Compassion
    #24259870 -

For me, compassion is to recognize the existence and selfhood of another, and to act accordingly. Perhaps it is the highest good of which a human is capable. We all know that morality in human terms is relative from society to society (which is not to endorse moral relativism). But perhaps compassion as described could be the basis of some form of universal morality which might transcend relativity.

What does compassion mean to you? And do you feel it is important? It seems we could use a little more of it on this plane of existence.

I think there's social constructivism as well as individual constructivism that makes society and the individual run.

Recently I've been more open to trying and respecting diversity and I think that's as close as it can mean for me in regards to the plethora of my own experiences.

Again though I think there is a disconnect between the extremes of militant atheists and the extremes of creationists. Eastern and Western esoteric and scientific philosophies don't seem compatible but if this is philosophy then there should be a way to make both Western and Eastern philosophies compatible. :imo:

Essentially I think compassion is related to hope, faith, love, hate, happiness, joy and suffering.

Intuit what would be suitable for the person who is in pain and help them connect to the right place/person/action/idea/medicine.

The wisest compassion would be help that is given with the most meaningful perspective to the person.

Not all compassion can be so wise, but we can try.

I do view compassion as the universal basis for morality. Like the agapé of the New Testament, which is the basis of Christian metaphysics (i.e., "God is love," 1 John 4:8), the Buddhist Clear Light is also compassion, karuna. For me the clincher was an Experience I have written of elsewhere, Clear Light of Unmitigated Reality and "Unbearable Compassion," inseparable. This identification of the Logos as love, or as the Clear Light as being karuna, or metta (loving-kindness) in Buddhism is also referred to at the beginning of every sura in the Qur'an which refers to Allah as "the compassionate, the merciful." This truth is to be found in virtually every world religion with the central message of Compassion-Love being either central or slightly off-center, giving precedence to other metaphysical values such as Unity or Lawfulness. The exact focus of these metaphysical verities determines very different religious cultures even though none of them live up to their ideals. Christians do not practice agapé (especially in the politicized Christian Right), Muslims do not embody the unity of Allah, and Jews can only imperfectly the 613 commandments of the Law of Moses. Compassion itself transcends doctrines, dogmas, and cultural relativity and utilitarian philosophy.

compassion is for me feeling the others feeling

This may manifest as: someone is very sad, and you feel their sadness and cry.it is a connective deep feeling. But it can also happen any moods are felt.

In even deeper states of feeling (often inspired with psychedelics) you can ever feel you become that person(s), whoever it is...may even be a tree, a community of animals, and so on

Physical feelings can include your guts and a feeling your heart is opening

I watched this dance competition the other day called Young Dancer, on the BBC. And this young guy did this dance and it was so moving, the passion, intensity, meaning (the judges obviously were fkin brain dead because he didn't win it!). I felt it so much it made me cry and I felt my heart affected--like a feeling of movement over my heart. It was a wonderful experience. both joy and pain.

I think that is empathy.

when I think of compassion, I think of it as an activity of sorts, not something passive.

but I also tend to read into word meanings more than I should...articulation is a lifelong goal of mine.

I would be interested in exploring the idea of compassion (as an activity) to " be the basis of some form of universal morality which might transcend relativity." but I think we should tread lightly.

"universal" and "morality" are heavy words, especially when you put them together.

can't you "compassionately" kill something?  is the process of birth "compassionate"?

For me, compassion arises from the knowledge of how much we all suffer in this life. If I know another is suffering, why would I act in any way that would/could increase their suffering?

Yet, if I can somehow ease it due to my actions? To me, that is acting with compassion. It need not be anything more than to give, or to inspire a smile IMO.

--------------------
Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

Does it really always have to do with suffering, though? Couldn't sharing in the joy of another be a compassionate act? Couldn't relating to someone on an existential level, merely to acknowledge that experience of the other, be a compassionate act? Must we always involve suffering in the definition of this concept?

I entertain Chogyam Trungpa's take on compassion..

"Compassion has nothing to do with achievement at all.  It is spacious and very generous.  When a person develops real compassion, he is uncertain whether he is being generous to others or to himself because compassion is environmental generosity, without direction, without 'for me' and without 'for them.'  It is filled with joy, spontaneously existing joy."

Compassion is natural..

Its when we get to believe..that the very basic functions of life dont exist...or are part of some insane attainment..

because we are here as beings..we have a chance to live a lasting and full life..

and to believe that both you and another person deserve this..means you are definitely compassionate..

And to further or otherwise Fruitfur...the fiscal policy is about an agenda..and categorical imperatives take care of everything..

From simple things like squaring a circle..and turning a circle around more times than 3.14 pi for example..is an honest cheerleading number..you could dance and sing about it for eternity..making bigger and smaller circles as you go..and opening doorways via the phi(fire-putrefaction) ratio..

Which is 1:2 anyways...always marking a half is possible if your willing to wrap your head around it..but the subconscious exists in a meta extreme state...means its always going over borders...from beginning to end..!

So we see that the best compassion..is not only maximal..but minimal..and full and empty at the same time..

Any possible way to get more compassion..is good for the category of compassion..and that its meaning makes it good for you too..

Always giving is Good..or seen to be Good..and holding can seem to be evil..or are we just over concerned.. Slack is an essential nutrient..or unit in time...and as its measured is your observation an honest and almost completely kiy, endeavour..which is like yin existing permanently..and the Yang being branching in and out of the behaviours of time, ki, and Kiya..

All things key..in a bunch or a small rose..that cant grow any larger...why is it that life finds specific pockets to occupy..and to fulfil their very beautiful role in nature..outside is always good to breath Fresh air..unless your in a space shuttle...than you will probably get vacuumed to Da'ath(death)!

concerned at he beginning is normal for a stage of initiation..and then governing comings..about the comeuppance..of the day...is a long lost legion

one who works from Roam..can travel home whenever they want..and those are stone masons..or otherwise Rosicrucians..Illuminati... etc..

Thank you for your Time...

Quote:
In other words compassion is born from empathy. I agree that it's important and I believe it's something that most people are capable of.

I'm about to be 29 this year. Still young but old enough to have had quite a few important life experiences that have shaped me greatly.

When I was young I was not capable of the same level of compassion as I am now because I wasn't able to empathize as much. And I wasn't able to empathize because of a lack of life experience, I was not schooled in worldly lessons that one develops through adulthood. I find myself teary eyed over things I wouldn't think twice about in the past.

Some people have a good structure growing up and they grow into morale, compassionate, good people. Others don't and they may develop an appreciation for compassion as they age and experience some of the pitfalls in life.

Very few people are bad, I think many are ignorant. If they could understand things on a deeper level then maybe they'd be more empathetic and compassionate. It could be a matter of distraction as well..

Ever notice how you hear about the young gang members being the most violent and cutthroat? They have something to prove and they don't understand the full impact of their actions. A young person full of hate is a dangerous thing

Good point. I agree.

Compassion helps to connect me with the people I dislike or even hate and people who have hurt me.
