Wait staff whom makes $2 an hour has the right and freedom to move to where they can make more, or find a higher-paying line of work altogether.

---

Right, because people who aren't making enough should simply just find another job that makes more. What a novel concept. That's what we should all do. Find jobs that make more.

I mean too slow if the place isn't busy.  If it is dead and it takes forever, fuck that, but if it is busy and rush hour, it is understandable.

Again, how is it the fault of the wait staff if your food is slow to come out?

It makes me laugh how much of a 'thing' tipping is in the US. I'm grateful here that we have the freedom to tip only when we feel it is truly deserved, without being made to feel like a cunt if you feel it is not.

You don't have to eat out. You can order take-out if you don't want to tip.

If you know you're not going to tip beforehand, you should at least tell the wait staff at the beginning, so that you can offer to get your own drinks and get your own food and utensils. If people did that, I would think that's more than fair to not offer up a tip.

I should offer to do their job huh, LOL.

If you're not planning on paying, why do you expect them to wait on you? After taxes, the $2 they make per hour they gets taken out by taxes so they end up with a check of $0. This means their pay rests solely on you. They could be serving other customers and providing better service to other tables who will tip in the meantime.

Some people legitimately enjoy the work or choose to work that because it fits with their class schedule. Still doesn't mean you can stiff somebody for no reason without getting called out.

this right here reminds me of the scene in reservoir dogs where Mr. Pink is explaining why he doesn't tip

"Uh uh, I don’t tip. No, I don’t believe in it. … Don’t give me that, if she don’t make enough money she can quit. … I don’t tip because society says I have to. All right, I mean I’ll tip if someone really deserves a tipping, if they really put forth the effort, I’ll give them something extra, but I mean this tipping automatically, it’s for the birds. I mean as far as I’m concerned they’re just doing their job. … She was okay. She wasn’t anything special. … Look I ordered coffee all right? Now we’ve been here a long fuckin’ time, she’s only filled my cup three times. When I order coffee I want it filled six times. … The words “too fuckin’ busy” shouldn’t be in a waitress’ vocabulary. … Jesus Christ, these ladies aren’t starving to death. They make minimum wage. I used to work minimum wage and when I did I wasn’t lucky enough to have a job that society deemed tip worthy. … You know what this is? It’s the world’s smallest violin playing just for the waitresses. … So is working at McDonald’s but you don’t feel the need to tip them do you? Well why not? They’re serving you food. But no, society says don’t tip these guys over here, but tip these guys over here. That’s bullshit. … Fuck all that. … I mean I’m very sorry the government taxes their tips. That’s fucked up. That ain’t my fault. I mean it would appear that waitresses are one of the many groups the government fucks in the ass on a regular basis. I mean show a piece of paper that says the government shouldn’t do that, I’ll sign it, put it to a vote, I’ll vote for it, but what I won’t do is play ball. And this non-college bullshit I got two words for that: learn to fucking type, ’cause if you’re expecting me to help out with the rent you’re in for a big fucking surprise."

I never know if I am not going to tip beforehand, as my tips are exclusively service-based.  If I go to a place I have been before and had great service I certainly do plan to tip, but if I get shit service at a new place, fuck 'em.

Yeah, I'm referring to people who know they are walking into an establishment beforehand with the intention not to tip.

I've heard of customers like this, but have never encountered them myself. But I was wait-staffing in a city that apparently is ranked to be #1 in the nation's most generous tippers. Almost all tips I received were a minimum of 20%. It wasn't uncommon for me to get 30% tips. Very few times I got a bare minimum of 15%. I never got completely stiffed at all.

Well you aren't a complete moron, and you don't seem to be lazy. I'd guess you actually earned your tips.  Believe it or not, though, there are shit wait staff out there who don't deserve an automatic tip, because that undermines the system(my system at least), of tips being based on good service.
I've only not tipped at restaurants a couple of times because of shitty food and service, but I do usually tip.

I tip the gas station dude(here in Oregon it is illegal to pump your own fuel) because he always runs to my car when it is busy and hot out(or raining) because he knows I am going to tip because he makes an effort, and it works for both of us because I get fueled-up first and have less of a wait than others, and he profits.  That's how my system works.
