There's a Michelin star restaurant in Brooklyn that also has a no-tipping policy. You have to remember that these restaurants pay their staff a minimum of $15 an hour though, either that or they tack a "service charge" onto your order. So essentially it ends up coming out to the same thing for the customer.

Well actually now that I think about it, I did have a couple ghetto hood rats come in. I'm talking ghetto people that try to complain about everything so they can try to get something for free. A couple of times, they order drinks or food or something, they eat or drink the entire thing, and then try to return it for a refund.

I refuse to refund them their money, it's company policy to refuse if they have consumed the entire thing. If you eat even half of it, and then return it, I would gladly refund your money. But not for eating the whole thing.

Usually when people who I feel are scam-artists try to come in, I place an automatic gratuity on their tip. Not always, because surprisingly hood rats are sometimes very generous tippers. But for people who are being cheap and are trying to pull a fast one, I did. That might be why I have never gotten stiffed.

I've got to say though, tipping because of shitty food is again, not the wait-staff's fault.

If you didn't like your food, you could have returned it (before you finished the whole thing obviously) and gotten a refund or ordered something else.

The service was shitty too.  I didn't finish it, and I don't give second chances when dining out so I wasn't going to order something else from the same place after they'd already fucked up.

Well you aren't a complete moron, and you don't seem to be lazy. I'd guess you actually earned your tips.  Believe it or not, though, there are shit wait staff out there who don't deserve an automatic tip, because that undermines the system(my system at least), of tips being based on good service.
I've only not tipped at restaurants a couple of times because of shitty food and service, but I do usually tip.

I tip the gas station dude(here in Oregon it is illegal to pump your own fuel) because he always runs to my car when it is busy and hot out(or raining) because he knows I am going to tip because he makes an effort, and it works for both of us because I get fueled-up first and have less of a wait than others, and he profits.  That's how my system works.

I believe it, especially in more rural areas where people work at a slower pace. I haven't seen many lazy wait staff in coastal cities or metropolitan urban cities.

I've noticed though, when I've gone to more rural areas like Arizona or New Mexico, the customer service is a lot slower. People take all the time in the world, and they are more casual when they speak, like "Whaddya want?" That shit would never fly on the east coast.

Must depend on the area I guess. I work in a small rural suburb in IL (I believe it just broke 6k people recently) for a gourmet meat market and my boss would fucking filet me if I addressed a customer like that, much less 'took all the time in the world' to get their orders. Hell, I get reprimanded fairly often if I'm free and theres a customer who hasn't been helped yet (regardless of whether or not they're still staring at the cases trying to figure out wtf they want in the first place or if they had literally just walked up to the case) Since I started working at 13 I don't believe I've ever had a job where I didn't refer to any customers I had to deal with in any capacity as 'sir' or 'ma'am'

Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."

To make matters worse I just got done with ANOTHER cab ride.  This was through my insurance.

I am on house arrest so I have allotted times I can leave the house.  This guy gets here a half hour early.  I can't go outside.

I finally hit the 3 o clock mark and go out there......he says he has to go pick up another client.

We drive 10 minutes out of the way ( he could've gotten her instead of picking me up early ) and tells me we are going to have to drop her off FIRST then me and then when I am done go wait for her, tells me to call my doctor and tell them I will be LATE!!!!

I call the insurance company to calmly complain, I can't be late to this doctor I only see them once a month.

He actually hands the woman in the back seat my information while we were arguing about him being early, and asks her to read what it says, like a child arguing in front of his parents......so now this woman knows my medical info, address, where I am going.

She starts screaming at me about what a piece of shit white trash scum bag I am, with no job living off the government, and I'm a liberal piece of trash.  This lady continues to insult me for a half an hour while the cab driver gets lost looking for her appointment.

Finally his dispatch calls him and says to drop her off at a GAS STATION PARKING LOT!!!! He drops her off in the middle of no where, then drives me to my appointment a half an hour late, as they are locking the doors.

I missed my appointment and he just drove me home.

I just sat in that cab for 2 goddamn hours and didn't even get to see my doctor, and have to reschedule, and now explain this to my house arrest officer.

Holy shit I am having a bad day.

So I was talking about this to my insurance company.  They were saying not only with their policies is the driver only allowed to pick up one person at a time, but him handing her my paperwork with my address, phone number, doctors name, etc, was highly illegal and that I could file a lawsuit against the company for the way he behaved, and for picking her up, then giving her my info, then making me miss an appointment I only go to once a month.......which I really needed to go to.

Would you file a lawsuit over something like this?  I have the complaint noted, and while on the phone with the insurance company the woman in the backseat is screaming and swearing at me.  He ended up dropping her off at a gas station and just taking me back to my house.

I kept my composure the entire time somehow, but I was not a happy camper after all that.

Ya thats because of the cab ride from work, and paying someone 20 bucks to take me to work.  I had to pay 80 dollars to work LOL.

And the reason I didn't tip is because the cab driver didn't turn the mile ticker on and charged me a flat rate, which was more than it would have been if he turned the ticker on, so technically the gratuity was added into the fare in my eyes.  This was a cab company.

The second cab I took later in the day was a designated cab through my insurance company, that my insurance covers to get me to appointments, I don't get to choose who picks me up for those, they do, and you don't tip because the insurance company covers the bill and the miles plus a pick up fee.

I always tip even if it's shitty service, but not if the tip is included.

It's not enabling shitty service.

It's a motto my grandfather always called "The tipping pool"

It's a pool of tipping karma in which you pretty much kill the server with kindness.

You walk in there in rags and get treated poorly because of it, then leave 25% and it goes into the pool that all the servers swim in.

They realize "fuck I should've served them better, imagine how much better they would've tipped?"

And also, how do you know someone didn't just run them through the ringer?  "OH THE FOOD SUCKS!!! YOU SUCK!!! I'VE BEEN COMING HERE 20 YEARS AND THIS IS HOW YOU TREAT ME!!!! MY DRINK HAS BEEN EMPTY FOR OVER 5 MINUTES!!! GET ME YOUR MANAGER!!!!"  Then the manager comes and does the same thing and the server really didn't do a bad job, the person was just trying to get free shit and be a dick?

Servers aren't robots, they are people.  Unless they are acting like a piece of shit across the board, there's probably a reason for your bad service, and they aren't making shit if they don't get tips.  I always was taught to make people smile, and what better way to do so than when they are frowning?  It's just a few bucks.

Yeah, I would most certainly sue. Even considering the inconvenience of hiring a lawyer and going to court.

Both of those people should be in a cage, you might not be able to arrange that, but you can at least be compensated for the situation and hopefully the cab driver will at least lose his job.

Granted it would be worth discussing with a lawyer what your odds of coming out ahead are, its not worth going to court if the odds aren't in your favor of winning.

Seems like I have a solid case. And I was literally on my way to see a grief counselor that I only see once a month.  The whole time this woman is screaming about what a lowlife jobless piece of shit I am, when I am half asleep because I work midnights.  The cab driver dropped her off at a gas station, then just took me to my doctors office 30 minutes late so I could reschedule.  Now I have to wait another month to go back. I haven't been.....right......lately.....and that really didn't help.  Suing didn't even cross my mind until my insurance company mentioned it ( it was a third party cab ) and then my boss immediately said to file a lawsuit.

Like when I called the insurance company while in the car they were like "Wait, he picked someone else up to take you each to doctor appointments? he isn't allowed to do that, that is confidential, you tell him to drop you off immediately" I told him what they said, and he actually turns around and asks the person we picked up if they minded?!!?!?!? Like what the fuck dude.  When I got to my docs office to reschedule they were like "You actually kept your cool? Unbelievable. I would flipped out."

I'm still kinda processing it.

It's just money.  I wouldn't offer to baby sit their kids, or offer them a helping hand with the dishes, but I will still throw a few bucks at them in hopes they quit fucking off.  And also a lot of places don't do individual tips anymore, hence the pool, each server has to take their tips back and put it with the rest of them and it gets divided equally ( thats how much bitro works, and I know a lot of places work like that )

I mean I am very generous. I'll give you my last cigarette even if I don't like you.  I don't think it's being a sucker. I think it's being the better person and it feels good to know despite someones attitude you can look past that and help.  Some people are in a lot of pain inside, or they have a mental syndrome they can't really control, or you may have misread them.

Now like if my food is fucked up and the server starts arguing with me, and practically insulting me, then storms off and refuses to keep serving me ( this has happened ) I won't tip. One time my friend didn't finish her food and the server accused her off eating all of it and then we all shoved a little bit on the plate to get a free meal.  It was a goddamn 3.99 bacon and eggs platter and my friend just said I am not eating this it's gross.  Server flipped her script.  I did not tip.

The server has to be downright nasty for me not to tip. And you have to remember I am in the midwest. I have noticed in my travels, people are generally a bit bitchier overall here.  I aim to please even if they don't.

You could, but I don't know how much you would be compensated and whether that amount would even cover your attorney expenses. If I were you I'd get one of those attorneys that don't take a payment up front, but instead receive a percentage of whatever you win.

Seriously, I don't understand people who are bad tippers, especially if they are only eating by themselves. If your meal is $12, the difference between a 15% tip and a 30% tip is only like $1.50. It's literally a dollar or two dollars of a difference. That's change I would be giving to a homeless person for no work.

Vandango, next time you have your doctor's appointment, you should post a job listing on Craigslist in the help wanted section saying that you are looking for a driver.

In the ad, you should state exactly what particular day and time you need a ride, and the exact amount of money you are offering for the job. I used to do this when looking for rides and I got literally hundreds of emails and replies.

I recommend posting at least one week in advance, so that you can sort through all the emails, and read everybody's bio and age and car make and model, so that you can select exactly the person who you think would be right for you. You should save a couple people's numbers just in case one of them doesn't follow through.

If it takes 45 minutes to get there, you should offer maybe $30 one-way. If they can wait around while you're seeing your doctor and bring you back, they get another $30. They end up working for 3 hours and make $20 an hour, and one of those hours they're not even technically working. So it's not a bad gig for somebody who's young and looking for a couple extra bucks. $20-$25 an hour is more than fair wage.

I always paid $30 an hour, but that's only because they had to drive through LA traffic which is the worst. I'd pay them $60 to take me a 2-hour driving distance, and they'd get another $60 for driving me back. So they'd make $120 in basically half a day's work, and on top of that I'd usually tip them another $10 or $20 too.

I usually tip $2 at restaurants for my share, up to $5 sometimes.
Not asking for a smile or anything like that, just bottom line courtesy and mediocre service.

But if someone's being disrespectful, or fucking off, they get snubbed.
Don't care about their problems, I don't want their problems, they can go fuck themselves.
