I have all these drugged weapon tracks burned into my soul.  The guy in the video might know some secret training procedure.
I love watching older guys and girls.  This is a random silat video of an old guy.  I like tai chi a lot for older guys.  I'm 40 YO now!

You can't always run.  Why would you want to study MMA if you're just going to use Krav Maga in the fight?

Krav maga is for if they have a pistol bat or knife- armed combat. MMA is for unarmed combat. If you have both you are as well prepared as any e can be.

I think krav is good in the sense that it uses mostly easy to learn gross motor movements. As opposed to the fine motor movements of jiu jitsu, which take much longer to master, but develope into a higher level fighter.

Exactly right. The grappling aspect especially goes right over the head of anyone who hasn't trained themselves.

MMA is by far the most exciting sport and one of the most exciting spectacles period.

"Guess I should clarify, I dont think MMA is better than in depth study of one MA. "

This has been conclusively and repeatedly tested. No one believes this anymore. Even the absolute best in the world at one martial art train extensively in others to fill the holes in their game and strengthen their weak spots.

At an absolute minimum one must be highly proficient in all aspects of striking and all aspects of grappling. Most martial arts focus on one or the other , very few are complete in both striking and grappling with the exception of mma itself.

Any fighter who is only skilled in striking or grappling is doomed against someone proficient in both. For that reason studying only one traditional martial art will never be adequate from a competition, combat or self defence perspective.

Who is a better knight , the one who is skilled at riding , swordsmanship and the lance, or one who is trained in only one of these areas ?

A grappler who isn't trained in striking will get knocked out because he doesn't know how to defend himself properly from the full repertoire of strikes.

A striker who isn't trained in grappling is helpless against being taken down and submitted.

A boxer is not prepared for his opponent's kicks. A kickboxer is caught flat footed by a judo throw.

A wrestler isn't well versed in defending jujitsu submissions from the bottom.

An incomplete martial artist can never be equal to a complete one.

In depth study of a martial art can be a good starting point, but it is only that. The new breed trains MMA from the beginning and they are better martial artists for it in many cases. But starting with one martial art and then branching out later can be a valid choice.

Remaining limited to one  only for life is simply refusing to strengthen your weaknesses and an unwillingness to improve in all areas. A true martial artist would never be satisfied knowing only half of martial arts, not if he wanted to be able to win fights against those who know both sides of the science.

Unarmed combat is human chess. Trying to do it with a single martial art is like playing chess with only one type of chess piece.

You need all your pieces to respond to whatever move your opponent might make. If he sees you are playing without a knight or without a bishop he will immediately move to exploit that gap. The same is true when a fighter sees his opponent is missing one aspect of his fight game. He immediately exploits that gap and all the skills the opponent does have are neutralized and rendered useless on account of the one skill he lacked.

Many a master striker has spent an entire fight on his back without being able to throw a single punch because he lacked takedown defence and a ground game.

That would make sense if the different martial arts werent complete, even tkd includes ground technique and standing grapples.

"No one believes this anymore"

Says you, why do you have a dozen people arguing against your statements then?
And why do people still often specialize?

You're an MMA fundamentalist

You don't know it but you are proving my point. The ground game of TKD is laughably inadequate, as is the ground game of karate, kick boxing and kung fu, just as jujitsu, judo , sambo and wrestling lack striking.

To say any of these martial arts are even remotely complete is truly absurd.

You are arguing not just against me but against every single competitive mixed martial artist, every single professional fighter recognizes the need to train in multiple styles.

You are presuming to know better than people who literally put their lives on the line and make their living on unarmed combat. Why you would think you know better than them about this is mystifying.

Specializing is different than only knowing one martial art. A fighter knows multiple styles and then specializes in their particular strength.

Lyoto Machida specializes in karate. Khabib Ngurmedov specializes in sambo. Damian Maia specializes in jujitsu. Yoel Romero specializes in wrestling.

Yet all these fighters possess train in the full spectrum of martial arts and uses the whole spectrum of techniques as needed. If they did not or could not they would not be able to compete at the highest level .

Most fighters come from a specialized background and then do years of training in the other martial arts to prepare for the UFC because they recognize what should be obvious to anyone- that they can't hope to succeed with a single martial art.

TKD striking is also laughable, thats beside the point.

Your appeal to authority is denied. As far as risking ones life, Ive been confronted with weapons on a number of occasions over the years, excuse me if I dont take that comment seriously.

So to be clear you are saying you know more about martial arts than professional martial artists?

You have a special insight into martial arts that every UFC champion lacks ?

If what you were saying was true we would see people with only a single martial art performing and succeeding at the highest level. Instead we see everyone at the highest level training in the full spectrum of martial arts. Ergo what you are saying is wrong.

You are debating something that has already been tested and proven. It's obvious to me that you actually know what I am saying is true because it's so self evidently logical and so demonstrably true in reality for everyone to see, and that you are only continuing to dispute in a misguided attempt to save face by defending your initial incorrect statement long after it's been corrected. This is a sunk cost fallacy. Changing your mind to accommodate new or better information isn't a weakness, but defending something you know is untrue is.

If you are so determined to imagine that knowing one martial art is somehow equal to knowing many, or that limited martial arts are complete in themselves, I won't further dissuade you of your cherished and anachronistic illusions.

Just going to add again, there are many forms of kung fu, the term is ambiguous and generalizing them all into one just reflects a profound ignorance of that fact.

Unless it's fight for your life, i think it's ends up being stunt acting to some degree, since there are limitations put in place for sport

I remember this one time wrestling the ref had to break us up. We were both ready to start fighting.

We had some bad blood as I faced him multiple times. Calm down chill out.

You are definitely right moonshoe.  Anyone claiming otherwise is being obtuse or ignorant.

Many traditionalists who specialize in one, many life long masters, also display the same behaviour being displayed by some here.

The gracies were famous for "proving" their martial arts superior to any other style.  There are many old videos of them schooling kung fu, hapkido, karate, etc.  These are people who would even cheat and try to land a cheap blow after tapping.  They were so frustrated....to learn a lifetime of dedication to their art was so ineffective. Lol

And now...the gracies can't or couldn't handle your typical top tier mma fighter.  Matt Hughes vs. Royce Gracie Anyone?

The martial arts have involved into the hybrid beast that is "mma".  It is Bruce Lee's vision.

Even if the rules were scrapped and joint manipulation was legal, eye gouging or whatever  (all stuff attempted before regard less of the rules), you would still find the same guys at the top.  They would just add more tools to their tool box.

How anyone can argue that mma today is not the most effective and complete martial arts system available, is laughable.

But martial arts is like religion to some people.  Until they get their ass kicked, they will always spout off lol.

I think studying the old traditional martial arts has advantages on the road to becoming a complete fighter.  And one aspect in regards to that especially is the philosophical and mental aspect.  These ancient martial arts have some really great things to teach.

Ya I'm really dissapointed over them taking wrestling out of the olympics.

I spent so much time getting good at it. There isn't anywhere to go I should have spent more time playing football. As I can get paid 100 million.

I chose the wrong sport but I loved it.
