THOSE BUSH COMMERCIALS

George Bush has been president of the United States for three and one-half years. During that time, what is the single most important event that happened, not just here, but anywhere in the world? Let's state it more strongly. What one event defines the first Bush term.

Now, we may have some egocentric whiners out there who believe that the IT jobs they lost to some call center in India is that defining moment. Right ... it's all about them. The correct answer, though, is the Islamic terrorist attack on New York and Washington DC.

George Bush is the 43rd President of the Untied States. Think back. Harder if you're a Democrat, I know ... but try to think back through your life experience and the history that you managed to learn in our government schools and tell me just how many presidents out of those 43 have had a defining moment like that which occurred on 9/11. I'm not the biggest dummy out there in terms of our history, and I can only think of one other similar defining moment in the last 100 years, and that would be December 7, 1941; the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Both Pearl Harbor and 9/11 demanded an immediate and decisive response from the president, and both Franklin Roosevelt and George Bush showed that they were up to the task.

Now Bush runs an advertisement that features fleeting images of 9/11. A shot of an American Flag flying outside at the scene of the destruction in New York, and of some firefighters. As soon as these ads hit the television screens various Democrats and Kerry supporters across the country reacted with immediate outrage.

For today's study in political absurdity we will take a look at a letter that Frank Lautenberg, The Democrat Senator from New Jersey, sent to Bush:

Dear Mr. President:
As you may know, over 700 of my constituents died in the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001. .... Using images [from] the horrific and tragic event for political ends demeans and dishonors those who died and the families who lost loved ones on that day. ... I urge you to direct your campaign to immediately withdraw these advertisements."

The president of the International Association of Fire Fighters also chimed in. Harold Schaitberger said that "I'm disappointed but not surprised that the President would try to trade on the heroism of those fire fighters in the September 11 attacks." Most of the newspapers and broadcast newscasts who carried Schaitberger's remarks failed to also state that Shaitberger endorsed John Kerry several months ago and is a constant fixture on the Kerry campaign trail, usually standing behind Kerry with a huge smile on his face.

If you live in a primary state undoubtedly you've seen those television ads featuring John Kerry carrying his M-16 through the Vietnamese jungles. As you know over 50,000 people died in Vietnam. So, where is the outrage over John Kerry exploiting a tragedy that cost 50,000 American lives for his political campaign? Oh! You say that Kerry actually served in Vietnam, and that's different. Well Bush serve in the war on terror ... as Commander in Chief in fact ... and highlighting that service as part of a reelection campaign is entirely appropriate.

When do you think Frank Lautenberg is going to send a letter to John Kerry saying "As you know, over 3,500 of my constituents died in Vietnam. Using images from that horrific war for political ends demeans and dishonors those who died and the families who lost loved ones that day." Yeah ... hold your breath waiting for that one.

Isn't this just about as stupid as things get in a political campaign? The Democrats are trying to write a rather remarkable set of rules for this election season. They are doing so with the complete and almost unanimous support of the media. Thus far we have:

1. Inasmuch as John Kerry served in Vietnam, any negative reference to John Kerry's voting record during his 19 years in the Senate of the United States shall be deemed to be an attack on Kerry's patriotism.

2. Any images of Vietnam used in Kerry campaign commercials are not only appropriate, but serve as proof positive of John Kerry's fitness to serve the country as its president.

3. Any images of 9/11 used in Bush campaign commercials are not only inappropriate and exploitive, but shall also serve as proof positive that George Bush is unfit to serve the country as its president.

4. Any group of people who support the reelection of George Bush shall be deemed a "special interest." Any group of people who support the campaign of John Kerry shall be deemed a "constituency."

We will anxiously await the next entry into the media campaign stylebook .. and will certainly report same to you.

I thought the article implied that each and every family member of a 9-11 victim had been polled and that they all believe that the adds were disrespectful.

it clearly DOES NOT state:

Bush's campaign ads piss off ALL families of 9/11 victims.

I highly reccommend finding a constructive means
of releasing all that pent up anger and bitterness.

I think that, based on his campaign so far, John Kerry is eminently qualified to serve as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy and has my full endorsement as such. I would recommend him for this job to anyone who has a use for him as such. He is very skilled at making quick judgements and acting upon them, even to the point of risking his own personal safety.

On the other hand, given more than three seconds to consider a course of action he seems to find no end of alternatives and thus becomes utterly paralyzed (subliminal message******** Jimmy Carter********) . "Nuanced" indeed. Either that or he is utterly craven and beholden only to the grail of power, without regard for what he could do with it (subliminal message********* Bill Clinton*********).

from the first response this thread got a little hostile.
That's too bad.
If many of the families of victims or firefighters don't want their image or the image of the event that killed their loved ones on TV endorsing a politician, G-dub should remove it.
The move to get people off the Democratic nominee race back focused on the president was a strong, blatant, tasteless one.

He can do whatever he wants, often times negative ad campaigns make the candidate running it look worse than who they're attacking. This ad makes George Bush look bad.
Unfortunately, in some sense, any press is good press, and the other 33 states that didn't see the ad on TV will see it now thanks to all the commotion.
I haven't seen any footage of Kerry in Vietnam, but that cannot be comparable. And this:
"Oh! You say that Kerry actually served in Vietnam, and that's different. Well Bush serve in the war on terror ... as Commander in Chief in fact ... "
is BS. How is showing footage of 9/11 destruction showing Bush acting as Commander in Cheif in the War on Terror? To me it's showing how he failed as Commander in Cheif in the War on Terror, failing to fight for and protect our country when danger was approaching. I could see how footage of Saddam's statue being torn down would fit much better, but even disregarding the exploitation of dying innocent people unrelated to the Republican Party and G-Dub's presidency, using footage of 9/11 to promote Bush as a good president is just bad, wrong, stupid, counteractive.
And to say that any president during these events would have done the same is invalid, because you do not know.
If they did, then people still would've been pissed off.
It just happens that people are pissed off at Bush.

And next time, luvdemshrooms, please focus your retort on the article, not the post/poster/thread. Thanks. The article is well written, exemplifying who's pissed at what, and why. hmm, exactly what the title says....

Why does the fact that any other president would've done it make it acceptable? You know, if Iraq had had a Kurd president, he probably would've gassed Saddam's people, but does that excuse Saddam's actions?

Right, ok, yeah I read that already.


Even if you think that any president would have done the same, it still makes it wrong. Even if Gore was elected in 2000, and 9/11 happened, and he made a campaign ad the same as Bush's, people still would be pissed off. The point isn't that it's Bush who did it, it's about the ad he created for his campaign. You're not stupid, you obviously know that, so why keep throwing in the same irrelevant statement?

I understand your point, but I just think it's more about the ad, than Bush.
I think Republicans and co. would be pissed if Gore as a democratic President used the same ad. I think some families and firefighters would still be mad.

The groups that are crying foul have been shown to have been funded by Heinz-Kerry camp. Of the several articles I've read about this, the same 3 to 4 people are being quoted over and over.

What about the victims families that support them?

NEW YORK - More than a dozen families who lost relatives in the Sept. 11 attacks released a letter yesterday declaring their support for President Bush and his use of images of the destroyed World Trade Center in campaign ads.
"There is no better testament to the leadership of President Bush than Sept. 11," the letter states. "In choosing our next leader we must not forget that day if we are to have a meaningful conversation."

The "Open Letter to America," signed by 22 people who lost loved ones in the trade center, comes as other victims' families asked that the ads be pulled from the airwaves. The spots also show firefighters carrying a flag-draped stretcher.

"In the November election we will have a clear choice laid before the American people," the letter reads. "President Bush is rightly offering us that choice and the images of Sept. 11, although painful, are fundamental to that choice. The images in President Bush's campaign television ads are respectful of the memories of Sept. 11."

When asked about the ads yesterday, President Bush said he will "continue to speak about the effects of 9/11 on our country and my presidency."

"How this administration handled that day, as well as the war on terror, is worthy of discussion. And I look forward to discussing that with the American people," he said.

Jimmy Boyle, former president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, said he came up with the "Open Letter to America" after hearing that Bush was being criticized for the ads.

"I don't think he's taking advantage of Sept. 11, and I feel that he's given us the leadership that we need," said Boyle, who said he will be voting for a Republican president for the first time in November.

A group representing 120 families of Sept. 11 victims urged Bush's campaign to pull the ads, which began Thursday. "I am outraged at the Republicans for doing this, and I don't like my son being used as a political pawn," Robert McIlvane said yesterday. His 26-year-old son, Bob, a Merrill Lynch & Co. vice president, died in the attacks that killed almost 3,000 people.

not only is that article innaccurate in its description of the ads, it completely misses the point. OF COURSE Bush can talk about 9/11 and the war on terror. he can make it an issue in this campaign if he wants. what the families are protesting is the tasteless use of an image of a body being pulled out of the rubble. how can anyone think that that's approriate for a political ad? how would you feel if it was YOUR loved one in that casket being used in an ad in that way? those people have every right to be upset. and btw, sen. John McCain has also criticized the use of those particular images. it's completely indefensible.
