"How could the world let the Rwanda genocide happen?"
    #24181054 -

So asks a TV talking head. I did not know it was my problem to prevent slaughter in another country some 9,000 miles away. Seems it would be the responsibility of the warring tribes to control their bloodlust. UN was there in small part, but to control 1,000,000 or more angry people would take full on military action; IOW killing to prevent killing. Not sure how that works.

Now something similar is happening in the Sudan in Darfur. Still not my purview. Perhaps BLM should intervene; maybe create a 'safe space'. Dunno.

The talking head was trying to guilt her audience into doing something TODAY. She failed to tell us all what she would do.

This is a real problem that governments face, when they act people blame them for acting, when they don't act, people blame them for not acting. If the UN actually had some teeth it could do something about it without the implicit threat of imperialism, at least of one nation over another. Like all of the big problems today, they are global problems for which we only have national solutions, hence the reoccurrence.

How many African nations rushed to aid the States during the American Civil War? None. Not their problem.

How far does one's responsibility lie? For me it lies in the people I encounter daily and not much further. I am not a Savior - and I don't think anyone else is either.

We all inhabit the same globe.
What distance from you personally does it take for you to absolve yourself of responsibility.

Rather than asking some abstract question, why don't you tell us how you personally are stopping the genocide.

Are YOU willing to get between warring factions? Will either side appreciate and acknowledge your sacrifice?

I thought it straight foward question based on you deciding distance distinguishes your care or effort.

I have full knowledge that the decisions made on this side of the globe affect the other.

We are all complicit, what actions you choose to take are generally based upon your understanding or not of this.

Already stated I am not the world's Savior. How many ways to you want me to put it? And "NO!" I am not in any way complicit in tribal hatred going back millennia.

Now please put your body between the warring factions to demonstrate your moral superiority and I will gladly place a wreath on your grave and acknowledge your useless sacrifice.

Or are some noble words on an obscure forum the best you have?

Were there any african nations at that time that were able to interject in the american civil war? Were there even any african nations at that point in history? Anyway, I concede your point. I think the obsession with american peacekeeping comes from post WW2 geopolitical strategies for avoiding another world war. But now america gets blamed for everything that goes wrong in the world, kinda like how the government gets blamed for everything that goes wrong in a nation.

also we forget our own history of giving the American Indians blankets with smallpox virus on them. And that is just the most obvious tip of the ice berg...
for the lowdown
on American Imperialism check out some of
chalmers johnson
talks / interviews on you tube

who is he you wonder?
from wiki:

"Chalmers Ashby Johnson (August 6, 1931 – November 20, 2010)[1] was an American author and professor emeritus of the University of California, San Diego. He served in the Korean War, was a consultant for the CIA from 1967 to 1973, and chaired the Center for Chinese ....He wrote numerous books including, most recently, three examinations of the consequences of American Empire: Blowback, The Sorrows of Empire, and Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic....
"A nation can be one or the other, a democracy or an imperialist, but it can’t be both. If it sticks to imperialism, it will, like the old Roman Republic, on which so much of our system was modeled, lose its democracy to a domestic dictatorship."....
Johnson is, perhaps, best known today as a sharp critic of American imperialism. His book Blowback (2000) won a prize in 2001 from the Before Columbus Foundation, and was re-issued in an updated version in 2004. Sorrows of Empire, published in 2004, updated the evidence and argument from Blowback for the post-9/11 environment, and Nemesis concludes the trilogy...."In Blowback, I set out to explain why we are hated around the world. The concept "blowback" does not just mean retaliation for things our government has done to and in foreign countries. It refers to retaliation for the numerous illegal operations we have carried out abroad that were kept totally secret from the American public. This means that when the retaliation comes – as it did so spectacularly on September 11, 2001 – the American public is unable to put the events in context. So they tend to support acts intended to lash out against the perpetrators, thereby most commonly preparing the ground for yet another cycle of blowback. In the first book in this trilogy, I tried to provide some of the historical background for understanding the dilemmas we as a nation confront today, although I focused more on Asia – the area of my academic training – than on the Middle East."

Yeah, the U.S. has been a scandalous little bitch in the past -- at many times, in many places -- and as the wiki summary points out, it's usually hidden from most of the American people, who tend to be shocked that anyone could not love us. I have to recommend Morris Berman's trilogy on American culture, especially the second book, Dark Ages America. Illuminating reading.

Without question, the U.S. is an imperial power.
