"Online Persona"?

I've heard several people mention their 'online persona' and how it's very different from their RL persona. I dunno about those people, but my online persona is pretty much the same as my RL one, except for being a bit more outspoken online. How about y'all? Thoughts..?

i too try to keep it real. its a different medium for communication though....you'll interact slightly differently because of it, and surely be interpretted differently.

That's true. Online forums lack the oh-so-important 'body english' which actually comprises most of interpersonal communications. I've heard some experts estimate that up to 70% of communication is visual!

but ya know, i find that i really enjoy this form of communication. i'm comfortable with words. i enjoy using them to my advantage. but even face to face, there is no guarantee that you're conveying your message the way you wish to...

I was suprised during the Superpimp lying debacle that so many people talked about how they "always lie online" or something to that effect. I think my "online persona" is pretty close to my real life persona. Although most people at The Shroomery probably think I look like a hippie, which isn't true.

I bet Learyfan runs around chucking random pictures from the 60's at work at the end of every conversation.

Yep, I find this method of communication enjoyable too, if not downright addicting!

When I talk over the internet, i have a lot more time to sit and develop my sentences than when I'm talking to a person in real time. Talking face to face, I sometimes find it difficult to express exactly whats on my mind, because usually you dont want to keep a person waiting while you search your english for the perfect adjective to describe whatever it is. Timing is very important in real life communication. If you keep a person waiting too long, they'll lose interest in whatever it is you're saying pretty quick.
Also, I love the use of the delete button. Don't like an idea you've written down? You realize that your choice of words may be too offensive? Simply delete it and construct a whole new sentence to suit your needs. Face to face talk has a variation of the delete button. Usuallly an "I mean", "actually", "on second thought", etc seem to do the trick.
I also seem to ramble on a lot more on the internet, as you can see...

Since i bothered to post i might as well answer your question. i think it's true that some (maybe most i don't know really) people have a completely different persona when there online. mine is pretty close but obviously i have some personal stuff i'd only share with a significant other (like gf/lover/friend w/ benefits ya know) but for the most part i'm pretty much the same, maybe a bit more unrestainred since obviously i can't go out in public announcing that i'm stoned off my ass. anyway hope that makes sense, peace

I'm pretty much the same in RL. Just a bit more blatant about the drug taking.

I'm the same, except I say more and talk more here. I'm a full-blooded thinker, I think waay more than when I talk so your impression of me would be differant but I dont change my persona online, but you people would probably get a differant impression of me.

I swear less on here and use single words while in RL my accent makes 3 words sound like 1 word.

True. I've read somewhere that said 70% of all communication is body language..
Interesting...
As for the online persona thingy...The only main difference is just the same as yours...I'm just more communicative (at least articulately) online.
