I don't remember my Jstor password or I would cite a source, but it is well known fact in groups of people that need to know.  I am sure if that guy is actually interested in having an informed view he can use search google to some success.

What causes a seizure is an overload or malfunction of brain signals. Epileptic meds are to manipulate those brain functions so that they are more regular. For someone that already has a relatively normally functioning brain and even to people who have seizures it can cause this "overload" and malfunction.

It's very sensitive brain stuffs they're manipulating. The reason children are more likely to have seizures than adults is because their brains are still developing and thus their brain waves are evolving and changing. It sounds like common sense bad to be fucking with that.

My nephew is a great kid. Really funny, really sweet and very adventerous.

However, he's always been super hyper and had a hard time concentrating on one thing. He was diagnosed autistic. He takes ritalin now.. honestly, not sure if I've seen a real change. But I'm not his parents and only see him once a week.

I do know from experience that it can be BAD. Had a friend in elementary school who was diagnosed with ADD and he was given ritalin. Complete change in personality. He went from funny and hyper to a zoned out zombie. I considered myself ADD but I think I was just eccentric and had lots of energy. I think Ritalin would have been bad for me.

Good thoughts in this thread.

Some basically have no choice and must take sedatives or other antiseizure meds to control epilepsy.  Some react to less powerful meds and thats good.  But others can't live without it..to them its a god send but it still can be limiting and does cause physical dependence and will aggrevate seizres more if one gets their med supply cut off. 

I think Asante wasn't addressing the proper uses for those meds like I stated above...but more so the fact that some of them they have been prescribed and are being rx'd to the young and adult like to control behavior - autism, Asperger, torrets, Ocd, add, adhd, odd, bi-polar, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, addiction, panic attacks etc etc.

Even they will have a lower seizure threshold and the risk of seizure once dependence is developed - which is just a matter of time when taking those classes of drugs daily - when tapering or stopping the med after they recover from (if they recover at all that is..) whatever was causing the problem the med was prescribed for in the first place, atleast for some time after - not to mention a whole other slew of symptoms and ailments that arise after detoxing from those meds, which can be just as bad if not worse than the reason the very med was prescribed.

  Really it takes a competent informed patient and a competent informed and compassionate physician to weigh out the benefits vs the risks with discernment to even experiment and see if meds are right for someone - and sadly that is the exception in actual practice , not the rule.

I agree with your last paragraph tho. I don't trust doctors and I don't trust parents. Both tend to panic and go OH NO THEY CAN ONLY HAVE A NORMAL LIFE WITH DRUGS... There's lots of therapeutic options and new ones being developed all the time, especially for autism. Alot of people think tho "well we tried therapy." and don't realize or forget that there's a ton of different kinds of therapy.

My big brother was on Ned's his whole childhood, he's 28 now and  quite fucked up in the head not even bashing, he doesn't know right from wrong and yeah it just fucked him ip ahah

Once someone has deemed a trait to be "abnormal" and needs changing, with drugs.

My old grade cards have comments from teachers that I'd... "daydream a lot and look out the window".

Today I'd be called ADD, and given drugs. Even though I graduated college and have had a successful career.

I would be more concerned if you did not daydream while looking out the window a good bit.
If you were sitting like an astute adept of knowledge in the school classroom all the time at such a young age I would figure you were on some kind of drug...my guess would be amphetamines.
