I think it's more of a fent epidemic more then anything. Also the restrictions on prescription opiates often drive people to heroin.

Restrictions, or over prescription? Because we prescribe them more than anyone in the world in the US, and have one of the highest rates of opiate usage in the world illegal and legal. In the United States, it's surprisingly easy to get prescribed opiates for even minor pains. There are some backwards ass restrictions in place as well that often hurt people who might actually need them, but I'd think the biggest driver is the exposure people are presented with to them in the medical realm.

I got prescribed 50 percs just for a tooth removal. It was silly.

It's sadly a combination of both.

The kinds of doctors that have the sense of responsibility to not give people opiates who don't need it also feel they are responsible for making sure no one gets them just because they say they need them, thanks to all the regulations and guidelines trying to blanket over a very individual case by case situation.

And the irresponsible doctors that prescribe no matter what are going to prescribe no matter what.

I think their guidelines and regulations hurt more than help because doctors should be trained and capable enough to understand when someone needs an opiate and when not. And they should be paid in a way that rewards them for making good decisions but... Lol why would we do that? why not pay them regardless of what they do and protect them from malpractice suits.

I live in a suburb in California and after my wisdom teeth were removed they gave me Tylenol 3 I would've loved percs. I just had major shoulder surgery and they gave me 60 10mg Norcos which didn't do shit. Also if I continue to have legit pain (which I am and have been for years before the surgery)I legally am not able to get any opiates because I have anxiety disorder and I'm prescribed benzos.

Even if I took them 12 hours apart they legally cannot prescribe me any because of liability not just to deter .  Maybe It's surprisingly easy in your area but you cannot speak for all 50 states or even 25 states. Hell my mother has had 9 major surgeries,A tailbone injury, lots of back pain, arthritis and they just cut her diluadid script of over a decade she had by 40 pills. It hurts her badly every month . She NEEDS those pills but that's the "response" to the opiate epidemic. She hates getting high but also hates agonizing pain.

Just saying Don't speak about opiate availability across the U.S. Unless you've been through it personally state by state.

You say  "There are some backwards ass restrictions in place as well that often hurt people who might actually need them, but I'd think the biggest driver is the exposure people are presented with to them in the medical realm. "

Pill pushing irresponsibly and over the top was a real and rampant thing in the early 2,000s over prescribing ruined my health by age 18 and you're right in some states still there's gross over prescriptions of opiates but that has plummeted significantly because of Doctor shopping in the east and south. However in Cali it is EXTREMELY hard to get rxd opiates unless it's methadone/subtext etc and I think that's trading one opiate for another.

Oh when I had my wisdom teeth pulled they gave me 30 percs. I took ibuprofen instead and snorted all of them with my gf instead.

I wonder if anyone has considered dentists in the opiate crackdowns...

The girl who I first tried percosets with was 15 and they were supposedly prescribed for insomnia. It was her own legit script with her name on the bottle.

I don't buy the 'insomnia' thing, but the fact is, is that hard opioids were being prescribed to teenage girls for no apparent reason.

There is a really good doc on cable about opioids, might be HBO I'm not sure. Yep, found it.

That documentary was so sad

I preferred Fentanyl: Deadlier Than Heroin. It wasn't just about people dying, it was more a glimpse into the current opioid scene in Alberta.
