Harvesting and multiple flush Questions
    #2370304 - 02/22/04 11:38 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

Ive been doing this for a while and I have yet to see a secondary flushes with any mentionable results (cakes or casings).

I know that you are supposed to harvest right after they break veil and before they drop spores, but sometimes they dont all break at the same time. I usually wait for them all to break veil (so they all reach a good mature weight) but by then some of them have littered their spores all over my casing.

So my question is, what is the best way (and time) to harvest in order to get a good second (and third...) fllush? and do spores on the casing have any effect?

Im asking because Im working on a bulk pf/straw batch now that I would definatly like to see multiple flushes.

in my experience the spores have no adverse effect. pick them as they're ready, and start drying them. is there any reason for you not to pick them this way? i asked a similar question a while ago, because i thought i might be able to better judge the yeil of my second flush if i did a clean sweep of all my cakes at one time, when the first few were mature. i think the first was i mentioned is better.

So, lets say I have a casing with 80% of the mushrooms with broken veils, and the 20% remaining still growing, I should just pick off the ones that are ready and wait for the remaining 20% to finish?

And besides that, if i have a clean casing after the first flush. Is there something I should do to encourage the second flush? Besides raising the humidity?

i am not as familiar with casings, however i saw if you have 80% maturity, then pick that whole flush...the les mature ones will just be more potent :smile2:

as for the rest, i'm sure SOMEBODY can help you....:)

I have been told that germinating spores emit a gas or hormone that can stall fruiting.

pick each one before it matusres as needed
and you should rehydrate the casing layer inbetween flushes
the best solution is a bottom layer of moist verm
