months pre deployment training and 6 months active tour of duty in Afghan/Iraq).

Now i have met some beast reservists that can run a mile and half in rapid time and do the physical side of it too, but unfortunately they are few and far between in the UK.

Out of the entire Battery that were offered to go on Herrick20 only 2 guys actually put their hands up.

so you don't often get the cream of the crop, more you get these guys will do i guess.

Yeah I think that has alot to do with it. During war, or when acting as reinforcements for whatever occasion, training goes into double time for reserves. During down times I can see their training pale in comparison to active duty soldiers.

A full time civilian job is more or less designed to keep you busy throughout the week. Most civilians can barely make time for life working a regular job, a reserve that is keeping him or herself ready for duty at a moment's notice doesn't have free time. Being where I am I'm surrounded by military bases and associated militaristic operations so for a reserve soldier who wants to keep themselves in tip-top shape, mentally and physically, it's an ideal location. But even still, considering many are parents and do have full time jobs, even the resources available to them are often neglected. Do you want to be a soldier or do you want to be a parent? if it's the ladder then you can forget all the "optional" activities.


It also helps to join fresh out of high school. These days high schoolers rarely jump right into a full time job after graduating so they have extra time to go and support their units and bases and themselves. They're also much less likely to be a parent. So if I were in command and I had the option of making someone do extra curricular activities I'd definitely choose the kid that has nothing better to do rather than the parent that's trying to provide for their kid.

Every veteran I've worked with has been the biggest joke. Even ones who were air force and educated. despite being warriors they still, by order of magnitude, got out worked by stoner kids.

Well, lets look at this.  What scholarships did you turn down to join the military?  What was your GPA in high school?  SAT?  What universities accepted you?

that's irrelevant & your bias is showing. service to ones country is just as respectable as academic achievement, regardless of what you think about a persons ability to achieve academically or their motivations for joining the military.

I joined @ 17 because of my passion for high explosives. I ended up with my explosives handling license as well as my pyrotechnics license shortly after my enlistment now have a 4 year in Computer information systems degree. Sure there is a ton of shitbags in the military and yes most people join because it was one of their only options I'm not arguing that, but to claim all prior enlisted are sub par is like saying ALL black people "......." makes you look very ignorant

Well, in your case, you didn't have a lot of other options, right?  I didn't see any answers to my questions, but I did see a feeble attempt to try to deflect.

There are people who join the military despite having lots of options.  Those are the rare ones, though.

That's irrelevant.  The fact is that someone with a clear path to a successful civilian career is less likely to join the military.  Do you dispute this?  Most of the people who join don't have any other plan.

Not at all.  After high school, I fucked around for well over a decade.  I worked in theatre because it allowed me to stay immature and just have fun.  It wasn't until my 30's before I started to do anything of import.

This isn't about me vs. you, dude.  This is about objective facts.

I worked with a guy that came over from military IT. Something to do with payroll systems. He was hella sharp. Sharp enough to leave the company when they told him he needed to stop trying to improve the work procedures for the entire department instead of his own production work.

He said in the military they were still storing data on floppy disks :rofl: I can't blame him for expecting to be able to come to civilian work and expecting them to allow him to actually make shit suck less. He was actually helping me figure out how to keep my team from doing duplicate work, which happens often, before he left.

I'm still trying to address it but I'm not a database manager and the higher ups don't begin to understand it... All their proposed solutions have actually made the problem worse.


There's always someone higher than you that thinks they can do your job better than you so you should do things their way simply because they're higher than you for some reason or another.

sure, they may drive them, but that is not their job. same with shipping and receiving, we have civilians that do most of that work.  endothermic furnace operator? another contractor.
