Detachment from Externality
    #24346847 -

If you live in a Westernized society, then this applies to you. I have the notion that we all cling to recreational drugs, the internet, masturbation and etc because we all want to delay thinking of the inevitable which is death. We use all these things to distract us from the stress of mortality. So as a result of this fear, we become addicted to everything around us, and without it we do not feel complete. Withdrawal happens. Cigarettes are a prime example, but it applies to everything. What you first felt could walk away from is now a need. A compulsive adaption to your unhealthy mind. As humans we are progressive beings, constantly changing and evolving, (thats why bellbottoms arent a thing anymore) and when the collective masses finds things like social media or buying the latest iphone acceptable, then no one questions it. MOST OF US ARE BLIND. yes, all caps for emphasis.

I disagree that addiction is in any way related to death anxiety. I think it's a coping mechanism for living in a world which is inherently unnatural to us.

That's how it works for me at least. I've had spells of addiction with most things in my time, yet I faced my DA long ago. I'm more than at peace with my impending demise, yet I have never been able to find peace in the artificial world which humans have constructed - only in nature can I find it.

It's something I'm still working on..

--------------------
Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

This is an extremely complex subject, but I think Jsb hits the nail on the head for the most part. Part of it could be that we are so disconnected from a healthy relationship with Nature that it has fractured us and led to these vague feelings of loneliness and anomie that plague modern society. When you replace a life as fulfilling as one that is in a very intimate relationship with a healthy ecosystem with i-phones, McDonald's and Nike, something is bound to go wrong spiritually. I think Jsb is right about addiction, and that the problem is not really with DA, which is legitimate, but rather with plain old pathology. There are other ideas out there, like the notion that the narrower birth spacing among civilized women has led to a huge skewing of the ego in civilized societies, in that there is not sufficient time between babies for the child to fully develop a healthy spiritual and egoic outlook. For more on this idea, feel free to check out chapter 9 of my book in the second link in my sig. It is conspicuous that, for those who study anthropology, the mental health of aboriginal peoples is always so strong and pristine as compared with that of modern industrial and post-industrial societies. Take that for what it is worth.

TIL!

im gonna check it out, that sounds interesting.

lemme play devils advocate here OP....so what happens when all of us get "detached from externality"?

to me, that seems like a very boring place.  its true, we may attach ourselves to culture in addictive ways, but thats not cultures fault. culture is beautiful.  its what makes us human.  its what makes life worth more than "survival of the fittest"

I think its too late to abandon modern culture and go back to nature.  would it be nice to do that?  of course, and may even be better.  but that doesn't seem to me to be the situation the world presents us with at this time.  we aren't just addicted to technology, we are addicted to the advanced medical fields and advanced agriculture that heal and feed our population.  if we can't even get people to get off of Facebook, how can we expect people to get off modern medical technology?

its a nice sentiment, but its idealistic IMO.  a better approach might be to make a decision to start modeling culture after nature.  fields like bio-technology already do this.  renewable energy is doing this.  a shift towards the natural in dietary perspective is happening.  unfortunately, these fall under the guises of cliche's and "saving money", and "this is trendy", etc.  when the REAL narrative needs to be something more personal, more along the lines of a "return to nature" but in a more modern sense

I think we "get it" to some extent (maybe thats a little too optimistic), we just don't really "hear it" in terms of the cultural narrative we see in the media now, and FOR SURE we dont seem to be "getting it" fast enough

What does DA refer to here ?

--------------------
Enlils true purpose is to get us off topic and to cast enough logical doubts so that outsiders viewing this would be more likely to side with his fake opinions rather than our or sometimes controlled opppsotions opinions.

You see if you are too skilled at not falling for their traps and stating logically sound debunks then other accounts who purposefully agree with 90% of the truth join in and get the entire topic off the main points.

It's their 1960s version of damage control and diversion but man it's painfully obvious in 2017

Distractions from the truth.

Death anxiety is a natural condition of having not discovered truth.

The distractions are a product of the ego mind which keeps itself separated in solitary at distance from the universal truth which poses threat to its entire individual being.

The truth is ultimate unity.

nah, id say im totally ok with "death" although i would like to experience some things on this planet before i go.

i totally agree with the idea of us being out of harmony with nature, the earth is a living being, look how we mistreat it.

we are part of her so it would only make since that our mind state reflects her present state.

And you, paradoxically, as an individual have discovered the truth?

I don't think there is anything wrong with technology, our life now is way easier than those who lived before us.

The thing is we should rely more on resources that doesn't make damage to our planet, but that would be a disaster to few selfish REAL powerful people and to big companies and corporates.

To accept and comprehend that very paradox is a significant part of the knosis as the fundamental contrast between the samsara condition and the cojoined spirit.

Urrr, maybe you do, but you can't speak for me or anyone else.

I strongly suspect that we are all connected as part of a higher consciousness, but it could just as well be my mind playing tricks on me.

I freely translate my own perception of the populous in the same way you have liberty to do so.

The quality of our philosophy is directly proportionate to the confidence we have in it.

But I don't have liberty to do so?

I can only speak my own truth, and even that is often liable to be incorrect. How could I possibly speak it for another?

As stated, yes you do.

When we have a philosophy which pertains to the population, we, by default encompass everyone.
